General Discussion / Re: Bridge only to Rosetta path?
« on: June 28, 2018, 04:43:33 pm »
You can run 2 x low power dongles on a Pi2B, but depending on your setup, (e.g. PAW Out to Transponder), you might need to upgrade to a Pi3 to free up a USB port for the second dongle.

Perfect thanks that's what I was after!

If you do decide to upgrade to a Pi3, remember that at the present time PilotAware only supports the Pi 3B NOT the 3B+ which needs a different setup.

Ahh right okay, Is there any plans to update the software for the newer pi? Just wondering if its worth holding off buying a Pi3B only to end up buying a 3B+ a few months down the line!

Thanks
Ash

Thanks for the quick reply!

Looking to future-proof my setup, would I simply need an extra SDR dongle to enable weather if it becomes "a thing" or would I need up upgrade the mainboard to a Pi3b+ too?

As the title says, I've had a look around but cant see anything relevant, unless a bridge only would be classed as a "classic" in terms of this upgrade ... so is there any plans for an upgrade path from a bridge only build? (and also is there any point?)

If it helps, the bridge board has a version number "v0.35" marked on it.

I grabbed power for my fan which is mounted in the same location by cutting off the connector and soldering the cables directly onto the PAW bridge as it has headers for both 5v and gnd coming from the pi. Not sure if this is the best way or what but hey it works  ;)

No it needs to go on top of the chip nearest the USB plug, I cut a PI heatsink in half and seems to fit ok.

Will have a look on ebay and give that a go! ;D

Looks like mine, much better in these cases!

The only other thing I have done is to add self adhesive heat sinks to the pi and the TV USB chip, makes a big difference to keeping the PIs USB ports cooler...

I was thinking about doing this but the pi itself doesn't really seem to get that hot, the TV chip however does! Where have you managed to stick the heatsink as I cant really see anywhere suitable on mine unless I just stick it to the back of the board?

Just got my hands on one of these cases, so time to move on from the standard case I had drilled holes in and cable tied all sorts to the outside :D

Maybe a bit of a strange question, but (other than de-soldering and adding one myself) is there any chance of there being a version of the PAW Bridge with an internal antennae connector to enable me to position both antennae where I want them? (ie. both on the side or top as the PAW bridge SMA connector doesn't line up with the hole on the stratux case)

I realise this may be a bit of a niche request but just thought I would throw it out there!

To make a change such as this, we would likely have to rerun all the ETSI testing to ensure this does not alter the harmonic distortion - not an easy or inexpensive task I'm afraid

Thx
Lee

No problem, I figured it might be more hassle than it was worth!

I've included a few pictures of how it turned out for anyone else who is tempted, I think they look pretty smart in these cases! :) (edit: sorry about the quality, needed to make the files smaller to upload but if anyone wants to see better pictures just drop me an email / pm)

The only modifications needed where to slightly extend the one hole for the P3i antennae on the PAW Bridge as it doesn't quite line up with the pre-drilled holes in the case. The ADSB antennae is connected with a short pigtail to give me a second slightly offset SMA connector. I have also removed the covers from both the GPS and the SDR to minimise the heat build up and allow the air to cool them down a bit easier. Final addition was a male to male threaded connector on the back of the case for attaching it to a window suction cup, although it would probably look right at home sat on the combing if I could find some decent non slip feet! (club aircraft so can't really stick it down with velcro)

Technical Support / Re: Profile Issue with 20161124

Have managed to fix the issue myself ... for anyone else having the same error -

Saving the current profile seems to create the required folder and then you are able to use the profile selection screen as intended

Technical Support / Profile Issue with 20161124
« on: December 02, 2016, 02:26:58 pm »
Seem to be having an issue with profiles after an auto-update over Ethernet, when clicking "Profiles" in the config menu I am presented with a blank page with just the heading "PilotAware Profile Management" ... after looking at the log pages i can see the following error occurs when clicking on the profile button:

Code: [Select]
/bin/ls: cannot access /root/cache/Profiles: No such file or directory
Also the radar screen when viewed on a PC scales to fit the width however goes off the bottom of the visible screen vertically, could cause issues if you where to use a tablet in landscape mode?

Otherwise all went smoothly!

Ancien, Looks good!

I'm toying with the idea of using a couple of the antennae from the PAW shop however my only concern is the 3m cable length, how did you find managing this? Do they still work okay if you just bundle the cables up and zip tie them?

I'm currently looking for some suckers that fit my Pi case so i can just stick the whole thing to the passenger side back windows in a PA28 by the luggage door (portable build - rental aircraft) but your idea with sticking the antannae to the windows and putting the PAW box in the pocket seems like a good one, as currently i just poke the fixed antannae and gps dongle on a short extension out the top of my flight bag, its not pretty but all seems to work okay!

Hi Chris
Deker is correct, i thing the implementation is +/- 15 degrees is classed as level.
We are thinking of changing this to report the relative height difference, Would this be better ?
I am very interested in comments about the reporting message, because this issue is raised frequently

Thx
Lee
Hi Lee and Deker,

Oops! Just after making the above post, I thought I should work the angle out, then had to go out.

When you're in the circuit, fairly tight in, the angle down to the airfield just looks so much greater than a paltry 4 degrees. Anyhow please accept my apologies.

I do feel that relative height difference would be preferable within the current audio alerting system than High/ Level /Low  classifications that we have at the moment. Seems somehow easier to contextualise.

What do others think?

Thx,

Chris

I would personally have expected "Level" to be say within a set hight eg. 500ft vertically of current altitude and then LOW or HIGH to be anything outside of that range, however this might just be me interpreting things differently, i can certainly see why a funnel type system of +/- 15 deg. could be useful too

Hi, this is odd, it should come up immediately.

Are the built up units shipped with the SD card in an "tested" state or just having had the files copied across, meaning that like with my self build you have to wait for it to install on first boot?

General Discussion / Re: ADSB receiver dongle

Morning guys,
I ordered one of the linked USB-ADSB things from NooElec (R820T2) to try and tidy up my set-up however in testing i'm finding it rather less sensitive than the mini cheapo ebay one I had before, have any of you found this?

Trying to work out if its a faulty receiver, a faulty antennae (I ordered the 1090MHz ADS-B tuned SMA one from NooElec http://www.nooelec.com/store/1090mhz-ads-b-antenna-3dbi-sma.html - should i have gone for the 5DBi gain one?) or just a worse set up than the "cheap mini" recommended one!

Any thoughts? for now i'm just using the more expensive cooler running receiver for a FlightRadar feed :)

General Discussion / Re: Shipping time?

Just to update you ... my bridge unit arrived today (yay)  ;D

All set up and working, great piece of kit!

I understand that this isn't run as a "business" but maybe as an idea to keep future customers happy, add a note in the confirmation email that orders may take a week to arrive as I can see the postage label on the parcel was printed yesterday meaning that it was actually in transit less than 24 hours, so was a pretty quick delivery which justifies the shipping charge, its just a shame it took 6 days for the parcel to make it to the post office, maybe worth looking into what a low cost courier would actually charge to collect parcels from your address as i'm sure myHermes collect the parcel and deliver it within 3 days for less and £5 which although its a much slower delivery, it would reduces the waiting time before orders are sent out!

Anyway, I've got it now and its a great piece of kit, please don't take this message the wrong way, I am actually also waiting for the CAA to tell me that ive put a capital letter in the wrong place on my PPL(A) application form so know what you're going through!

Keep up the good work  ;)
