General Discussion / Re: FL*RM Integration - Beta Testers
« on: December 13, 2016, 05:44:30 pm »

Note that you should not add this to anything with a transmitter, so attaching it to a FLARM unit will be an issue unless it is a guaranteed receive only unit.  I suspect FLARM also contains an RF front end so adding this onto one of those could damage it.  If you're going into an SDR dongle then that will be fine.

I suspect you will need a very smooth supply to give it chance of working properly too.

Hi Jeramy
Thank you for your advice, it's best avoided on a transmitter. I just wounded if it was any good for our applications. I may call them and have a chat, just to see what they say about there filters.

Hi team,
Has anyone had experience with improving FLARM reception? As FLARM only transmits at around 10mw longer range reception can be limited without a good antenna setup. If antenna setup is the best that can be achieved on an aircraft, would adding a filter and preamp improve reception? I came across such a device, see link,

Would this be a worthy test to try?

To get to the settings you need to get to the PAW configurations page the link below will guide you to the correct area

I hope this helps

Thanks for posting Richard
Are we sure the cable colors are equivalent to your lead ?

I think tx/rx are green and white on my lead, I could be wrong

Thx
Lee

Hi Lee
The wire colur is correct as long as Mike has got the correct RS232 lead and not an alternative. To be sure please check with the RS232 to USB suplyer for the wiring diagram.

OK... You need to connect from your USB To RS232 converter lead

GRD (Black).......  rj12 pin 1
TXD (Orange).....  rj12  Pin 2
RXD (Yellow).....   rj 12  Pin3

The wire colour is from the diagram link suplyed for the RS232 to USB the colours may be difrent from an alternative RS232 supplier please check with the supplier.

The Diagram can be found on page 7 from the link below

http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Documents/DataSheets/Cables/DS_USB_RS232_CABLES.pdf

The Pin order for the rj12 for LX FLARM are shown on the Redbox instructions page 10 See link below

http://lxnavigation.com/downloads/manuals/Flarm/Flarm-red-Box-SD-IGC-26-6-2013.pdf

Looking at the instructions on the FLARM Mini box it indicates the pins out are the same so it should work, they are on page 3 and states .....

• Pin 6 power input (8-16V), 4 and 1 GND (near to RF connector), 2 data in, 3 data out, 5 power for
external display

You do not need the power on pin 6. Do not bother with pin 4 & 5 ether.

Instructions here ....
http://www.cssleszno.eu/files/LXFlarmMiniBox.pdf

Hopefully you have now all the info needed. Just make sure you put the rj12 the correct way around when you crimp the plug onto your RS232 usb. (I did my first one the wrong way around) The wires are a little tricky to push into the rj12 plug too

If you are still un-sure we could make one up for you.

If no one replays befor I get home I will let you know the wire order.  have you got a copy if the FLARM redbox instruction, this tells you which pins to connect

I hope to help... OK I have just integrated My FLARM RedBox with My PAW.... (See Photo) The instillation you see in the Photo is all covered inside the aircraft panel behind a hinged door for access and updates. The IPad is fixed to the door (Photo to follow) All very neat and tidy.

Here is how I connected. You need a USB to RS232 converter See Link

It comes with open weirs on the end so you need to crimp a RJ11/RJ12 to the ends As Lee has mention above connect GRD/RX/TX You must get the 6pin RJ11/RJ12 as some have 4 pins and will not do your job.

You will also be able to complete your FLARM updates via your PC with the same cable.

General Discussion / Sky Demon and Radar on one screen
« on: December 04, 2016, 03:47:41 pm »
Hi All,
Now here is a challenge !!!  Wouldn't it be cool if we could have our favorite navigation app running alongside the radar in one split screen on our Tablet device  :o I have looked already for this sort of app on Apple but there are only split screen browsers and not for running apps.  Any Ideas???

Technical Support / Re: Cannot make PAW update to latest software 20161124
« on: December 04, 2016, 08:28:05 am »
Hi
It could be the version of your current PAW. Just to help eliminating a few things.

What version of PAW is currently installed.

If it's an older version it my not have the ability to update via USB. If this is the case. You can update via the connecting to your route or do a compleat SDCard format. Then you will be able to update via a memory stick.

Hi
I will try to help if I can. OK lets start from the beginning.... First don't plug the USB from you PAW to you PC. This lead is for powering your PAW only and not for data or updates.
OK, Unplug your PAW from your PC and connect as you would when you go fly with your Ipad. Now open Safari and type in the 192.168.1.1 You should now have the PAW home page. Press the update page button on the top. Now as you have already been connected to your PC, you should have the new version next to the the install now button? If yes click Install and hold off doing anything for 5 mins. If the update is not showing follow the instructions for updating via a USB memory stick as it is a lot easier that way. If you are still having problems, Post on here so we can help you,

Sadly work stops a trip to the show this year. Thank you for your offer. I will look into contacting the local glider club and see there response to to a test in there area. Lee talked about a bug with FLARM mouse in the GPS data passing to PAW. I have not notesed any problems with FLARM redbox supplying GPS data to PAW. How did you test for this?
