Technical Support / Re: Audio out into typical GA headset
« on: February 14, 2019, 05:27:08 pm »
Thanks Garry - that's a good start, however it's going to 'back-feed' the aircraft audio into the Pi's audio output - which can't be good for it!  :-\

Technical Support / Audio out into typical GA headset
« on: February 13, 2019, 05:58:20 pm »
I fly various aircraft, and I don't recall any having an aux-in on the audio panel.
My noise cancelling DC headset works perfectly and i'd rather not replace it...

Can anyone recommend an in-line mixer that can inject the PAW audio output into my headset speaker input?
Or an attenuator to connect it into a spare headset mic input? (Eg for rear-seat passengers)

Or another method?

Alan.

Technical Support / Re: Suitable battery pack?
« on: March 08, 2018, 04:18:01 pm »
I was looking for a solution without a separate battery pack.

I also experimented with a Pi battery for an all-in-one solution in my 3D printed case as shown here: http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,1144.0.html
The general advise was not to, for risk of it exploding / sudden death etc etc. The fact that batteries in PowerBanks are the same technology appears irrelevant.
Anyway, if you'd like the 'tall' version of my case to fit the PAW and the Pi battery (or with some modifications, the battery you have) let me know.
I have the 'batteryless' version for sale on ebay currently.

The tablet must be connected to the PilotAware wifi hotspot. The fact you see your talktalk router suggests that it's NOT connected to the PilotAware wifi.
Once it is, go to http://192.168.1.1 to get the status.
If that doesn't load (or you can't see the PilotAware hotspot) then it suggests that the software isn't properly installed / upgraded - i'd suggest you wipe the card (or use another) and re-install using the download here: https://pilotaware.lode.co.uk/

It sounds like your tablet is not connected to the PAW WiFi hotspot.
From the tablet's WiFi settings, can you see a 'PilotAwareXXXX' network ?

It will be good to see your design once you get it finished.
Peter

Peter, yours was posted today, hopefully with you tomorrow or Friday.
Attached are pictures of your black case with my PAW bits fitted as well as a version with mounting lugs. I sent you a different lid however as I wasn't happy with the finish of the one pictured below.

Note, you need to spring the case walls apart a little when fitting the Pi/bridge in order to clear the audio socket, while you slide it towards the P3I antenna socket hole.
The case lid is held on with the 4 screws into the Pi mounting pillars, and a block / latch at the fan end - so it needs to slide into place. Carefully check the fan wires aren't pinching on anything.

Let me know how you get on with it and any suggested improvements.

Quick Q - why have option without lugs?

Yes, I mentioned it in the item description. Default option is without lugs. I'll change the photos to show a lug-less version as the primary photo later.

Only do this if you have lots of time and are bored because the weather is preventing you from flying!  Would I do it again? probably not. I would wait for availability from http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,1144.msg13827.html#msg13827

Now on ebay :)

All, the design has evolved a bit to allow a USB connected fan, but I finally now have all the parts so they are listed on ebay :)

Replacement receiver arrived today.
Connected via my pigtail > SMA cable and case mounted SMA antenna - over 51 thousand ADS messages received in 16 minutes uptime sitting at home, and 10 lines of traffic on the traffic page  :)

So looks like the SDR was faulty. Will try with RunwayHD shortly.
Thanks Lee & Dave for arranging the replacement parts!

Follow-up.
I've now tried 3 different antennas and a 'bit of wire'.

I spent about an hour parked next to the runway at Luton, at least 30 flights came and went in that time, of which 4 or 5 were reported as traffic in the 'Traffic' screen - but only there for a few seconds then gone.
None were reported in RunwayHD. (I had 2 devices connected to show both at the same time).
Only 303 ADS messages received in total (PAW powered up before I left home). No power complaints, good GPS fix.

I can't believe that 3 different antennas are faulty, or the 'bit of wire' also - so have to assume the dongle is deaf.

Screenshots attached - any other ideas?

If they were very local and strong signal, you may have, like when an aircraft is on short final.
That's possible. I was parked here: https://goo.gl/maps/hy2xsRnvMFN2

Why don’t you try Petes idea to remove the antenna cable and stick a short length of wire in the dongle. Costs nothing. 5” should do, even a straightened paperclip. If that is an improvement we can make a quick dipole from the antenna cable( assuming issue of is not plug end).
Will try that, thanks.

I'm next due to fly on Wednesday, so would like to get this working before then, if possible.
Assuming the dongle or antenna is faulty, can anyone point me to a suitable dongle (preferably on Amazon with next-day delivery!) that is known to work with the PAW?
SMA connector is preferable.

This seems to confirm Exfirepro’s 5th post of this thread, that you have the vertical limits within Runway HD closed down sufficiently to only see the landing traffic for 10 secs or so. Also, if you only had three lines of traffic in the traffic log, this suggests a lull in received traffic, so a relatively quiet time in the skies over Luton.?
It's set to 40,000'
There was an aircraft landing every minute or two. I stayed about 20.

Or a duff antenna
If so I'd not have seen the ~600 received messages, surely?
