General Discussion / Re: £50 Flarm receiver????
« on: August 07, 2017, 05:40:13 pm »
Hi,

I spent some time to read the referenced sources in this section of their site: Is OpenFLARM compatible with FLARM?

Not sure whether I may post these links here, but it´s clickable in the above section on http://www.openflarm.co.uk/

From what I understand, all information needed to decrypt and interprete the signals (encryption method and keys are in one of the referenced documents) received from FLARM units have already been made public. Furthermore there is argumentation provided why Flarm should not enjoy any copyright protection on this part of their navigation message.

I would image that with a decrypted Flarm message and the interpretation table which Bit contains Lat/Long/Alt/Speed, it should be comparably easy to implement that into PAW since I guess this is pretty much what also an ADSB message contains...

Could anyone with more technical capabilities than me comment on that please? I´d still very much love to "see" Flarms without their ridiculously expensive Flarm mouse...

Thanks

Well since OpenFlarm claims to be open, why not ask them how they decode and interprete genuine Flarm and why they believe it to be legal? I'd do it myself but am afraid that I could not add any value if they respond and provide technical details...

This appears partly redundant to what our beloved PAW does (sending the own position in a "simple" own protocol) - I guess we don´t want/need that especially since it means even more antennas.

Interesting is that they say that it´s legal and possible to receive and interprete genuine FLARM signals (just Rx no Tx). Since this is what probably most of want for FLARM integration into PAW, could somebody check whether this is true from a legal standpoint and if so whether it´s possible to use the same way they do to integrate FLARM reception directly into PAW?

Where in NZ? Oddly I'm sitting in a bar at Auckland Airport. The reach of pilotaware!

About to cross Cook Strait today...

Any thoughts on Flarm? Already asked the question a few month ago but noone really seems to care about their prices or it's just expensive everywhere...

Thanks for the Screenshots!

Am in NZL at the moment and thus 10.000 NM away from our Mooney and PAW. Could someone pls share a few Screenshots/Fotos of the new Radar? Can't wait to see it...

Forthermore: Would now be the time to think about getting the Flarm Mouse? Any suggestions where to buy and not spend a fortune?

Thx!

That would be PERFECT!

And I'll also be an early adopter of FLARM - we have heavy glider activity in the north of our airfield and that is basically where I'm usually coming from... It has been a few times that I saw a piece of plastic with short notice... On a decent with 175kts ground it would be great to know where they are, a bit earlier...

Any chance to get Flarm-mouses cheaper by ordering a bigger quantity?

I understand this and I would also like the USB-Stick option discussed above better but as long as this is not realized, I´m searching for alternative approaches...

Accessing the Linux Filesystem on the Notebook should not be an issue with Ext3/Ext4 drivers for windows or am I missing something? I do access Linux Filesystems (such as Enigma) that way...

The question is would the WebIF even continue to the point where it checks whether there is an update file in the destination directory without having detected internet-access before?

Coming back to the update aspect, one additional thought (I still did not manage to download the new release due to poor network coverage at the airport :-[ and I do not want to take the PAW out frequently neither do I have a second Pi):

Assuming that the download and update process works in a way that the update-procedure first downloads the update file into a specific folder in the filesystem and that afterwards the software checks whether there is a file and if so starts the update, wouldn't it be possible to manually put the file into that folder and then click "update"?

Downloading at home, taking a notebook to the airport, putting the file into the respective folder using the notebook and then let the PAW do the update would work well for me...

Should that work, could you please indicate which folder in the filesystem to use?

General Discussion / Re: Antennas too large for the coaming
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:16:43 pm »
Got you thanks for this!

In fact the argument that it may not be a good idea to feed 240 Watts directly into the PAW is most
convincing...

I'll also not risk to kill the transponder...

I still do not like the idea to have two antennas inside the cabin and at least one transmitting. Since there is no way that we'll drill additional holes into the plane, I'm still wondering which other options I might have...

There has to be an ADF antenna somewhere which is not used any more. Maybe this existent hole and even wiring may provide options?

Ideally I'd still want both antennas to be outside...

General Discussion / Use of existing external antennas?
« on: July 13, 2016, 06:58:39 am »
Hi everybody,

taking into account that the two NAV units onboard use the same external antenna with a T-connection I was thinking whether (apart from legal aspects regarding fixed installation) it was possible to also use such T-connectors to wire PAW into existing and used external antennas such as the transponder-Antenna. That would ft regarding the frequency since it´s basically transponder signals we want to pick up... Regarding the sending antenna (860 MHz or so) I´m pretty sure there is no suitable antenna on the outside of a normal plane since no onboard system uses that frequency band...

Am I right with these assumptions and would the fact that the ransponder is a transmitting device while the PAW is a receiving devide "hurt" in this respect?

Thanks

General Discussion / Where to download manually?
« on: July 03, 2016, 12:20:23 pm »
Sorry for potentially being stupid today but where do I find the link to manually download a release please?

I mainly want to find out how large such a release is...

When visiting the "Download and Licensing" folder, I do not see any links there...

General Discussion / Re: Is a GPS dongle needed?

@ Paul_Sengupta

I´d also be very interested in cotinuing to use the IPAD GPS instead of the PAW GPS. It´s simply better located. Do I understand you corectly that this will be possible using the NMEA GPS App? If so, what setting would I need to apply? Did not seem to work in my first attempt...

Thanks

Peter,

thanks for this! Not a bad idea - I guess I could also work with two SD Cards, right? The airfield is about an hour drive and at the airfield is no option to really run the second Pi. Furthermore will I not have an issue since the other Pi will habe a different MAC address?

I´d still prefer the USB-Stick method since it saves me getting another Pi and I could still change the USB-Stick by simply taking a notebook to the airfield...

Another Alternative would be to use the remaining USB Port to temporarely put a USB-Stick with the new release in...

Then we could easily download at home, take the new release to the airport and just let it update...

Anything taking the situation at a hangar into account would help much!

General Discussion / Update Option
« on: July 02, 2016, 07:56:39 pm »
It would be great to be able to update the software over WLAN/WiFi. I have a Semi-fixed installation on our Mooney and there it is very hard at the hangar to make internet available over Ethernet. Easily available is a WiFi Hotspot via a mobile phone...

But I understand there is no such way (yet?)

Thanks!
