Technical Support / What does Pilot Aware with Flarm transmit to the OGN?
« on: October 04, 2018, 09:59:28 am »
Hi

If you got to the OGN open glider network http://wiki.glidernet.org/ then under the heading LIVE on the left hand side menu, click on link KTRAX TRACKING and then the link ALL FLARM/OGN, there is a 28 day flight log of Flarm and OGN Tracker receives.  I can see on 30th September my microlight (with Hex 406C23) appeared in the logs twice as per snapshots below. Once as  “ogn:406C23” and once as "icao:406C23". I assume the "icao:406C23" is my ADSB out but what does the other "ogn:406C23" signify as I don't have an OGN Tracker fitted. I do have Pilot Aware and a Flarm Classic Mouse, and so, if anything, shouldn't the "ogn:406C23" really have shown up as "flarm:406C23"  ?

Technical Support / More Traffic Screen queries on PAW
« on: September 11, 2018, 03:16:24 pm »
Hi

Firstly, I paste below 2 x different screenshots of my PAW Traffic page. Any idea why on the top  screenshot, it shows my own plane at the very top (highlighted red) and on the other screenshot below that, my plane is missing?  I assume it can't just be random. I also assume it is not meant to be showing my own plane anyway. They are both from 8th September taken at 13.55 and 14.29 respectively.

Secondly, is the below screenshot with the red showing what other planes see from me?  If so, then why isn't my full reg showing under the Reg colum (just a "G"); why isn't there also an "F" in the Mode column even though I am also transmitting Flarm and why does the last "Aircraft, Owner" column just has dashes instead of my details?

NB:  My set-up is Sky Demon with Pilot Aware Classic and a Flarm Classic mouse (made by LV Nav) plugged into the PAW. I also transmit uncertified ADSB through my Funke transponder using the GPS from a Kanardia Horis 57.

Any advice much appreciated.

Technical Support / Traffic Screen Query

I attach a screenshot of my PAW Traffic page just after I landed yesterday early evening. Any idea why so many commercial jets only show an “F” under the Mode column. I thought that meant Flarm?

NB:  My set-up is Sky Demon with Pilot Aware Classic and a Flarm Classic mouse (made by LV Nav) plugged into the PAW. I also transmit uncertified ADSB via a Kanardia Horis 57.

Technical Support / Seeing PAW and ADSB from same plane
« on: August 19, 2018, 06:58:06 am »
On an impromptu 6 x fixed-wing microlight fly-out on Friday, myself and one other had PAW and ADSB out installed. We both use it via Sky Demon. The problem was I was seeing two of him, almost superimposed on top of each other and each with his same call sign. It would seem I am therefore receiving his PAW and ADSB as two separate planes? Thoughts on what one (or both) of us need to do?

Technical Support / Flarm mouse
« on: May 08, 2018, 07:23:05 am »
A 9 month old spare Flarm mouse was going at less than half price so I bought it and just yesterday  added it to my (excellent) Pilot Aware set-up. This was primarily so gliders can now see me, but also to pick up gliders when not in an OGN area. I use Sky Demon.

1.   The Flarm GPS spends most of time saying zero satellite fixes unlike my Pilot Aware GPS extension mouse which had a more or less perfect record at fixing on satellites. Having looked at these forums am I correct in thinking I can simply re-plug in my Pilot Aware GPS extension mouse and Pilot Aware will automatically use that for GPS and ignore the GPS on the Flarm mouse?

2.   If I am in an OGN area I assume I wont see a duplicate glider (one from the Flarm and one from the OGN) but can anyone clarify?

Technical Support / SOLVED: Sky Demon - connectivity screen query
« on: November 20, 2017, 06:19:21 am »
The Pilot Aware manual states Sky Demon should be set to "Live Data When Planning". I see Sky Demon also has the option "Live Data When Planning And Flying"

Does it matter which one to choose and what is the difference?

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN-R map query
« on: November 06, 2017, 04:31:57 pm »
Is it possible to see graphically just the UK ground stations (I assume OGN-R) that Pilot Aware can actually receive secondary FLARM from. I saw on the Pilot Aware website www.pilotaware.com/ogn that there is a link to the OGN range tool. This link advises to put "PW%" into "Show All". I thought I did this and got the graphic display that I have (hopefully) attached here. You will see it shows lots of green balloons and some red and purple ballooons and a couple of blue balloons

I couldn't readily work out which of these are transmitting the FLARM data to Pilot Aware and would be grateful if someone could clarify and also what each colour code means as the map doesn't seem to have a key on the side as to what each colour represents?

If a single plane is transmitting (1) Pi3 (2) Mode S and (3) ADS-B (likely uncertified ads-b)   then what would another Pilot Aware user see on their screen - presumably not 2 aircraft (pi3 + ads-b) and a proximity alert (mode s)

I couldn’t find this topic elsewhere and apologies if already covered

Technical Support / Transponder interrogation query
« on: October 29, 2017, 05:58:29 am »
If you are flyinging in an area outside say a LARS, does this mean transponders in other planes are not being interrogated and therefore silent,  so that Pilot Aware won't detect them  - or have I totally misunderstood this?

Secondly,  if  another plane is in the same area that has equipment to detect Mode C/S, will this  "wake-up" the the other transponders in the area, so I can then, in theory, detect them with my own Pilot Aware?

Technical Support / Swamping aerial signal
« on: October 24, 2017, 01:39:30 pm »
Are there any mimimum distances you really want to place  the P3i aerial and the ADSB aerial from an existing transponder aerial (obviously the more distance the better) and which one is more critical to keep away from the existing transponder aerial?

Can anyone recommend a good monopole whip aerial to maximise reception of proximity alerts of Mode C and Mode S.  I am intending to install the aerial below the aircraft pointing directly downwards. Also should it ideally be 68.9mm in length for 1090MHz?

I ask as looking at the forum messages there never seems an ADS-B reception issue but a fair number saying they feel they see far less Mode C or S alerts than they would have expected for the number of GA and light aircraft they see passing en route.

NB Pilot Aware sell a P3i stubby tuned monopole whip. It is currently out of stock. If it were in stock would it work as well for picking up Mode C or S even though tuned for P3i.
