Good idea to make a case to take the battery.  Throuble is lots of different battery designs.

Although not photographed here I use the old antenna from the original wireless things card for the ADSB and the dipole for the PAW.  Usually it doens't leave my flight bag on the back shelf of the PS28 but I don't trust the GPS dongle when obscured by cessna wing or PA28 roof so really it needs a nice compact case that can sit on the coaming without sliding around.

About as far as I can take things but really it needs to be produced using Selective Laser Sintering (that will add a lot of cost).  The printed ABS was really disapointing and distortion occured in the corners.  Quite a lot of forces in the ABS printing and you need quite a big bed, ideally in a heated enclosure which is beyond the reach of many lower cost printers.

About time a mass produced case was made available!

Is there particular purpose/benefit to the project or just general interest?

even just an Rx would be good...

What would it do to the cost of PAW if a licensed flarm decode was integrated (perhaps as an optional plugin?) without the need for a FLARM hardware?

General Discussion / auto update problem
« on: August 29, 2016, 04:35:08 pm »
I was on a flight yesterday.  2 pilotawares in the same aircraft.  Units positions in almost the same place on the rear seat and one not getting the same number of Mode C/S contacts. Even off other aircraft in the circuit. I think antenna may of been loose so will want to investigate that further. The really anomaly from the flight was that skydemon kept drawing our aircraft on the ground on my unit when getting position data from pilotaware. I did some tinkering while PAX...restarting PAW, connecting, disconnecting, location services (worked fine) vs flarm. I wish I'd tried restarting my ipad but didn't.  Anyway I plugged in my unit to the ethernet this morning to download the track logs and see if there might be any clues but my unit got corrupted somehow and and wouldn't boot.

Formatted the SD card and installed 20160708 on it (hadn't previously downloaded 20160820....doing that now but its taking forever to download).  Unit boots OK and I'm now connected to the admin page using 192.168.0.100 over the ethernet from by desktop PC.  But now I click on http://192.168.0.100/updates.cgi > Check for updates and the http://192.168.0.100/check.cgi page just hangs on Checking for Updates.  Same think over the wifi from the ipad.

I guess this will depend on your phone but my 4g iPad still has internet access when connected to the PAW wifi hotspot

A slight evolution of the design....

The pi sits on standoffs with small lugs on the to locate the pi board. longer standoffs from the lid trap the pi onto them and the lids is screwed to the base from the below using countersunk m2.5 machine screws.

A couple more small tweaks to make to improve the installation of the pi and allow a usb gps on extension cable out through the case and I'll post the STL files.

There is a disadvantage in having to open the case to access the ethernet or usb ports for software updates (though the sd card can be accessed externally) but for me this outweighs the advantage of having a single robust unit that I can take in and out of different aircraft.

I don't use the GPS dongle but case is large enough for one.  Instead opted to use collisionaware/nmeagps route and so this case stays in my bag. usually behind the p2 seat with the 1090 antenna sticking up vertically and the tuned low profile antenna gets stuck to the rear windows with slot head suction cups acquired here http://www.suctioncupsdirect.co.uk/ .  The only cable to sneak between the seats in the audio lead to plug into my headset.

is the PAW supposed to auto reboot once the update has finished?  Mine didn't and was really unsure how long to leave it before restarting for fear of screwing up the install.

Actually I think it was a power issue.  I just looked at the plug and it only outputs 5v 1a and it was a long cable.  It was fine when I swapped onto a short cable, or swapped the plug.  Just rather stupidly assumed I'd get enough juice out of any usb plug.

Its home built.  But everything was working OK on the B+.  Seems to be working again now.

Well I spoke a bit soon.  Finally got the software to install.  Pi2 is plugged into the mains at the moment and connected to a monitor.  I can  see it boots up to the pi login prompt and I could see and connect to the paw wifi.

As soon as safari connected to 192.168.1.1 the pi rebooted and is now stuck in a loop
