Technical Support / Rosetta / Sky Demon / uAvionix AV-30 combo
« on: August 03, 2023, 02:00:13 pm »
Hi All

I’m currently happily running a Rosetta with traffic display on SD. I wish to install a uAvionix AV-30 EFIS. This can also display traffic (via a wireless link device ‘AV-Link’) from a GDL-90 source.

Questions for anyone who has already done this (or just knows the answers!):

1) Does the Rosetta transmit a wi-fi GDL-90 signal that the AV-30 can use to display traffic?

2) Would this display ALL traffic (PAW, Flarm, etc., as SD does) on the AV-30, not just ADSB?

3) If the answer to 1) is ‘yes’, can the Rosetta ‘talk’ to SD and the AV-30 simultaneously? I.e. happily display live traffic on both devices.

Many thanks for any useful comments.

Chris

The dongle is velcroed to the fabric floor of the aircraft underneath the seats, so should get a pretty good view of all that is below it. I did experiment with the supplied external antennas but, once again with a 4G dongle/router, found it actually had fewer bars. SO no external antennas attached.
Just to clarify for future readers, the dongle's external antennas are for the WiFi signal, not the 4G signal.

There's a dedicated folder for fixed installations which has info.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Antenna ground plane

Hi Peter

Thanks very much for the comprehensive and understandable reply – it all makes sense. My bad in assuming they were monopoles. I did wonder why the FLARM antenna was so much longer, but see why now.

I can sleep a little easier now, knowing my setup is basically OK.

Best regards

Chris

OGN-R PilotAware / Antenna ground plane

I’ve completed my ATOM-GRID installation and it is online and working. I have a question about grounding.

My very basic knowledge of an end fed monopole is that one side of the feed is connected to the antenna and the other side to “ground”. My question is, does this ground have to be physically grounded (earthed)? This is particularly relevant to the PAW antenna as it incorporates a ground plane.

In my installation the antenna mounting pole is insulated from earth – not by design but because the pole mounting brackets are fixed to the side of a brick building. There is no earth going to the electronics (in a plastic box) as the PSU is POE.

Would there be any benefit in earthing the mounting pole and thus providing a ground to the coax outer?

Vector will show FLARM(gliders only)

Small point, but for the sake of accuracy RAF Prefects and some other training aircraft are FLARM equipped.
