Technical Support / Re: Rosetta & Skydemon Aural alerts

It's a well known 'secret' that Bluetooth should be coming to PAW very soon. If you have a Bluetooth headset then that would be a very easy fix to the problem.

If you wanted to plug your PAW into the radio and have SD over Bluetooth then you could always stick a 3.5mm BT transmitter into the jack of your iPad (or similar) and get SD audio that way.

If you don't have a BT headset then a suggestion on another site is to have some in-ear BT 'buds' which would be able to receive the BT outputs from either of the above.

If you do want to combine both inputs into the radio/intercom then you'll need to have some sort of mixer. If you search the Forum for this you'll find I've already made a nuisance of myself and asked quite a few questions about it  ;)

Finally, if you search for Bluetooth on this Forum you'll find a suggestion for a cheap way of 'mixing' audio inputs and a BT receiver into a little 'star' sharing device for several sets of headsets to plug into.

Wiring up the TT21/22 has also been explained in some depth recently and sounds really quite simple, even to me  ;D

Seriously, the search function will reveal all you seek.

General Discussion / Re: PAW sans PAW Rx/Tx

Thanks Lee. I shall pass on your info and see if that works out as the best solution to his ADSB In quandary.

I think it is  :)

General Discussion / PAW sans PAW Rx/Tx

This should be a simple one for you gurus  :D

A guy I've been conversing with in Oz is looking for an easy way to get ADSB In and then displayed on his MGL EFIS (via RS232). I've described PAW and how it would also give Mode C/S indications but obviously not OGN R and no multi-lateration when it comes out. I don't know if Oz Runways (similar to Sky Demon) is able to display traffic but that is easy enough to find out and it is more the traffic to his EFIS that he's interested in and the FTDI cable is an elegant and simple solution.

Now, the obvious snag is not being allowed to transmit etc on the PAW frequency in Oz but what I would like to find out is if there is a way in which PAW can be used as an ADSB receiver etc without it transmitting on the PAW frequency and how we could go about disabling that function.

That's it.....over to the experts  ;)

Chris (aka Moffrestorer) was kind enough to send me details of his mixer. I got my trusty soldering iron out and pretty much copied his design. My unit is made to run a single wire to the Trig radio aux in, so that all the stuff goes through the intercom and is muted etc.

I did it as a project and a bit of fun. I've tested it wired to a speaker and with three inputs and it certainly seems to work.....which is surprising when you see how awful I am at soldering.

I don't know if I'll use it as I can get all the stuff I want through the intercom and my Bluetooth headsets when PAW goes to BT out  ;)

I'll see if I can attach some pics of my handiwork  :o

I really do have to stop buying things because they're shiny. Here I am with a veritable plethora of equipment that I'm probably not going to install on my EuroFOX because things have changed since I bought the very latest gadget. A good example is my SP12 super-duper, you can't bend it, all singing and dancing external GPS module. SIL = 3 and can talk to all my bits of MGL gear. I got this so I could get SIL = 1 when it was bolted to my TT21 transponder's extended squitter. Now the clever bloke at MGL has updated the internal GPS in the EFIS so that kicks out SIL = 1 on the same set up, without the SP12. I now have a redundant black box  :(

I must be the a gadget sellers dream  ;D

(Owner of a PAW Classic that is still in its box because I got a bit carried away buying it before the aeroplane has even taken shape in the factory)  :o

I'm going to stop reading your links, Paul. Given how much I paid for my PAW external antenna I don't really want to know how much I was ripped off  :'(

How about putting inline volume control before the cables reach the Belkin splitter. Does this make it an audio mixer  :)

Technical Support / Re: GPS feed from Dynon Skyview ?

Hi Russ,

What you are asking is very similar to that which I queried about NMEA from a GPS source (MGL) to PAW and it seems it is possible using a simple lead. I suppose the initial snag will be establishing on your Skyview an NMEA Out source.

This is the thread in which I got the information:

General Discussion / Re: Bluetooth Audio
« on: March 29, 2019, 01:51:39 pm »
Hi Russ,

If it's any help at all, my plan is to stick a Pi3 in my PAW 'classic' (same as yours) and then pay the bit extra for the guys to do whatever they need to do with bridges and things so it works. I, too, want the smaller size of the classic and will be installing external antennas etc, so don't really need the benefits of portability that Rosetta brings. I would then like to eventually use my Pi2 so I can build an OGN-R station. This is all quite some time away (I might receive my aircraft in Jul/Aug) but a chap has to have a plan. The Pi3 has built in Bluetooth as well as built in WIFI, so no need for dongles.

I've been pestering Lee & Co for so long about Bluetooth that they'd run me out of town if I didn't use it  :)

I've always thought I'd end up using Sky Demon as well but with PAW audio annunciating bearingless targets and the 'intelligent' audio that is rumoured to be in place with the MLAT update, I'm seriously looking at EasyVFR4 (when it comes out) and PAW audio to my headset. It's got quite a few features that look pretty nifty to me and they aren't so negative on the bearingless target subject.

It might be useful to keep it in there, since the Aircrew display has a USB input. You never know who might want to make use of the facility.

That's interesting, Lee (and imaginative)  :)

I don't have horse in the race and it is purely me being nosey but if the OP were to do as you have suggested would all the collision avoidance software work on his Oudie with the Flarm data that has been routed through PAW? I understand that with your solution he would be able to see Flarm and PAW traffic but I was just wondering if the unit would still be able to do its traffic avoidance job of Flarm targets, as well as see both.

So on this particular device is it not possible to have Flarm (with all the bells and whistles as you normally would in a glider) AND, via serial input, PAW as well?

From my very brief look at the manual, Peter, it seems you may be able to do both. Of course, I could very easily be mistaken  :)

I've never seen the unit before but it would seem from the manual, page 13, that serial inputs are possible. So, much like connecting PAW to an EFIS etc, you could get an FTDI USB to serial adapter, something like:

https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/kvm-mixed-cable-assemblies/6877828/

This can then take the output from PAW to your serial input on the IGC (maybe using the DB9 adapter would be the easiest way of doing this). After that it would be a matter of configuring it in the COM 4 settings. That would require a bit of reading on your part as I'm too dim to figure that bit out  :-[
