General Discussion / Re: ADSB receiver dongle

Probably will! I'm assuming you techies know what definitely won't work!

Buy one and try it. Don't see why it shouldn't work.  :o ;D

Any news on the compatibility of this one quoted here?

I've kept using a mini dongle myself as I've put an SMA connector on it, but I also have these sort of things for other SDR work.......

.......You can also get "premium" R820T dongles with SMA connectors. They're normally used for other SDR (Software Defined Receiver) work, but I don't see why they won't work with a PilotAware.

This one looks interesting Paul. Narrow metal case and clearance to adjacent dongle should help heat dissipation (one picture shows 2 side by side in a Pi - which we certainly can't do with ours) though these do look a bit 'thicker' height wise, so might possibly obstruct ports in the 'top' (or bottom) row. It is reported to use an R820T2 chipset. If Lee can confirm whether this is compatible it might be worth buying one to try. I certainly agree that SMA connectors are stronger and likely to prove more reliable in the long term than MCX.

I haven't used PAW in the air as yet, only via tablet and pc. I can see the issue from both sides some lack of clarity from the text and the possibility of obstructing map features behind it.

Would it be possible I wonder to have either
a) the text in higher contrast if the alert is within a distance set by the user dependent on individual needs and/or
b) the text alternates on and off, say on for 2 secs and off for 2

The latter may be too confusing I suppose but personally I don't think I'll be too bothered by the reg of the plane I haven't become visual with yet and which is getting closer.

Thanks Paul - yes meant the USB where the wifi dongle is.

Will give the other solution a shot later. Got a garage to clean out (apparently!) and hoping to fly later if the wind is ok...

No I meant using the Wifi port to cable to the PC but see that the ethernet port could be a solution.

Re the GPS signal, yes it was fine. Or at least I'm assuming so as I could see airliners on the traffic page. I did use the tablet which worked ok though not as well as on its own gps which locates signal well.

On the SD dropdown for Go Flying there are options for GPS?

Start Gps
Connect to Flarm device
Connect to Dynon Skyview
Connect to X-Plane

Have tried them all!

As a matter of interest can the PAW unit be cabled to a pc via the wifi port

Do you mean ethernet port? I've had my PAW connected to my router via ethernet and then run Sky Demon on my home network connected to it. You need to keep the Wifi dongle in when doing that as you need to have the 192.168.1.1 address available, and your router must be on another address.

When you had a lack of GPS signal, was the PAW situated somewhere with a clear view of the sky to be able to get a GPS signal?

Thanks Lee,
Done that but no joy. When SD tries to get a GPS signal from the PAW it either gives an error message, freezes on looking for GPS or I get a message SD isn't working and shuts down. I'm using a laptop on a docking station and wifi only though could hard wire. Laptop is seeing PAW ok as I can look at the traffic page etc. Not a big issue but will spend some non flying time looking at it too. Have ordered the dipole aerial and GPS mouse for the plane.
As a matter of interest can the PAW unit be cabled to a pc via the wifi port or will it work wifi only?
Thanks again,
Sean

I'm trying to connect my new PAW to a PC to see live traffic as demonstrated at Sywell. I have it working on a tablet fine but is there a way to connect to a windows PC with Skydemon. PAW is connected to the PC via but not Skydemon via GPS in go flying mode.
As its pi$$ing down here I thought I would at least watch Ryanair etc!

Thanks Peter.

I've ordered some Anker batteries and now just need the other bits. Will keep an eye on the hardware site - hourly!

Morning,
Bought my PAW at Sywell and have it running at home but realise that I have limited space in the plane. Spoke with Peter on Sunday and should have bought the GPS mouse and di-pole then but now want to order. I see they are out of stock on the hardware site. Any idea of availability?
On an aside I just would like to say thanks for being so helpful on Saturday. This is a great innovation.
Regards,
Sean
