Technical Support / Re: Avidyne IFD Capstone support
« on: May 15, 2023, 04:06:28 pm »
I gave it one last try and got it working!!!!

Here are a few hints and tips to help others as there are a lot of steps to go through before it works...

  • Make sure you're running IFD 10.3 or later - it doesn't work in 10.2
  • Make sure you do NOT have a hardwired ADS-B receiver configured - this will (and should) always take precedence over an uncertified device connected over WiFi
  • Connect the IFD to the PilotAware network (Aux->Setup->Networks and add the WiFi network name and password)
  • Allow the IFD to receive data from the PilotAware hotspot (Aux->Setup->Devices->196.168.1.1->Always) - this was the step I'd missed
  • Configure the IFD to use Capstone protocol data (Maintenance->Config->Wireless Portables (Page 14)->Capstone->Enabled). To enter maintenance mode, either:
    • Insert a USB stick before powering up the IFD
    • Select Aux->Sys->Download Logs

When looking at the map page, you should now see an additional icon to the left of the TRK display. This icon is a red circle with a diagonal line through it and some cyan letters. If the letters are "TRFC" then the link to PilotAware is NOT working. If the letters are "TIS-B" then the link to PilotAware is WORKING. Traffic will appear as blue triangles with a speed-dependent extended track line, with a relative altitude behind and the aircraft registration in white text on a black box ahead of the aircraft symbol. Traffic is filtered by height and range using the settings within in PilotAware. Audible traffic alerts will NOT be produced by the IFD when the data is from an uncertified source, so you will have to continue to rely on PilotAware itself and/or your EFB.

I've tried to get the Capstone/IFD to work with PilotAware but thus far no luck. I have two devices connected to the PilotAwa re WiFi - an iPad running SkyDemon and the Avidyne IFD100 app, and the IFD itself.  SkyDemon will connect to either the PilotAware or the IFD, getting traffic from PAw (using either GDL90 or Pilotaware protocols) and sharing flight plans with the IFD, although sadly SkyDemon can't do both at the same time (you need to select which you want from the GoFlying menu). However the IFD doesn't seem to get the data out is expecting from Pilotaware,  reporting "data link fail".

Can I do anything else to diagnose?

Thanks Lee - sounds like it may be a setup and/or wetware issue. I'll keep trying and update as appropriate.

A good thought, but I don't think the bitrate is relevant in this context - it's a WiFi connection.

Having looked for the Capstone protocol, it does appear to be a bit of a hard thing to track down. Wikipedia does have some info about the FAA Capstone project, and some other references (e.g. Foreflight and some new articles) which suggest that Capstone is shorthand for "GDL-90 Extended" and/or "ADS-B over WiFi" and give some information about the protocol itself. The FAA GDL90 specification is available, but I can't find anything about the "Extended" part.

Mike Salmon from Avidyne suggests they will work with "equipment manufacturers" but not with individuals to assist with setups, including giving access to the "Avidyne SDK" if needed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXUIoAhVtfg from 25 minutes in seems to give the most information, especially the slide on screen at 35 minutes.

Technical Support / Avidyne IFD Capstone support

Avidyne IFD navigators running V10.3 software allow traffic (and weather) display from non-certified ADS-B receivers such as Stratus using the Capstone protocol.  Has anyone had any luck configuring this to work with PilotAware? I have just tried but got a message implying that no messages were being received from the PilotAware, even though both devices are connected to the same (PilotAware) WiFi network. Have I configured something incorrectly,  or is Capstone not supported (yet)?

General Discussion / Re: 2 things to tell new users

Not sure what you mean by..’there’s a 200’ allowance in altitude reporting’. If you mean from the transponder, Mode C transmits altitude in 100ft steps - correct, but with Mode S / Mode S-ES, the accuracy is within +/- 25 feet.

Mode S/S-ES can carry altitude data with a RESOLUTION of 25ft, but the ACCURACY is determined by the encoder and is only +/-200ft, and the RESOLUTION and PRECISION of most GA encoders is 100ft. Just changing the transponder to a Mode-S unit doesn't magically improve the accuracy of the system as a whole.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Stations Offline
« on: June 14, 2018, 09:06:52 pm »
I noticed that Redhill has been down a lot again recently, and despite having the latest software installed, it still refused to reboot correctly due to the rtlsdr-ogn service continually stopping and restarting the NTP daemon, never actually giving it time to synchronise before stopping it and restarting it again. I have now modified the init.d script to make NTP a pre-requisite before starting the rtlsdr-ogn service, and commented out the "while" loop in the rtlsdr-ogn service script which was continually restarting the NTP daemon. Reboots are now (a) much faster and (b) always seem to start both NTP and rtlsdr correctly. Watch this space!!!!

Thanks Ben :-)

A word of note, Paul Ruskin found a bug in the way the OGN waits for NTP to get up and running
he has a fix/workaround you may want to contact him about this. I do plan to add this into the standard installer

Thx
Lee

Redhill also suffered with this big, however the fix didn't really work either. I have a revised fix in place which seems to be reliable thus far.

Redhill tower has had internet connectivity problems recently - the fibre running under the runway broke! A new fibre has been installed and hopefully we should be up from now on.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Station Transmission Constraints on Re-Broadcast
« on: January 26, 2018, 07:34:39 am »
I'm going to support Lee's original numbers: doubling the TPR from 5km to 10km quadruples the amount of data, making a data rate reduction much more likely. I also challenge anyone to visually acquire a glider at 10km - even at 3km they are nearly invisible in my experience, so 5km gives plenty of notice even at RV speeds.

My only concern is around missed transmissions, and for that reason is prefer the data to be repeated as fast as possible within the legal limits.

Even in "Live data when planning" mode, for some obscure reason, SkyDemon doesn't stop trying to phone home when you press "go flying" but waits until takeoff, usually resulting in at least one irritating error message during taxi.

Outstanding news for an outstanding person. Well done, Keith!

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: OGN PAW up link do not see PAW trafic

I had the same sudo error, and the "measurements appear inconsistent" warning when setting up my OGN basestation yesterday. It seems to work though - although the "green pin" goes mauve a little too often for comfort. I believe Keith and Lee are looking into both errors.

A new OGN-R/PAW basestation is now just about up and running at Redhill, albeit with a temporary PAW aerial pending delivery of the correct cable. A couple of aircraft have already been spotted, and we'll be monitoring closely for correct operation over the next few days. Hopefully the final PAW aerial will be installed next weekend.

Same here - I'm just in the process of setting up another PilotAware-OGN station and the ognpaw.local address doesn't work - I had to use the IP address gleaned from my DHCP server. Other than that, all good so far. Aerials expected to go up on Sunday...
