Technical Support / Re: GPS Lock being Lost due to Radio TX

I still get GPS drop out but usual just Edinburgh approach on 121.205.  I moved the paw as far back as I could but not many options in an open cockpit gyro so just live with it now.

Our KX-155 comm interferes with GPS in our RV-6. When transmitting on frequencies near 121.175 MHz, which has its 13th harmonic pretty much on the main GPS satellite carrier frequency, it takes out satellite reception both in the panel mount GX60 and the GPS 496 handheld. The effect is not subtle.

Ill try a quick TX on that freq to see if the effect is any more pronounced.

Hi Lee - Its the recommended Anker battery pack - think we have spoken about this before via Facebook after the last PAW was ran over ;) (just checked, looks like it was Ash)

Nothing else is being ran of the pack as last time I had a 0x500 error I started to suspect charging a very flat Ipad as the same time was too much for it.

Good to know there may actually be some science behind the issues we have as it was not making a lot of sense.

I will double check cables but its open cockpit and exceptionally hard to work in the nose cone where the aerial is.  It is at least a pretty short run but if anything its more than likely to be the ground plane which is effectively a small metal plate and some metallic tape.

(Its a banner pop up on Sky Demon that disapears as soon as I stop transmitting, sitting on the ground in the hanger I could see it drop several satellites on the PAW config screen)

I have suspicions around this being a factor but when it happened last time it was about 0.2 MHz difference to my local field  (121.2 vs 121.080)

Having simmilar noise issues ourselves, although it seems random and not always when the IPAD is charging from the aircraft (eg even when connected to USB pack)

Currently trying a cheap Bluetooth dongle so the intercom is connected to that and there is an air gap between ipad and Bluetooth dongle - job done! :D

Technical Support / GPS Lock being Lost due to Radio TX
« on: March 17, 2019, 08:16:42 pm »
Since upgrading our classic to a Rosetta we have found it prone to losing GPS lock mid flight despite the improved chip, but have linked this to being at the same time as transmitting on the radio.  We have moved the location of the PAW unit as much as possible away from the radio aerial (limited as open cockpit) which has improved things substantially, but still get occasional drop out when transmitting.

Just wondering if anyone else had experience anything simmilar?

Also if using a USB Extension lead would have an adverse impact if we stuck the GPS 2m away on the end of a cable.

Interesting one this comparing SD to PAW - I really want to get the Mode S stuff but having audio form the IPad instead is better overall for me esp now it does the verbal warnings (not to mention Spotify ;) )

I just added Bluetooth to our set up so maybe if PAW can do BT output in the future as well there may be some way to get the best of both! :D

Technical Support / Re: FUNKE Transponder FW Version

Well that completely failed.

Set up with NMEA etc but no ADSB traffic from myself was seen on either the PAW traffic screen of my own device or the ADSB view on other devices nearby :(

Anyone looking for a FUNKE cradle and 232USB patch lead let me know!

Have tried and failed so far but now at least have the right manual for the older FW

It states the following GPS can be selected on the Transponder - any ideas what I should pick? (leaning towards NMEA)

GPS-Receiver for ADS-B out
o FREEFLIGHT (GPS / WAAS Sensor 1201, 19200 Bd)
setting of the GPS receiver: not required.
o NexNav NNL 3101
setting of the GPS receiver: not required
o KLN94 (Bendix King, KLN 89B, KLN 94, KMD 150, 9600 Bd)
setting of KLN89B/KLN94: “Standard RS232 Sentence”
setting of KMD 150: “Type 1 Sentence”
o NMEA-Format (4800 Bd)
setting: data format RMC is expected; to minimize the
amount of data other sub-formats are to be avoided.

No improvement with the Sky Echo device but was seeing plenty ADSB traffic so I think I will blame their device for the lack of visibility.

Will continue to review with him next time Im out

So far so fail...

After transplanting across to a new squirter and wiring it all up... I cant even get the Transponder to go into settings menu to set up the cradle so it is mode AC only.  Never even got as far as trying with PAW as need Transponder to work properly first :(

Had to put it all back whilst I await a reply from Funke as to why the instructions dont work on this version (does on another aircraft with newer FW).

If anyone is about to buy the RS232 lead or squirter let me know as likely I will have it sitting in a box :(

Fair point. Will get him to check that.  Was 30 Gwen first trying them but wasn’t working great then either (just between Sky echos)

Worth mentioning on this post the Anker USB pack recomended comes on sale on Amazon from time to time, I picked up the other week closer to £20 instead of £30 it usually is.

Though I do wonder if its overkill as leaving it on most of the day and I still have 60-80% left lol

Yeah good shout, will do a local flight next time without SD and just leave the traffic screen up so I can see what its picking up throughout the flight.  It certainly gets ADSB when testing on the ground from time to time (going by the altitudes of hits, but as you say though SD I have filtered down to +/-2K ft so aircraft when flying could be either).  Its this intermittent aspect that has me wondering if its working consistently in the air so if I have that screen up I should get an idea if its going up and down.

I was actually trying to test the Transponder connection on the old FW version of Transponder after this but it was a non starter as couldn't even get into the settings menu of the transponder to set up the new squitter with our reg.  It just kept warning about no cradle therefore AC mode only :(      FW issue even here as do this on another AC and can get into settings menu without issue.

That's before even trying to get it to work with PAW so at moment it looks like no ADSB out and I have a brand new FUNKE squitter and USB connection lead for sale if anyone on here is needing one...
