OGN-R PilotAware / Grafana Receivers Offline?
« on: November 29, 2021, 11:06:11 pm »
Hi Lee,

The Grafana display at the link below appears to be offline.

http://grafana.glidernet.org/d/000000001/receivers?orgId=1&var-receiver=Radley

It was quite a useful diagnostic tool for stations as it tended to show clearly when one or other receivers had checked out (as occasionally happened).

Any thoughts as to what has happened to that service?

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Cannot get clock to sync to correct time
« on: March 31, 2021, 07:57:23 pm »
Thanks Lee,
Lee once again hit the nail on the head - and identified the problem as a network issue.
It was caused by having a PAW unit plugged in to the wired network (running temporarily in ground station mode) alongside the OGN-R unit.

It had been working fine for months but we recently had a rare power trip so both OGN-R and PAW restarted together.

There was an unfortunate interaction between the PAW and OGN-R sharing the same network and it resulted in the OGN-R unit not being able to see/resolve any external names/addresses even though all local network addresses available. So could not connect to NTP or the Grid.

PAW now not connected to the home network, and OGN-R is connected to Internet, NTP and Grid. All good. Hopefully will be able to see return of Grafana heartbeat.

Thanks again
Best wishes
Chris

OGN-R PilotAware / Cannot get clock to sync to correct time
« on: March 29, 2021, 10:50:11 pm »
I was having problems with PWRADLEY not being reliable and not connecting to aprs.glidernet.org:14580 (not connected). Grafana which has been reliably showing a daily heartbeat had started flat-lining :-(.

I rebuild OGN-R from scratch using the full distribution and set it up as usual. However on restart the time/date initialises to 2021-03-05. I was expecting it to periodically sync to NTP but the utility datetimectl status showed no NTP. How should the time be set up and what status should I expect. It also cannot connect to Grid.

This is a Pi3 which I suspect has a different time default to Pi2.

Any thoughts, please.

Technical Support / Re: Not seeing OGN-R MLAT traffic on PAW via ATOM
« on: February 06, 2021, 06:28:23 pm »
Thanks Lee,

That helps.

Yes, both options are set as described. So to understand this better; the PAW detects a Mode C/S bearingless target and send the ICAO ID via the link (when established) to the OGN-R station to request the MLAT position of that target from 360Radar. The response is returned via the OGN-R station to the PAW and displayed. I'll check that the PAW is picking up all the mode C/S it should be (as the two units are using different aerials and not necessarily reporting visibility of the same aircraft). I'll split the external 1090 feed to both and I suspect that may resolve it.

Best regards
Chris

Technical Support / Not seeing OGN-R MLAT traffic on PAW via ATOM
« on: February 06, 2021, 02:26:04 pm »

Hi Lee,

I'm trying to get MLAT traffic to appear on a new PAW Rosetta. I'm running the Rosetta temporarily as a ground station co-located with OGN-R PWRadley.

PWRadley is showing MLAT traffic in the traffic list.

The PAW is connecting to the ATOM, receiving airfield information and METARS - all very good but no MLAT traffic visible on Rosetta.

As an example M-ETAL came overhead at low level and I was able to watch it on the OGN-R radar all the way to landing in the west - but no visibility of it at all on PAW radar.

Do I need to register either the PAW or the OGN-R to see MLAT aircraft.

Best regards
Chris

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN Latest not installing on Pi3B+
« on: January 09, 2021, 02:45:41 pm »
Hi Lee,

I note earlier threads confirming that Pi 3B+ (and 4B) are not yet compatible with the latest OGN (zip install or run) (Version 20201230) or PAW.

The incompatibility with the 3B+ is also my experience so the below is just for information for anyone hitting the same problem.

It took me a bit of time to work out it wasn't the processor/memory card after attempting several new installs (at first suspecting a corrupted memory card).

Just an observation: On a Pi 3B the latest OGN installed build produces a non-fatal error at startup (below) shortly after switch-on (which then goes on to load and run the OGN with no issues). May be similar on PAW too.

   /init: line 27: can't create/sys/class/leds/led0/trigger: nonexistent directory
   [     1.346047] brcnfmac: brcmf_c_preinit_dcmds: Firmware version = w10: May 27 2016 00:13:38 Version 7.45.41.26 (r640327) FWID 01-df77e4a7
   [     1.362715] brcmfmac: brcmf_cfg80211_reg_notifier: not a ISO3166 code

On the 3B+ if the released zip image is transferred on to a memory card, the 3B+ will not run the OGN Install; it never starts. It will complete the install and load correctly if the memory card is put in a 3B (as one might expect).

If an OGN zip image is installed to the memory card using a 3B and then the memory card is transferred to a 3B+, again the processor simply stops shortly after power-up displaying the square 'rainbow' screen and goes no further.

Question: Is it necessary or desirable to run PAW and OGNR on the B3+ or 4B?? - clearly not; but if one has several other projects using these marvellous processors and one is continuing to buy them it makes sense get later variants as they will be more useful for longer. It is helpful if applications are not too processor specific as one can then choose whatever processor one has to hand to build and test (even though the PAW licencing is processor ID specific).

This is for my current PAW and OGNR ground stations, not a change to my Rosetta (3B).

Keep up the brilliant work; ATOM and Vector are great!
Best regards
Chris

Hi Lee,

OGN-R Version Sat 24-Oct-2020.

In my track file today I have some records which have Lat/Long and others Long/Lat (it is consistent for any particular aircraft). The Long/Lat ones put the aircraft at several thousand miles away. File attached. Any thoughts, please.

Interesting to see the AntennaPattern ranges of 0 35 95 110 157 118 0 0 0 0. How do I interpret these as I have no idea how good the outside aerial really is and would like to know.

Best regards Chris

General Discussion / Re: Release notes for latest version.
« on: September 07, 2020, 10:57:38 pm »
Thanks Lee,
I just ran the PAW Upgrade from the upgrade tab and selected the full install. It backed up all the settings; did the upgrade; fully restored the settings and came up flawlessly. Very well done!! Excellent work - it looks really good. I briefly investigated the IoS route but my phone and iPad Mini 2 are sadly IOS 12, not 13 :-(
OGN-R all going well too.
Just need to get flying.
All the best
Chris

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: METAR feature in latest software??
« on: June 12, 2020, 06:40:12 pm »
Thanks Peter,
Good to know that more good stuff is in the next PAW release. The METAR certainly looks good in OGN-R. :)

Hi Lee,
I like the PAW Radar with airfields and METAR info. Sadly I'm not seeing the same radar screen on the Classic PAW as on your CFG graphic. Am I failing to configure something?

General Discussion / Re: Generally reliable since last software update
« on: February 23, 2020, 10:37:05 pm »
Hi Lee,

Just a general example to show the excellent reliability and stability of the PAW build. The NooElec in my setup is plugged into a 12v Anker hub (as is the PAW).
Over 100 days of the PAW running uninterrupted as a ground station is good going and the sort of reliability one needs. Anyone who has had the misfortune to have a GPS drop-out whilst airborne using the excellent SkyDemon will be reminded suddenly of the value of the PLOG and map and the value of a reliable piece of kit.

Good work Lee. :)

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN-R 20191101 Not auto installing onto 20191008
« on: November 03, 2019, 10:26:34 pm »
As at 03-Nov-2019 Currently running OGN-R 20191008. Laster version appears to be reporting as 20191101, This is not auto-installing. There is an error message about a missing file when trying to use the manual update script, Normally this all works as expected, Any thoughts? (system has been restarted).

Last few lines of update script output......

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: OGN/R coverage map
« on: September 05, 2019, 06:48:55 pm »
Hi Ian,

It seems to work if you edit the % into the URL eg. http://ognrange.onglide.com/#PWR%,max,all,51.68450_-1.24500,9,#00990000:#009900ff,circles;

This lists the three sites starting with PWR ie Redhill, Radley and RhiwFaw

Hope this helps
