Technical Support / Aircraft Profiles
« on: August 01, 2022, 11:08:07 pm »
This may be one for Lee ...

I fly a fair number of different aircraft with a carry on PAW

All's fine in general, but (and as it's nearly license renewal time ...) the license key seems to be stored in the profile for each aircraft (as do the router settings too....

When I update the license key (and save) it's only stored for the aircraft that was in use ... switching profiles requires the key to be updated (and saved again).

Not really a problem for a couple of profiles, but I have around 30 setup .... (I've gradually updated them for the current key once I worked out what was going on, but like I mentioned, its renewal time shortly ...)

Would it be possible to have the license key applied to all profiles when it's updated - no idea on whats required for this (and possibly the iGrid router settings too)

Apologies if this has been mentioned before and is WIP ...

Cheers

Technical Support / Audio over HDMI
« on: June 15, 2022, 02:57:27 pm »
Quick one...

(and long time no posts, but been reading frequently ...)

Is (or can it be) the audio output enabled over the HDMI socket ..

Just looking at possible ways of getting a cleaner output from the PAW unit - its quite noisy using the 3.5mm jack

Thanks

PS - great work on the iGrid stuff - its working like a charm ...

Technical Support / IOS 12 and Skydemon - on the laggy side ...
« on: September 23, 2018, 10:35:21 am »
Morning all..

Just in case you've spotted the lag on SD recently (assuming you've gone to IOS 12) - it's nothing to do with PAW (I had this yesterday, first flight with IOS 12, wasn't sure what was causing it)

Keeping an eye on this thread to see what comes of it

Technical Support / Using 2 SDR's - Weather ...
« on: August 19, 2018, 10:18:06 am »
Quick one ..

When using 2 SDR's to get 978 Weather broadcasts, do they NEED to be the same, or can different makes / models be used ..?

Individually, each of the ADSB dongles I have work fine with my setup (Pi3, 20180520 Software) - they are

The 'stock' one that comes with PAW
A Nooelec Nano 3
A RTL Low Power V2 SDR

Mixing them up seems to make one drop off line - sometimes the first one (ie, the one used for ADSB), sometimes the second one (the weather one). Which ever one is left seems to then revert to ADSB duties - I've had the 'second' weather one picking up ADSB signals with the tuned 978 Antenna when the 'first'  one dropped offline...

I've moved them around to different USB ports with no change (power cycles etc whilst swapping / moving around)

The only config I've NOT tried yet is two of the same type (I didn't take the second Low Power RTL Dongle with me unfortunately!!)

Just thought I'd check so I can diagnose further before heading down south in a week or so's time for a job  (where I'll see how the weather stuff works)

Apologies if this has been answered and I've missed something ...

Technical Support / USB ports
« on: August 11, 2018, 03:25:29 pm »
Afternoon all

Aside from the physical side of things and what fits next to what, is there any reason why certain devices need to be in certain USB ports (On a Pi3, but the Q still stands for a Pi2) , or can anything go in any port (pretty sure it's going to be a yes, but checking first to save headaches later...)

I'm talking about the standard devices here (GPS, ADSB dongle etc) so no setting will have been changed with regard to the ports settings

My Stratux Low power dongles have finally arrived and I'll be playing around later (Interestingly, both the standard ADSB dongle and my NooElec Nano 3 both show as a Pilotaware device whilst the Stratux ones are labelled as "Stratux LowPowerV2" on the main settings page)

I've a spare antenna tuned to the weather frequency that came with the Nano3 so I'll be using that instead of a splitter

Tks

Technical Support / Profile snag - SSID Changes
« on: July 16, 2018, 02:02:19 pm »
Hi

Little snag spotted - not sure if it's by design or not so I thought I'd mention it..

The upgrade to the Pi3 has meant re-setting up the Aircraft profiles for the machines I fly …

I've changed the SSID of the PAW to something a little more suitable, and it's fine on the profile I've created for the first machine

When creating a profile for a second machine, the SSID reverts to the 'stock' one (ie, the one containing the MAC address) and the PAW then won't connect when that profile is selected until the Wifi is reconnected manually to the 'new' wifi hotspot

Updating the SSID in the second profile so it's the same as the first seems to cure this and you can switch between profiles normally … (ie, without having to reconnect to a different hotspot)

Apologies if this has been mentioned before ….

Cheers

General Discussion / All ticking along nicely
« on: July 09, 2018, 12:01:17 pm »
Morning all

Just following on …

Things are all ticking along nicely with the Classic … I'll start using is for Nav as well as traffic on the next flights as it seems to be rock solid since the Pi swap and upgrade to the latest software. Currently still using an ipad mini for the Radar Display (with audio alerts via a bluetoothed set of earbuds) and SD with a Bad Elf for Nav..

Performance is the same with the Power Companion OR the Anker Powerdrive 5 (this is becoming the preferred power option for me, at least in the Longranger as PAW boots when I bring the radio master online, and the tablets automatically reconnect to it once booted .. The Bluetooth transmitter seems to power up too when left plugged in and power applied!!)

I've just picked up a Pi3B too - software download to the Micro SD card and running so I'll swap that into the 'enclosed' test unit with a classic bridge and see how the performance improves / changes before changing the 'live' unit

Screen shot attached from the trip back from Rochester yesterday showing things working nicely between Stapleford, Stanstead and Luton

Cheers

OGN-R PilotAware / OGN Station naming
« on: July 09, 2018, 11:48:52 am »
Morning all..

Just a quick one ..

All of the OGN stations I'm seeing whilst flying are pretty much named OGN-1 - is this normal, or can/should the name be changed (by the site owners) to reflect the location ..?

Just curious..

Thanks

General Discussion / Your own HEX ID / Registration
« on: June 15, 2018, 10:36:34 am »
Morning all

Quick Q - think I know the answer but checking...

On the PAW we input our aircraft HEX ID and Reg so that you don't flag up on (for example) Skydemon as a contact - different profiles allow for the PAW to be moved between different aircraft - all good with this and it works as it should.

Question is - is it the HEX ID or the Reg that's used to 'remove' yourself - only asking as next weeks jobs require the callsign to be changed in the transponder to match the actual one in use (obviously the HEX ID will remain the same) - does the PAW need to be updated with the call sign change too .?

Thanks

Technical Support / Odd connectivity problem ...
« on: April 26, 2018, 03:52:54 pm »
Afternoon ..

Odd one for you to ponder over ..

I’m out in the field at the moment, using SkyDemon on an iPad with an external Bad Elf for nav duties, with PAW running via my second iPad for radar screen use ..

All working with PAW radar wise as you’d expect .. it’s stayed connected for the last 7 odd hours and running well.

However, if I try to connect SkyDemon up to it on the same iPad mini , SD throws GPS signal lost messages up on the screen (with 7 found in the bottom of the banners and doesn’t work .

SD on the iPad mini work fine with location services and another external Bad Elf....

I also tried connecting up the main iPad, and a third backup, all with the same results.

The info screen shows all the greens for adsb, gps, clients etc ...

Switching back to the browser based radar screen shows traffic as expected, as doe the traffic page !!

I’ll post pics when back at base...

Any ideas ..?  Connectivity is normally by PilotAware, but I did try the Flarm settings with no joy ...

General Discussion / Seperate Bridge Purchase
« on: February 19, 2018, 07:06:42 pm »
Evening ..

Quick Q for Lee I'd imagine ...

Does the separate bridge (http://pilotawarehardware.com/product/pilotawarebridge/) come with the Antenna - pretty sure it doesn't but want to confirm before pulling the plug on the purchase (for the test setup)

Thanks

Technical Support / Odd ADSB USB problem
« on: January 03, 2018, 04:51:50 pm »
Afternoon all ..

Can anyone shed any light on this for me ..?

More of the kit has arrived today for my all-in-one case ...

I've set about connecting things up to test for fit and positioning and have come across the following ..

With the ADSB dongle hooked up to the correct port on the Pi with the supplied whip antenna, all is fine (shows as connected on the home screen, GREEN and receiving messages and updating skydemon correctly with traffic. - All is good

With the ADSB dongle hooked up to the correct port on the Pi with the Nooelec 1090 Mhz antenna connected via a short pigtail, all is fine (shows as connected on the home screen, GREEN and receiving messages and updating skydemon correctly with traffic. - All is still  good

As soon as I put the ADSB dongle , (with a pigtail and NooElec 1090 MHz antenna this time) on a short (approx. 4 inch) USB extension, ADSB drops out - the home screen shows the dongle is connected, but RED with no messages.

If I replace the NooElec antenna with the whip antenna (still with the ADSB dongle connected via the USB extension) it springs back to life

I have tried this with  several different  SMA MCX pigtails (several came with the NooElec antenna, plus some others I had) - no difference made

I've tested the USB extension on a couple of PC's - accessing USB memory sticks etc etc and all is fine there ....

Have to admit to being slightly baffled .. (the short USB extension is a left angled one so that I can move the ADSB dongle to a move suitable location in the case ....)

Thanks in advance

Technical Support / GPIO Ports - which ones are used
« on: December 22, 2017, 02:14:23 pm »
Hi again ...

As I've mentioned on one of my previous posts, I'm incorporating my PAW and power brick into a single 'carry-on' style enclosure.

Most of the bits are either here or on the way (Christmas post means I probably wont get this finished til the new year)  - all I'm doing is fitting everything neatly into a 190 x 140 x 30 Hammond instrument enclosure, using shorter cables where necessary for the power supply etc, shortening the lead from the GPS Mouse so it'll sit on top of the case and eternally mounting the antennas (ADSB one replaced with the NooElec one) and extending the cables with short RG316 pigtails in the enclosure.

This got me thinking about a power switch for the PAW - more searching led me to a post detailing that the software is in Read Only mode for most of the time (so the whole shutting down the Pi correctly isn't an issue) so I figured I could just keep the USB sockets on the power brick visible / available through a suitable hole in the case and just connect the PAW power by plugging in .. V1 of the case is being put together like this - the added benefit being that I can use the second USB port on the power brick to charge / power something else if I get caught short.

I'll post pics when I've got most of the rest of the parts here ...

The real Q on this post is about this MODMYPI LTD MMP-0045 UPS PIco I2C Control, Power Supply HAT for Raspberry Pi from here https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/power-management-development-kits/1270208/?cm_mmc=UK-PPC-DS3A-_-google-_-DSA_UK_EN_Semiconductors-_-Power+Management+Development+Kits-_-DYNAMIC+SEARCH+ADS&matchtype=b&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9_LRBRDZARIsAAcLXje8zFQy8kxZTGOVj5pAo5iWmeFNUbPVB9-SNTdaEzNdeR45_9zy_9kaAkb7EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I stumbled across this whilst looking for power switch solutions and it seemed like a handy addon, especially as further reading of the specs details the fact that larger capacity batteries can be added (up to 8000mah) which should power the PAW for a considerable amount of time.

So the question is - which GPIO ports does the radio bridge use .? I'd like to check to make sure theres no conflict with the Pico board. (It's stackable and will fit in the case I'm using ...)

And from the other side, I've enquired via the ModMyPi forum what features are available at the hardware only level , just in case there are any issues installing the required software and messing up the PAW install ... There's not a great deal to add though ...

Thanks in advance

PS - I've been in the IT game for the thick end of 30 years now and am more than happy at the command line, though this is my first Pi - I kind of didn't bother with them when they first came out ...

Just a thought as it seems like a neat solution

Technical Support / SSH access
« on: December 22, 2017, 01:57:48 pm »
Hi all ..

I've done a quick search and came across an older posting regarding SSH access being blocked / disabled

Can someone confirm if this is the case (I've tried and am unable to get to the PAW using Putty ...) before I dig out a HDMI to DVI converter from somewhere ...

Thanks

General Discussion / New member with a case / ADSB antenna Q
« on: December 15, 2017, 03:15:42 pm »
Hi all ...

New to the forum, and to Pilotaware, but steadily getting to grips with things....

I've been reading up on the replacement case options and will be going wih the popular Stratux case to replace the stock one that came with my Pilotaware setup.
(my temporary setup is cable tied to the back of a RAM ipad mount, and there's cabling for the ADSB antenna tucked up there too that I'd like to get rid of, and also keep the antenna's fixed to just one 'box' to keep things tidy and portable)

I'd also like to use a better ADSB antenna, and am just checking that this one from Amazon will do the job instead of the spindly one supplied with the mag mount and 1m cable ...? https://www.amazon.co.uk/NooElec-ADS-B-Discovery-Antenna-Bundle/dp/B01FS0GI0W/ref=pd_sbs_107_8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3ZA43717F6K6HV976J23

I understand that I'll only need the 1090 Mhz one and can throw the other one ....

Can anyone point me in the direction of a right-angle adapter to connect the pigtail upto the ADSB dongle when it's installed in the Stratux case ..?

So far , with the stock setup it's all working as expected, with traffic plotted nicely on SkyDemon ....

Thanks in advance
Sean
