Technical Support / Re: adsb (out) not showing on Vector
« on: March 22, 2024, 10:41:04 am »
To answer the last post, the FUNKE transponder was new 2 years ago - I had to exchange the old one which did not support adsb.  There is no warning of GPS failure in the transponder.  I can check the GPS data input using the setup mode but that is only available with the transponder in standby.  So I have checked it on the ground only.  I will check the cable continuity but it is a very simple single cable into the Trig and Funke plugs.

Flew yesterday and adsb exchange tags the flight as sourced from adsb data but nothing shown on vector.  After flight spoke to Pete Pengilly about the issue and he is going to put his test set on it next time he is at our base.

Thanks for all the help
John

Hello Peter,

thanks  for looking at this for me.  I flew on 24 Feb and 3 and 15 Mar but none of those flights show on Vector.  My RV-8 is based at RAF Benson.

I have Rosetta installed behind the panel fed by external ADSB(in) and PAW antennas on the foredeck next to the FLARM antenna for the PowerFLARM.  PowerFLARM feeds the Rosetta which provides wifi position and traffic data to an ipad nav display with Skydemon.

I have a FUNKE TRT800H Mode S transponder with a standard TED antenna centrally mounted under the fuselage.  It is fed with GPS by a TRIG TN72 Source.  Approved for adsb SIL=1, I checked the transponder set up about a month ago and it was displaying a GPS feed with a correct location and SIL=1.

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Thanks Both.  The other aircraft was G-RVTX (40720B) with Skyecho and lots of Uavionix kit but only displaying adsb to the pilot.  As mine has shown up as working I won't take the aircraft apart to fix it!  Not sure about the lack of Vector data though.   Thanks again for the help.

Technical Support / adsb (out) not showing on Vector
« on: February 20, 2024, 12:19:30 pm »
I noticed that although Vector showed my PAW and Flarm transmissions, ADSB(out) through my transponder was blank.  Ground testing showed the correct Octal code, registration and GPS data.
To check, I flew on 15 Feb with another aircraft that has ADSB(in and out) only and it could see me throughout.  Have I made some wrong selection in Vector that could cause this?

Technical Support / Re: PilotAware seems to not be transmitting

Brilliantly helpful Steve - it saved me taking the panel apart.  Logged on to the device and found that the ICAO code had changed to something completely different so I reset it and expect it to show up on Vector next trip.

I have not accessed this page since the last software update so it is possible it has been like this since then.  My system is integrated with PowerFLARM and ADS-B using Rosetta as a hub to pass data to SD on ipad.  Tracks have been displayed to me as normal and I guess that with the wrong ICAO code I have been displaying to others but with the wrong ID.  Our local ground station displays my aircraft but that is probably from my ADS-B(out) signal.  Thanks again... John

Technical Support / PilotAware seems to not be transmitting
« on: January 11, 2024, 12:33:06 pm »
Vector seems to show that for my last 2 flights my PilotAware was not transmitting.  Recently completed the Annual but Rosetta and power supplies not disturbed.  I have checked the cabling to the external antenna and the plugs without undoing.  Screenshots taken yesterday attached.  Reception and trafffic displays and callouts normal.

Any advice on the fault finding sequence I should follow please?

Technical Support / Re: Rosetta wifi failed in cruise

Top customer service from PilotAware again-

Spoke to Ashley on the phone who was able to tell me it was the whole Rosetta device which had stopped working (and even what time and where the aircraft was!).  He said it was most likely a power supply problem but as the other devices supplied by the same USB Hub were still working he offered that I could send my device for test and repair.  But when I removed the Rosetta from behind the panel I found a kink in the power cable and when tested on the bench, wiggling the kink made the power cut off!  Problem found.

So it was my faulty USB cable which although sturdy was not the cable supplied with by PilotAware because I needed a shorter one to avoid a flight control interference issue.  Ashley tells me that the better cables they supply are available in different lengths from JuiceEBitz here.

Technical Support / Rosetta wifi failed in cruise
« on: July 26, 2021, 07:00:28 pm »
Having operated faultlessly since installation in RV-8, today after 30 minutes in the cruise, the wifi stopped working (to 2 ipads with SKD).  Checked with settings and no wifi detected.  After an hour on the ground at destination, powered up Anker USB supply and Rosetta wifi opened on both ipads for about a minute and then failed for the rest of the flight and after landing.  No wifi detected again.

Any suggestions for isolating the fault please?

Technical Support / Re: Vector shows PAW but not ADS-B signals
« on: June 04, 2021, 11:26:30 am »
Hello Peter,

The FLARM firmware is current and the LX ground test showed it was transmitting FLARM signals of at least sufficient strength for a bench test.  The HEX ID checked as correct.

I tried to test the FLARM using K Trax (see attached) but although their website talks all about FLARM, their data appears to come from the OGN so suspect that plot may be produced from PAW or ADSB data.

Next plan is to put the FLARM in the aircraft, deselect the ADSB(out) and turn off the USB power to disable integrated PAW and try again.  I will also try replacing the antenna cables and maybe try fitting an antenna direct to the PFLARM unit.

Vector does give us a window on what is really going on in our conspicuity effectiveness!  Just been comparing installed coverage to some new carry-on devices in our club aircraft and the differences are significant,  VMT

I have a slightly different issue and request please:

RV-8 (G-RUVE 405F9B) with PAW,  ADSB(out) via FUNKE txpdr,  PowerFLARM Portable with all incoming tracks concentrated by PAW and displayed via wifi to SKD.  All tx & rx via external mounted antennae.

Checked radiation patterns using the impressive Vector tool which shows good cover for PAW and ADSB but zilch for FLARM.
The internal IGC tool records a polar diagram of received FLARM traffic via the FLARM SD card but it does not measure tx.
PowerFLARM unit was removed and tested by LX which confirmed tx operating but signal strength not measured.  Either I put it back in the aircraft or send it to Switzerland for investigation.
Question - does the lack of FLARM data on Vector give a reasonable assurance that there is indeed a fault in my FLARM device tx?

Technical Support / Re: Multiple audio warnings of traffic
« on: August 14, 2020, 06:33:41 pm »
That is really great info Peter.  My understanding now is that PAW integrates the PAW and ADSB tracks with the FLARM and ADSB tracks sent to it by PF.  I think that is what I see on the traffic page although I do not know how it does that or how it handles 2 sources of ADSB.  Far too clever for me!

But if that traffic data is passed to SD where it is displayed (not hugely attention getting because I am looking outside) and announced (which is attention getting) then I am delighted.  As to bearingless Mode ACS traffic, the head up display on PF fitted on my coaming provides a range ring for the nearest track and that is in my sightline.

Thanks a lot....

Having absorbed your advice Peter, and re-read the SKD manual and forum it would appear that as PAW sends its traffic data via WiFi to SKD where audio and visual warnings are generated, I should be able to turn off the PAW audio without loss of capability.  Of course that depends on the PAW and SKD algorithms.

For my installation it also depends on how the PF traffic data that comes in to PAW via USB is treated.  Is it managed just like any other PAW track and sent to SKD via WiFi as just another track?  If so I may be able to turn off the PF audio, subject to a check that its own warning algorithm does not include some critical feature (which for gliders FLARM does).

A while ago Keith described the full suite of EC devices as "the gold standard" but I think that accolade may come with a sensor fusion hub that integrates all the systems and I envisaged PAW is that hub.  When I was involved with Typhoon development, sensor fusion was the emerging key technology and the displays were able to present a single "air picture" but with icon shapes that told you where the data came from (on-board, off-board etc).  And of course being bred in Lancashire we asked for the standard audio warning to be "ay oop, ay oop but that did not survive to production!

Do you know how I can bottom out the way that track data is managed thought the systems?

Technical Support / Multiple audio warnings of traffic
« on: August 11, 2020, 05:14:06 pm »
Have integrated PowerFLARM data (via USB cable) into PilotAware for display on Skydemon (iPad) via WiFi and have PF, PAW and SKD audio connected directly to my intercom system.  On most occasions this is magic with really accurate traffic calls on gliders and other traffic/airspace.  But recently departing Turweston which was quite busy with traffic, the audio systems seemed to be competing with each other on calling traffic (some seeming duplicate) resulting in bedlam in the headphones.

Originally I had set up the audio systems as auxiliary audio inputs to the VHF COM which are muted when receiving is in process but ATC chatter was blocking traffic information.  So I changed the configuration to remove the muting function but now have bedlam.

Can anyone explain the distribution of traffic source warnings in this case from merged PF, PAW and SKD audio so I can try to find a way to calm the ears?

Technical Support / Aircraft tracks not showing on Skydemon
« on: June 24, 2020, 03:42:23 pm »
Hi Folks,

flight testing my RV with PAW, ADSB Mode S and FLARM integrated. My aircraft mounted iPad with Skydemon connects to PAW when I hit Go Flying and I can hear the PAW audio messages through the intercom.  But I don't see any other aircraft tracks on the Skydemon display.  I checked through the list on the website for integrating PAW and SKD and set up seems to be as required.

Any advice on fault finding please?

John
