General Discussion / Re: Can GPS be added
« on: August 29, 2015, 08:39:29 pm »
OK,
Just testing the completed Pilotaware. (on the Ground) I was wondering if the PI could power the Gamin GLO GPS direct from one of the ports on the PI. After removing the battery from the Garmin, It was plugged into on of the USB ports om the PI.....

Yes it can power the garmin GLO with no problems at all. With blue tooth turned on within the Ipad all works well.

So this leads up to my Question.....?
Does the Garmin GLO produce NMEA sentence from the USB port?
Can it provide the GPS direct into the Pilotaware?

If it does provide GPS NMEA from the port it could be useful for connecting the PI direct to the transponder and providing the GPS into the PI and onto the Ipad or Android (All could work in one box)

I have just received the September edition of the Light Aircraft Association, what a great article on the Pilotaware. This should help with the development of the device. Very well written Lee.

Your article says you will be in the home builders tent at the rally this year. I'm intending on flying into the show on Sunday (weather permitting) so I'm very much looking forward to meeting you.

p.s. If I do need to think about an Ipad, pls let me have a minimum spec for one - I have never owned any Apple products.

Bob,
I'm using an iPad mini. It is just the 16GB version and it is a older version. So any new ones wil be ok.

General Discussion / Transmitting 2 ADS-B Signels
« on: August 20, 2015, 11:14:54 am »
Hi

Just going a step further into fitting PilotAware into an Aircraft. If the Aircraft has ADS-B connected and active via the transponder, then using PilotAware the Aircraft would be transmitting 2 ADS-B singles.

OK Air Traffic will only receive the signal carried by the transponder ADS-B out, but if you spot that aircraft on your sky demon, Will you see two Aircraft together?

It may be advisable to disconnect the PilotAware ADS-B transmission if you are using the Aircraft Transponder to transmit your ADS-B signal

Have I got this correct?

I'm Based at Sherburn. May-be we could Arrange to be in the same area or meet for a coffee one weekend (Sunday is best for me) My Aircraft is an Europa XS G-IRPW

How about a Charge 4 USB Power?

 http://www.charge4.co.uk/

They are Software run. I currently use on on the IPad. But not yet tested with Pilotaware.

Richard.

Hi Richard,
I have not tried these, they do look expensive  ???
I own a couple of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/External-50000mAh-Power-Bank-Portable-DUAL-USB-Battery-Charger-For-Mobile-Phone-/271955860042?hash=item3f51d51a4a

When fully charged, they will run PilotAware for about 4-5 hours
charging does take a long time
Thx
Lee

OK Lee,
I Have tested PilotAware and the Charge2 today in the air from Sherburn (Very Busy in the air today) I could not get the Charge2 to operate correctly with the PilotAware, The Charge2 tries to keep connecting power to the PilotAware but keeps turning the power off and re-starting again. It does this some times when I plug in the Ipad. I'm not sure why? It needs JCurtis to clarify what may be happening. It is as thought the Charge2 keeps re-starting, (Red light flashing, No green lights) Ipad only Works fine.

The only traffic I could see in the air today was Landing Heavy's at Leeds. (Set to 5000ft) It needs all the GA traffic to output ADS....

I have already tested out the glonass usb gps which you can get for about £10

Thx
Lee

Lee Which Model Have you tested.

Would it not be better to build  the GPS within the box. There will be a lot of wires coming out of the PilotAware Box with a USB GPS.

Lee,
Yes the Charge4 Is about £100 but you get what you pay for.
I tryed diffrent 12v power supply and all gave bad transceiver interference. the Charge4 has been worked to reduce Transceiver interference, and it does what it says on the tin. I have one fitted permanently in my Aircraft panel.
I will report back on the ability to power both the PilotAware and IPad at the same time.

Lee,
You are Correct. All working now. I managed to find another USB power cable and tried that (Its a Old Galaxy Phone USB) and hay!!! presto!!! all fired into action.
You are on the ball with the Power Cable and Power supply. I gave myself a good slap for not trying it (earlier. (Sorry to be a pain)

Thank you for all your help.

Lee,
I'm Still having problems !!!!  It is looking more like a compatibility or something....

OK I can get the IPad to see the PilotWare  ( the Unit you have put together for me. Thank you for this) I Know it works because you have tested it. It keeps dropping out before I've even got it sorted with in Sky demon.  Sometimes the WIFI lights are on And sometimes they don't come on at all unless I restart the unit. Some times the Ipad will see it and sometime it will not. That is as far as I can get with it. If I plug the DV Receiver back it I cant get the WiFi to even light up and nothing can see it If Removed The PC and Ipad can see it. but drops out. I was wondering if it could be a power supply fault too. I'm awaiting a better cable but not yet arrived.

Do you also have any Ideas?

General Discussion / Can GPS be added
« on: August 12, 2015, 10:10:05 pm »
just wanted to know if a GPS card can also be added to the Pilotaware and to the Pi board to all work together as one unit.

This would make Pilotaware  completely  independent ..... Or in other words using an IPad with out the built in GPS their would be no need for a Garman glow for example.
