Technical Support / Waiting for device

I've been using my trusty Samsung Tab4 SM-T230 running Android 4.4.2 which worked with my PAW faultlessly for several years.
Now I've "upgraded" to a Samsung A7 lite SM-T225 Android 13, I keep getting the "waiting for device message" in Sky Demon, normally after about 20 to 30 mins from start up.
Usually need to turn the tablet wifi off and back on, but once the problem starts, it repeats at random intervals. It's been like this for the past 6-9 months and not changed behaviour even with several recentish PAW firmware updates.

I'm pretty sure its a tablet issue as I've been in P2 seat with P1 running his Apple table, my Samsung flags the message but the Apple functions properly. I've also repeated the test with my phone and tablet connected, tablet flashed the message but phone continues to work fine.

As far as i can tell, bth tablets are configured the same.

Any suggestions?

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN-R max range

I was puzzled by why the max range of the Flarm far exceeded that of the p3i transmissions.
Particularly curious as to why the range heat map was perfectly circular at turweston and crowland for example and also other stations show a circular max.
The differing local topography 'must' give a varying heat map, more like the variation you see on the Flarm plot.

More 'suspicious is that Crowland and Tur max out at exactly the same range of 60.2KM

So, 'I think' that the reporting software blocks or junks any received data that exceeds 60.2 - 60.4km range?
Would be good to see what the p3i is actually reaching. :)

General Discussion / PAW / Flarm / Glider tracker ADSB priority.

Hi,

I've been wondering how PAW prioritises and displays the various protocols?

For example, I have PAW and Flarm installed so that both are shown on screen.
But if the other aircraft is transmitting say ADSB + Flarm, or PAW + glider tracker or any other combination, what is shown on screen?

I ask because while flying yesterday avoiding swarms of gliders, I could see the following registration formats

G-ABCD
43D76C (example).
G-
(maybe others?)

What is displayed for each particular protocol and where an aircraft if transmitting more than one, what does PAW display and does this change when receiving OGN base station info?

OGN-R PilotAware / UP-OGN working superbly

Coming back from oop north, NE of Leicester, the uplink from Hus-Bos shows how good this is even now and how brilliant it will be the more base stations are installed.
I knew there were lots of gliders, I could see quite a few and the continious ATC traffic reports from East Mids, BUT this was a real eye opener.....literally !

I'm working a Up-OGN base station for my home field, today gives more impetus.....more news soon.

General Discussion / Radar3D - New Pilot Aware traffic display.

I am proud to show off the work of my nephew, James Rose, a young and talented student software developer, .

Myself, not being absolutely happy with the way in which current navigation displays show traffic, I wanted something clearer and less cluttered and a separate dedicated traffic display.
Also, I find assimilating the track, relative height and climb / decent information on the "birds eye view" style traffic displays not as intuitive it could be, hence Radar3D was born.

The typical TIS display puts your view directly above your own aircraft.
Radar3D positions your 'view' behind and above your own aircraft so that other aircraft can be show in a perspective view.

Your own aircraft is shown in the centre of the "Radar disc".
The relative height of other aircraft is shown with a vertical "tape measure", stopping at your level, either from above or below.
Track is shown by a direction line attached to the intruder aircraft.
Climb / decent / level flight is presented as a square for level flight, upward or downward triangles show the change the vertical separation of the intruder.

It is quick to distinguish which aircraft is the greatest threat without needing to read individual heights and climb information found on a typical TIS type display.

Photo below is of simultaneous screen grabs from sky demon (which I use and find excellent) and Radar3D showing a direct comparison of Radar3D and other style of display.


Next screen shot shows that the highest risk intruded is the aircraft with no "tape measure"  and is at or close to your level, also on a converging track.

The radar display operates in Track up mode so that all other aircraft positions are shown relative to your own heading.
The display can be configured to suit, being able to set the distance of the range rings and also to ignore aircraft above or below your level by any preferred figure, etc etc.
i.e. you can set the display to show aircraft withing reception range of over 100miles or set to a more local level of 5 miles range and +- 2,000ft for example.
The display will show all traffic received by Pilot Aware and also show mode C and Mode S warning banners.
Radar3D connects to Pilot Aware wirelessly and is intended to be loaded onto a smart phone or tablet (currently android only).

Radar3D is IN BETA TEST. i.e for testing and evaluation.
If you choose to install and use the application, it is on the understanding that it is used entirely at you own risk.
Familiarisation  with the APP is recommended whilst being on the ground and if any airborne tests are to be made, it is advisable to do this whilst only being a passenger. As always, do not allow any device to become a distraction. To reiterate,  it is used entirely at you own risk.

The application if free :thumleft:  to download and to use without any time limitation.

James would be grateful of any suggestions, improvements  and reports of bugs / feedback, and for even the smallest of donations to help with the continuation of development.
More info will be loaded into the Pilot Aware forum Ecosystem.

General Discussion / Another Enclosure

Hello all,

My effort at a all-in-one box while the weather is naff and the scareoplane in in for 50hrs check.
The enclosure is from RS 401-9963 £4.27
I'm lucky to have access to CNC so drilled all the cooling holes, but the same effect could be made with careful use of a hand drill.
Mini 5v fan also from RS on the back face.

The audio and power connectors and RF pigtails (all from @bay) were taken out to sockets on the side of the case as well as the ADSB and P3i SMA bulk-head connectors.

I used the Pilot Aware GPS mouse and stuck this to the top of the box.
in order to do this it needed a bit of brain surgery. The mouse case was opened up, cable "hacked" to length and soldered back onto the mouse PCB. I guess it would be easier to cut and re splice the USB cable  or fit a re-wireable USB plug. But while i was inside the mouses brain, i noticed it has a nice bright green LED that blinks when GPS locked. So drilled a hole in the top of the mouses 'scull' and added a clear plastic plug so that Mr blinkie led can be seen and thus the status of GPS lock.

Pot wired in series to the audio (think it was about 100 ohms?) to provide front panel volume control. It's a bit sensitive so might need to experiment with lower resistance.

Just need an aeroplane and weather to give it a flight test.

General Discussion / My Pilot Aware arrived today

On the day promised, at 10:30AM, it is in my hands.
5 Minutes later, plugged in and configured with the licence key, everything up an running.
To call it a "'kit" is an injustice, this is a ready to go, finished product.

An absolute massive achievement by the PA team and long may it continue.
May the GA masses follow us.
