Saying goodbye to my classic unit as got Rosetta now as a gift.

I have done my best to upgrade the device for a more user friendly installation in the cockpit with antennas and GPS on extension cables with suction cups. NooElec SDR and 1090 antenna replaced the original ones. iGrid enabled and dongle included. Licence till feb 2024.

Will post on ebay shortly with lots of pictures and further details. Meanwhile feel free to ask any questions.

Technical Support / CAP1391 shows as bearingless in SkyDemon via PAW
« on: April 20, 2023, 10:34:47 pm »
Hi all,

Recently was trying to watch some aircraft through PAW while on the ground and noticed a strange thing - couple aircraft that I know for sure had an ADS-B out CAP1391 devices on (and no Mode S transponder as one was actually parked) were showing up as bearingless. What could be the reason for it? I believe they were showing normal after take off…

Hello:-)

I have been using my classic with iGrid for some time (ie I had a second wifi dongle), but as recently I started having issues and wifi not connecting (not even showing) sometimes I ended up ordering two new wifi dongles to replace my existing ones.

It seems, however, that they only work for igrid for me (i.e. if I plug one old one and one new one). So, I can’t make the new wifi dongle start showing up as wifi network (weather I plug just one or two).

Is that expected behaviour or is there something I can do to make new dongles work for WiFi connection of my EFB as well as for iGrid.

Old dongles still  somewhat work, but just not super reliable, hence I wanted to try the new ones.

Kind regards,
Alex

Technical Support / Dipole Antenna Fell off - options forward?
« on: June 22, 2022, 03:09:13 pm »
Hi everyone!

I was thinking literally a few weeks back if one can actually ensure somehow if the internal remote antenna is fine as I noticed both wiggling a bit and jokes on me - today 869 dipole completely fell off the cable after a few years of good service.

Either way, I found 2m cables a bit too much and was thinking to explore ways of having remote antennas yet on shorter cables. So, I thought of buying short 50cm SMA extension cables on amazon + standard antennas from pilotaware store. With that two main questions:

1) Do those standards antennas perform much worse or not really if placed correctly?
2)  Is there some important physics I’m missing re extension cable length etc or any coaxial cable will  do and I should just go ahead?

Technical Support / Adding USB switch
« on: June 08, 2022, 03:04:41 pm »
Hi,

I know that power supply quality and cables is very important, so any tweaks need to be made very carefully, but may be somebody had luck using a USB switch, so that PAW could be easily switched on and off? If so, are there any recommendations/links to amazon you could share?

Thanks!
Alex

Technical Support / IGRID vs Mode S 3D
« on: June 05, 2022, 02:27:50 pm »
Hi,

i have been looking through the knowledge base and was not able to find an answer unfortunately for the following questions:

1) say I use iGrid, but have Mode S3D disabled… what happens then to the MLAT aircraft that are detected by iGrid, but not by my onboard PAW? What about MLAT aircraft that detected by iGrid, but also by my onboard PAW as bearingless?

2) same as above, but I have Mode S3D enabled.. do I get it right that the system will try to plot the most accurate one?

3) last, but not least: does anybody know if SkyDemon draws circles of ambiguity for ModeS3D or it just plots an MLAT aircraft in the same way as any other?

Many thanks for any help or hints:)

Hi,

It is commonly known that normal transponders transmit their BARO altitude on 1013 and then ATC does all the necessary conversion. Question - when PAW transmits it's position and altitude does it also do it based on 1013 BARO? Or does it transmit the actual altitude estimated by the device? The reason why I am asking as I flew on a 1022 QNH day and a colleague of mine was watching me on a plane tracking app. To our surprise the altitude we saw was spot on, which made me think PAW transmitted "correct altitude" and not on 1013. Is that right?

Technical Support / Setting date and time and reading logs
« on: April 15, 2021, 12:52:56 pm »
Hi,

I would like to take a PAW track and compare it accuracy against another device I have. I think I figured out how to read the logs, but got a few questions:

- There is AMSL altitude in the log, but how is it derived if local pressure on the day is never input? Or is there some smart GPS algorithm that does it?
- The date and time I see in the home page is very wrong - how can I set it and make sure it is correct to a second?

Thank you!

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN History data
« on: August 02, 2019, 11:51:00 am »
Hello,

Could anyone help please if it might be possible to get history data from OGN? I understand that the policy of OGN stations theme-selves is to store it for 24h, however isn't it feeding into FR24 in which it might be possible to see it? Or any other way to see FLARM equipped aircraft in the past?

Any help hugely appreciated.

Kind regards,
Alex

Dear Fellow-Pilots,

Thank you very much to everybody who earlier helped with my research survey on flight-sharing. Now as promised I am coming back with the findings. The work included a lot more than just the survey (including, but not limited to CAA interview) and resulted in a 200-page document and 45,000+ words. The idea of the research was to do with the strong division of opinions on flight-sharing and what could be done to change that. As a possible solution, buddy-flying flight-sharing was considered.

Fortunately and unfortunately, there is a big chunk of work which I cannot share for various reasons (e.g. limitations on data sharing), whereas some bits are simply not very relevant and interesting for aviators. So, I have spent quite a bit of time creating a much shorter version specifically to share with pilots. Due to the cut-downs, it is still far from perfect in terms of structure, formatting and flow, as otherwise, it would take forever… So it is not a paper, but rather a document with a bunch of findings, however, I hope it communicates the main aspects well.

It is still a fairly long file, which nobody will probably read in full, so contents will hopefully help direct you to the key areas of interest. Ultra-short summary of key findings which I personally find important is below:

- Many pilots like the idea of flight-sharing, but even among interested, very few do it. (pp. 14-16 )
- Less experienced pilots and renters are most positive about the idea of flight-sharing. (pp. 13-14)
- Reviews mechanisms on flight-sharing platforms are not very useful. (pp. 6-7)
- Wingly is far from being profitable and good chance it won’t be for a long time. (pp. 30-32 )
- Some practices of flight-sharing platforms that might seem in the grey area, mostly not perceived as such by regulators, however, some cancellation policies do raise questions (pp. 10-11; pp. 24-26, p. 36 )
- Company and sharing passion appears as important as sharing the costs with the former even leading by a few per cent. (p.16)
- Pilots flight-sharing with other pilots could be better than flight-sharing with passengers, due to not dealing with complete strangers and flying last minute being common among pilots. (p.21; p. 23)
- I also managed to approach an existing platform and launch functionality with them that facilitates finding flying-buddies for pilots among members of same flying clubs (pp. 77-79) + demo video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO3zOfuyNuE&t=5s.

If there are any specific questions, I might be able to answer so please let me know. Thank you very much once again! I really enjoyed working on this project and hopefully, some of you will find it interesting.

Kind regards,
Alex

Technical Support / Ghosting again?
« on: July 16, 2018, 05:50:57 pm »
Hello :) I flew yesterday and experienced something that seems like ghosting - aircraft was shown as red circle in skydemon so mode C/S and also read out to me by an audio alert. It was 2000 feet above and for about 1 minute kept descending to about 1300 feet above with red circle still showing, so I even asked if the aircraft was on frequency. I am not sure now, but I think it showed registration as GECOT. I was flying level at 1300 QNH.

If somebody could help please - the track is attached and the traffic was shown somewhere between 16:40 zulu and 16:50 zulu. The most concerning part for me is probably that I have just replayed the whole track over again using skydemon and that traffic was not shown, so something isn't right.

Dear Fellow Pilots,

Having recognised the disputes that often arise around cost-sharing, I decided to research that topic as part of my masters degree thesis. That would be extremely helpful and just take 6-8 minutes to fill in an anonymous survey with multiple choice questions. It is designed for both pilots and student-pilots. Opinions from commercial pilots are also very welcome, though it is desirable that you fly GA sometimes.

Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions and thank you very much for taking time to read my post.

The survey could be accessed through the following link: https://warwickwmg.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_85GnjI1uQVMf1OJ

Kind regards,
Alex

Technical Support / HEX Code
« on: June 03, 2018, 01:15:41 am »
Hi! Quick question re HEX code - I normally flew aircraft with one and always updated it in config settings of PAW original, however the aircraft I am flying next does not have a HEX code as per GINFO.

Question, what does that mean? Technically I do not really understand all nuances

More importantly - what do I set my HEX code to when fly aircraft without one? It doesn't let me keep the value empty and keep returning to previous aircraft, however if I leave it like that it means I will not see that very previous aircraft, right ?

Technical Support / Traffic not shown
« on: May 04, 2018, 09:20:17 pm »
Hello :-) I recently was departing with PAW onboard and couldn't see some traffic on SkyDemon.

GBWNB was in front of me for power checks but not shown on SkyDemon or red out in audio- that was confirmed when I played back the track at home. However, that plane could be viewed on FligtRadar24 with contact on May 03 at 0920 UTC. I was in GWARU and Flightradar shows contact at 0923 UTC so pretty sure I got the other aircraft right.

See installation of my antennas on photo below which I think is as good as it can get without permanent installation. So basically now I have few options what happened:

1) Not all traffic shown on flightradar is seen by PAW, but I always thought that is not the case
2) Some PAW fault
3) GBWNB forgot to put transponder on and only did it later in flight
4) Something else

Would appreciate any help/advice
