Thanks Peter.

No, my primary wifi issue remains. It's still intermittent. I have to reboot the pi every so often. Maybe 3 or 4 times between start up and take off. But after a few reboots it tends to settle down. I might have to reboot once an hour after that. I can do it with one hand and my eyes closed now :D

Hi Lee,

Just to let you know that the iGrid dongle arrived today.

It's achieved exactly what I want it to do.

My setup is:

Android tablet (wifi only) is connected to my PAW Classic.
My PAW Classic is connected to a hotspot created on my android phone.

Now my Android Tablet can see all the traffic from PAW (including iGRID traffic downloaded from the hotspot on my phone). But crutially for me, my Android Tablet (which is only connected to the PAW) now has full internet access. So EasyVFR4 can also download it's weather data, Airspace Plan, Notmas (not that I'm likely to be downloading those in flight!) etc. I've full internet access now (even emails/web browser etc).

Brilliant. That's worth for more to ME, than the iGRID data. I appreciate others might have different priorieties, but for me this is perfect. You should market that as a further benefit of the iGRID system. Not just traffic but now pull internet access!

For anyone else trying to do this, there is a setting on the network page called "Router". For me this was initially disabled and while I could get iGRID traffic, I could not get internet access. Once I changed that to "Enabled" it worked perfectly.

Thank you for the support!

Yes. I've connected it to my hdmi and I don't see any indication of any error on startup. It's lots of "Ok"s followed by a Pi Login.

That isn't too surprising because it usually all works on first startup. But after 5 mins the wifi disappears.
There are no visible changes on my hdmi connected monitor when the wifi disappears. It just remains at the pi log in screen.

Is there any log files that might give a clue?

Technical Support / Wifi Network Disappears

I'm using a Pilot Aware classic.

It's powered by an Anker 20100 power bank.

I regularly find that the wifi network disappears. To be clear, I don't mean that my tablet just disconnects from the Pilot Aware network, but rather that the network disappears altogether. So search for it to rejoin results in no network found. The only solution is to power down the PA, and power it up again.

When I connect it first, it often fails very quickly. After 3 or 4 reboots, it tends to become more stable, but even in flight, I'll usually have to reboot it once or twice.

I've two different Anker Power banks and the same thing happens with both. I've put a USB meter on it, and don't see any voltage drop.

Our aircraft recently got some USB outlets fitted and I've tried connecting to those and the same issue persists.

I bought some short, original Anker USB leads. So they should be high quality and have a very short run (about 15cm) so the cable shouldn't be an issue.

I tried turning down the wifi power on the PA, to reduce power consumption in case that was the issue, but it didn't result in any noticeable improvement.

I should say that this is a long standing problem, that I've just not got around to posting about previously.

In summary, I've tried 2 different high quality Anker Power Banks plus aircraft power, and tested with a usb meter. I've tried a number of high quality cables.
Not sure what else to try.
Is there anything that I should be looking for in the log files that might help to diagnose the issue?

I'd like to ask a question that I asked a few years ago, in case a new solution has been found since then!

I am using a Pilot Aware Classic and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Tablet.

My Tab S6 is wifi only and so when it's connected to the Pilot Aware via Wifi, it has no internet connection. This means that I can't update weather inflight on my tablet.

The Tab S6 is connected to my aircraft via Bluetooth, so that I have aural warnings through the aircraft intercom. So Bluetooth to my phone for internet connection isn't possible either as Bluetooth is already in use.

So my question is, is there a way to either:

1. Have the Pilot Aware act as a router, with my phone as the gateway. So anything connected to the Pilot Aware network, when requesting internet access, is directed to my phone (which is also connected to the Pilot Aware network). In essence, Pilot Aware sets up the network, and my Tab S6 tablet connects to it, as does my phone. When my tab S6 (or Pilot Aware itself) wants internet access, the request is routed to the phone which has a GSM connection. Is that possible?

or alternatively,

2. Is it possible that the Pilot Aware, instead of setting up its own network, can simply join another network as a client? In that case, I could set up a mobile hotspot on my phone, and have the Pilot Aware and Tab S6 Tablet connect to it. The other devices would have internet access from the phone's hotspot, and the Pilot Aware would broadcast the traffic info to all devices on the network. This would involve Pilot Aware being a client rather than a host. Is that possible?

Hopefully there is a way of doing this since I last asked  :) If not, then sorry for the repeated question!

Technical Support / Wifi Classic

I am using a pilot aware classic, and love it.

It's based on the Pi Model 2B, so no internal wifi. So I'm using a wifi dongle.

The only thing that I don't like about my PA is that I lose the ability to get internet access on my tablet when connected to the PA. My tablet has no 4G connection and relies on a wifi connection to my phone's hotspot.

Previously I was able to use bluetooth to get around this problem, but since replacing my old iPad with a Samsung Tab S6, this is no longer possible. The bluetooth connection on the Tab S6 refuses to share internet saying that it's already got a wifi connection and I can't share internet connection on bluetooth with an active wifi connection!

But I got to thinking. Is it possible to install a second wifi dongle on the PA Classic so that the second wifi connection connects to the mobile hotspot from my phone, and then shares out the internet connection through the existing PA hotspot?

That way any device connected to the PA would be able to have internet access!

Is it possible? If so, any guidance on how to do it?

Thanks
Colm

Thanks Peter,

I tried your instructions (the only thing different to what I've tried before was turning off wifi an enabling the mobile hotspot. Don't see these should make a different, but I tried anyway!)

Alas, it made no difference. My Galaxy S6 & iPad 3 refuse to talk over Bluetooth.

I don't think "To download updates, PAW's WiFi would need to be configured as a 'Client' and as Lee has told us several times in the past, it has to be configured as a 'host' so it can supply the necessary data to the Nav systems." is the full store though.

Plenty of devices act as clients and supply information to other devices across the network. But there may be something else going on for which the PAW needs to be the host.

It's a pity though, was it will lead to complications as more devices become connected in the cockpit, where people have to choose between their PAW and some other device that also insists on being the host.

Hi Peter,

I've tried many time to make my iPad talk to my phone via Bluetooth without success. But I'll give it a go doing exactly what you say tomorrow and let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Unfortunately Bluetooth isn't an option.

I've an Apple iPad and an Android phone. Apple won't talk to Android phones over Bluetooth.

But it's not just this. Similar issues will arise for people using connected cockpits (eg Dynon connected to EasyVFR, or Garmins connected to Garmin Pilot).

Unless I'm mistaken, allowing the device to connect as a client rather than a host, is how Golze solved the same problem with their ADL sat weather devices. https://www.ing-golze.de/products_adl140.jsp

It would be nice if PAW had a solution for allowing data through too.

Hi RG,

In your case you are getting your internet connection from your 4G tablet.

I don't have a mobile connection on my tablet, and would normally get it from my phone if needed (by creating a hotspot on my phone and connecting my tablet to it via WiFi).

But obviously the tablet can only be connected to one WiFi hotspot at a time. Hence I need to choose between PAW and my phone.

That I was hoping is that there is some facility to use PAW as a WiFi client rather than a WiFi host. This is the usual way of solving this problem. But I can't see any way to have PAW connect to another network; only have it create its own one.

Is there a way that I can configure my pilot aware, that it can use my mobile phone to have an internet connection across the wifi?

I'm thinking of two possibilities.

1. Perhaps some way that my mobile can join the PilotAware wifi network, and share it's mobile connection so that other devices connected to the PAW can use the internet?

2. Instead of using the PAW network, my phone creates a hotspot, to which other devices and the pilot aware can connect (and PAW shares the data across this network)?

My reason for this is to be able to download weather updates and use the Flight tracking feature in EasyVFR at the same time as PAW.

Thanks
Colm
