Hi,

Definitely saw one PAW user show up at Wolverhampton yesterday lunchtime when I on the ground. Was it you ? Did you see me on it ? (G-SARV)
Sorry I can't remember the reg. Eurostar ?

That's your Ethernet MAC address which PilotAware uses now instead of the Wifi MAC address.
It doesn't make any difference to the operation though.

Have you re-entered the licence information on the config page ?

(by going to address 192.168.1.1 on your iPad browser when connected to the PAW Wifi, then tap "Configure").

Enter the licence then tap "Save". Your old licence will still work with the new address.

Steve your work is brilliant and I am 100% for it, and grateful for it.

I'm not sure fully certified GPSs would work with early Funke Mode S+ES transponders either though if the transponder is hard coding the SIL/SDA (or just not transmitting it at all). Surely these have to come from the GPS (in which case it should pass them on) ?

Do keep up the good work!

And unlike most consumer computer hardware, you can't upgrade the firmware yourself - great.

Please post corrections / suggestions to the Documentation thread so I have one place to track these and pick them up for the next version of the guide - thanks!

The Mac Disk Utility works fine yes, just make sure you delete ALL the partitions and create 1 full sized partition on your card.
New cards will just have 1 partition anyway, but ones used for Raspberry Pi / PAW before will have a number of partitions.
Delete them and replace with 1 newly formatted partition all each time you upgrade the PAW software.

I guess it would be good if I added a step-by-step guide to this in the software guide for Mac users.

This whole thing is a farce. I wonder:

a) How many uncertified GPS + Mode S ES transponder combinations are out there which actually pass the requirements of the trial/LAA-mod and have successfully joined the trial/LAA mod, compared to combinations that do not.

b) How many a/c are flying around with combinations connected that do not pass the requirements because it 'appears to work'.

Perhaps the manufacturers will get their act together in the future, but it does feel like those of us that bought an early Mode S transponder because it had ES/ADS-B "capability" have been somewhat taken for a ride.

Probably a bit academic but does anyone know if they didn't conform to 'good' specs or if the specs were too vague or arrived late(r) ?

If the former then arguably they should give us free upgrades as it was not fit for purpose. If the latter then I guess we just have to suck it up  :(

That really is pretty poor when it just needs to to forward the GPS info.
And we get the privilege of having to pay to have it fixed although I think ours is too old to upgrade anyway.
It's a technology shambles  :( >:(

Hmmmm - all a bit depressing!

ADS-B out is not just used by the big boys - fly around Oxford and there are a bunch of Senecas at our levels on a daily basis.

p.s. I posted the above as, although clearly not identical, it is analogous to the sort of errors that I believe the Funke TRT800 ADS-B-capable transponders with firmware below v5.3 can exhibit.

You've seen evidence of positional errors rather than lack of SIL/SDA ? I've not seen that in my (limited) testing. I would think it would the GPS source rather than the transponder which will just parrot out the NMEA message coords surely ?

I've not done a lot of testing but appears to show up in FR24 sensibly and not as TMLAT !
