Have you ever considered how much time tinkerers, like you, take up in having to reply to unnecessary queries, brought about because you can’t just simply turn it in and allow it to do it’s job? I get people with similar ‘what about’ questions in my job; continually trying to fix something that isn’t broken. My patience is much reduced compared to Lee and Peter and I can only imagine what I’d be thinking.

Just leave it alone and go and build something else to play with.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I really don't have any in-depth knowledge of DHCP, sub net whats its etc.

My set up:

1. SkyDemon with PilotAware enabled as a 3rd party device and 'Use Internet in flight' switched on in Navigation Options. Installed on iPad Mini 4. It is the GSM version (so has an internal GPS) but no sim card in place.
2. 4G dongle plugged into USB power supply (NOT plugged into PilotAware)
3. 4G Dongle SSID and password saved in the Hotspot section of the Network configuration page in PilotAware & router function enabled
4. Switch the power on. iPad connects to PAW WIFI (if it doesn't, select PAW SSID in Settings). 4G dongle connects automatically to PAW (it always does but, if not, connect in Network settings).
5. Hit 'Go Flying' and use PilotAware
6. Behold GPS position, traffic displayed and Internet on iPad Mini to update SkyDemon winds etc.
7. Normally split screen with SkyDemon and Safari. Go into the Safari address bar and type 192.168.1.1 (okay, I actually have it as a bookmark but you know what I mean) and have the Radar display alongside SD.

No mucking around trying to outsmart the kit. No idea that 168.192.1.1. is somehow a bad thing. To me it's just an address to type.

It works.

Not a brilliant e.g below as I'd just lost the 4G signal but at least the orange blob lets me know that

You are absolutely correct, Lee and I've just realised what I wrote above is total bolleaux  :-\. My dongle isn't plugged into my PAW at all. It's plugged into my Charge 4 for power. I have no idea why I wrote that but I will amend it. The dongle WIFI signal is just 'there' for the PAW to connect to wirelessly. No cables to PAW involved at all.

Can you plug a USB GSM dongle into the PAW box for upstream internet access instead of joining a mobile phone's hotspot?

Yes, this is what I have in my aircraft. I have a 4G dongle plugged into one of the PAW my Charge 4 USB ports via a USB extension cable (for power). When I power up the aircraft the 4G dongle connects automatically to my PAW iGrid dongle. I have the PAW router function enabled, so my iPad Mini (without a sim card inserted) gets Internet from the 4G dongle via the PAW.

It's still only as good as a 4G signal gets in the air but it all works well when the GSB 'blob' is green. I get iGrid data and my iPad gets an Internet connection to update SkyDemon.

Technical Support / Re: PAW audio to Trig radio

If you're going to hardwire, why not wire a female jack into your Trig radio and have the ability to plug any 3.5mm device into the Aux circuit? You could then get a 3.5mm male to male lead and plug one end into the PAW and the other into the Trig's female jack. If you decided to go Bluetooth in the future, you could plug a Bluetooth receiver into the same jack.

Seems pretty simple wiring (below)

An alternative suggestion is to wire a Bluetooth receiver into the Aux input. This way you can Bluetooth audio from, for instance, a SkyDemon-equipped tablet and then enjoy the ‘Intelligent Audio’, as opposed to raw PAW audio. Of course, if you want raw PAW you can Bluetooth your PAW to the BT receiver. The point being, if you did something like that you have more options.

Also, are you sure you are not flying with SafeSky or another Internet based form of EC on your phone? If you are, you'll get a ghost aircraft all the time.

Very good point. We had a EuroFOX customer who did exactly that. It took ages to figure out why he was chasing his own tail, because all of his settings etc were spot on. It's only when he mentioned a new product he'd heard about that the lightbulb came on.

If it's anything like the Dynon SkyView, I am 99% sure I only get a 'Traffic' visual warning when it sees Mode C (possibly Mode S). I have got traffic warning audio switched off, as I get that from SkyDemon via Bluetooth iPad to headset.

I am pretty certain I don't get a 'Traffic' banner when it sees ASDB/PilotAware traffic. In other words, positional traffic good, non-positional traffic bad.

You could reduce your Mode C/S filters in your PAW or, of course, you could set it so it doesn't show non-positional traffic. This way the traffic will not get passed (or is it parsed......I don't know the jargon) to your EFIS and will, therefore, not appear on the EFIS and will not set off any warnings.

You might be able to see the two targets on the map below. One is Sandown's ATOM station and the other is ADSB/PAW. Note there is no 'Traffic' banner. The same thing on the PFD but I can't attach that because of the daft photo size restriction.

I am using a Lenovo M9 so different hardware to you, so does sound Android 13 specific.

If it's Android specific you know the answer.

I would try Flarm Out (115K Baud rate) and link it to the GDL90/NMEA serial traffic input.

Flarm Out is used for the Dynon EFIS (who I think make the AFS systems) and I believe the correct information is sent from the Flarm Out USB in the Pilot Aware.

My Dynon HDX uses this set up, albeit with a lower baud rate.

I posted the question about SkyDemon muting on their forum but then got to thinking a bit more. Since SkyDemon has no connection nor input from my radio and there is no muting function in the iPad Bluetooth set up, it can only be my headset doing the muting. For once I read the manual and my headset (DC One-X) Bluetooth defaults to muting every time it is turned off. I had forgotten this, so much remember in future to press the Bluetooth button and disable muting each time, or else I rarely get the audio warnings because of radio transmissions, static or heavy breathing.

Sean has said he plugs his SkyDemon 3.5 mm audio lead into his headset control box to get SD's audio piped to his ears. I suspect there may well be muting on this circuit and, hopefully, a means of turning off that muting to get SD audio.

It's worth considering that a tiny bit of static, let alone normal radio reception can cause the SkyDemon verbal warnings to stay quiet. I am not sure if this is a SkyDemon thing (I cannot find any reference to muting in the manual) or if it is the radio settings. I have my iPad connected to SkyDemon via Bluetooth, so I do not think it is necessarily anything to do with my radio muting settings. What I do know is my SkyDemon traffic audio is non-existant if there's radio chatter or static.

I realise that but I was responding to Deker's suspicion:

I think it is an Android version issue (or my tablet is knackered - don't think so as it works fine on my home wifi).

I flew yesterday and no snags at all.

I'll just muddy those waters by saying I have an iPad Mini 4 and not an Android in sight  ???

I'm leaning in the same direction. I have had a couple of 'Waiting For Device' messages but they did not last very long and auto-connected again. The most recent was after only about 15 minutes. I have a serial connection to my Skyview HDX and traffic remained on the Dynon screen. To add to the confusion, my PAW is served GPS from the HDX and the GPS remained on the HDX, so I do not think it is GPS related.
