General Discussion / METARS download facility
« on: September 25, 2020, 01:57:07 pm »
Just upgraded to the new release very smoothly (via the updater app -  nice option) and looking forward to seeing the the METARS uploads when near an ATOM station. My probably dumb question is can the METARS be passed to the EFB apps or is it only available in the PAW METARS table?

Many thanks.

Technical Support / Ipad losing connection to PAW
« on: May 10, 2017, 12:47:08 pm »
I am not sure if anyone else has experienced this. I am running the latest PAW and SAD on an Ipad mini 4. After a random time SD reports is has lost connection and hence position. Initially I thought this was a power issue as I was using the recommended cig socket charger and wondered if it worked loose. However I had the same with a suitable power bank.

SD worked find with no problems when using Location Services. The PAW appears to keep working fine based upon audio alerts. I am wondering if it is something to do with the Wifi conection?

Any thoughts,clues, etc very welcome.

PS Well done to the team on the OGN tie up. Saw some of this as I headed north at the weekend.

Hi, trying to upgrade. I can access the PAW from the ipad (192.168.1.1) when ethernet cable from router NOT plugged in. But when I plug the ethernet cable in BEFORE powering up, I can get safari to show the PAW screens to do the update, it hangs.

Any clues as to what I am doing wrong? New bridge version with Pi2 and version 20160820

General Discussion / Flight today - PAW and TCAS
« on: July 26, 2016, 06:02:50 pm »
We did a flight from Farnborough way to west side of Stansted and back today. I was using the newly upgraded PAW with Pi2 and latest software and the aircraft had it's own TCAS (Bendix King I think).  PAW did give a good warning of a same level head on traffic before TCAS gave a TA. However there was lots of traffic TCAS advised of which PAW was unaware of. I assume this must have been Mode C and despite it being a good day for viz, it was hard to spot the lower level traffic.  As usual, lots of ADSB CAT traffic was visible.

I guess PAW was useful but nowhere near as useful as it would be if it gave mode C alerts. Any timesacles when this faeture will be available?

General Discussion / Latest version - ADSB labels
« on: October 22, 2015, 02:33:21 pm »
I have upgraded both my units to the latest version of PAW. One uses collisionaware for fix the other has USB GPS. The USB one is not showing the ident label on ADSB traffic. Is there a setting I need to change or is there some other problem?

If the wx plays ball, is anyone going to the above end of season fly-in? Could be a another test opportunity.

General Discussion / Daft question #5207 - USB GPS
« on: October 20, 2015, 12:27:51 pm »
One of the slow boats from China has arrived so have a USB GPS to try. I have used USB port 3 and it seems to give a position fix if I use the Flarm nav options in SD.

Daft question - si there a way to set up SD so it uses ipad GPS for its nav and PAW uses USB GPS for its position fix. The reason for this interest is that SD on the ipad keep running even if the PAW unit has problems.

I have also just upgraded to latest release and very early results showing no ADSB traffic. Are there any settings I need to adjust?

Any comments/ answers appreciated.

General Discussion / Airborne testing - mixed results
« on: October 19, 2015, 11:22:29 am »
On Sunday a friend and I tried some ground and airborne tests with mixed results. The recent State of the Nation post makes this less relevant but may be useful and some may have useful observations to make.

The units were in use but only normally two at a time.

Unit A my first effort which is soldered and has no baro
Unit B with Jeremy's ARF shield with baro
Unit C with Jeremy's ARF shield with baro running on Pi B model (A & B on Pi B+)

All three units currently get GPS fix from tablets whilst that slow boar makes its way from China.

Unit A has two GSM style aerials as some have recommended on here. They are close together on one end of the case.

Unit B has the standard aerials the components come with as does unit C.

Experiences
After a quick verification of P3i signals being seen on units A and C we go airborn. Unit C generally saw the P3i traffic info 3-5 miles away and Skydemon gave good interpretation of collision risk when appropriate. i.e. red aircraft graphic and heading line and warning message with range. As you will hear I haven't seen this! but Paul unfortunately couldn't take a screen shot.

Disappointingly, unit A only showed the P3i when flying in very loose formation! something like 100 feet.  I then swapped over to unit B and we achieved pretty much the same results. Paul commented that unit C gave him good warning about a collision and was looking for some time before becoming visual in slightly hazy conditions (we were flying at approx 100 kts with me orbiting). There was some impact on range depending on direction with better range if I was flying toward unit C. Both units were on the coaming with a possibility of blanking by the compass. Unit A & B were in an RV8 and unit C in a  Bulldog.

We went back to using units A and C and repeated the exercises with similar results. After landing we placed unti B and C in the Bulldog and walked away with unit A. Unit A lost unit C again at 100 ft but we got more like 700 ft on unit B. it also seemed that the two GSM like aerials were interacting with one blanking the other if it was in line.

One suspicion was power in the Bulldog but checking the voltage on the GPIO pins it was 4.90 and 3.3 respectively. However this was through a cigarette style adapter running a tablet and the PAW although it says it can provide 2.1A to both sockets. I would like to try a power pack like is used on units A & B in the future.

We then set up the final test with unit B in the Bulldog and unit A using the taller standard aerial on the P3i part.  We got similar result again.

We got excellent range on ADSB traffic but mixed results on P3i, one aircraft getting a useful warning range but not the other.

For the future we will be adding the onboard GPS and trying a battery pack (we I know works) to eliminate that as a factor. Any other thoughts appreciated.

General Discussion / Error msg SDR-USB: Error, connect ()
« on: October 14, 2015, 07:16:17 pm »
I am getting the above error on my second unit which has Jeremy's ARF shield with baro and SMA connector. Don't believe i got this error on my first unit. I am using the 0926 release. Any clues?

General Discussion / List of device codes?
« on: October 11, 2015, 10:37:05 am »
Now that some of use are flying around testing our devices I was wondering if there was a list of devices and there IACO codes to download so you can see if yuo can see P3i traffic? May be it is case of extracting the infor from the unit trials thread.

General Discussion / Collisionaware on iphone?
« on: September 25, 2015, 03:05:38 pm »
Has anyone tried Collisonaware on an iphone? I cant find a way to hit the update button as I can't hide the keyboard after entering the ICAO code.

General Discussion / Anyone flying Lasham way with a device?
« on: September 24, 2015, 04:50:20 pm »
I am doing extended testing to check various things including battery pack life. The P3i link drops out now and again but if anyone is flying past here with an active Pilot Aware unit I could look out for you and vice versa.

General Discussion / Does ARF module decrease ADSB sensitivity?
« on: September 23, 2015, 06:50:21 pm »
Probably showing my ignorance but here goes. Whilst I was waiting for regulator, etc. I got the unit working without the ARF installed and was happily picking up ADSB traffic as verified on flightradar 24. Built the ARF bit when the components arrived and checked soldering seemed OK with mulitmeter.

Booting unit up and things seemed to be normal but I wasn't seeing traffic so removed ARF from GPIO and traffic started appearing as before.

Added the ARF back again and after a while picked up some traffic which was virtually overhead.

I am running current minus version of the software, original digole set up, all components as specified and have tried with both mains USB power and also Aukey battery pack.

I am running indoors so don't expect massive range but there definitely seems a loss of sensitivity with the ARF running.

Any ideas appreciated.
