Thanks, I might pop back up tomorrow since we seem to be having a spell of decent weather, and see if the same problem occurs.

Its not hardwired into my aircraft, I bought the premade unit from Pilotaware, I updraded the GPS dongle to a gps mouse, but thats the only alteration. It lives in the back of the aircraft powered by a powerbank with the Pilotaware unit and all the aerials mounted ontop.

I've never had this issue before, but yesterday while getting a traffic service from Boscombe Zone, I was asked if I was flying in formation with another aircraft. I replied saying that I wasn't, and the controller said it was weird as another aircraft had been following indicating about 200ft separation. I've never encountered this before, the HEX is set to the aircraft. PilotAware is the only thing I could think of as to why it was showing two aircraft, but I'm not quite sure why. Any ideas?

Ahh ok, I thought this allowed glider traffic using the service to see my aircraft too? Which if is the case surely it's better to have them able to see you too.

Is there a guide somewhere to opt-in to the OGN with a PilotAware unit?

I understand that when we choose "Register a Device" we then select OGN, but after this what is the Devide ID? I'm guessing Registration is simply the aircraft reg? Also is the Competition field relevant?

My biggest concern is only registering the PilotAware unit, so if the other shareholders fly without my PilotAware unit I haven't opted the aircraft as a whole into the OGN.

General Discussion / Re: FLARM is it worth the upgrade?

Thanks for the replies. It’s disappointing to see the price rising with the announcement of PilotAware integration, especially when it’s something safety critical. You’re right you really can’t put a price on safety, it just seems quite unethical if that’s the reason the FLARM units are so expensive now.

You’ve certainly given me more to think about, I think however I’m slightly less sold on the idea than I was before.

General Discussion / FLARM is it worth the upgrade?
« on: January 12, 2017, 12:40:42 pm »
I've been using PilotAware for a while now, and in my opinion it's improved a great deal in the last few months! The last few flights I've taken it's identified all but a couple of aircraft. My question really goes out to anyone who has purchased a FLARM Mouse. Was it worth it? Do you feel the GPS is improved? Do you see much FLARM traffic? And how do you Power both PilotAware and the FLARM Mouse?

Thanks

Hmm weird, I was looking through the logs too, and couldn’t find a reference to the registration, or a similar reg. However I’m 99.9% sure Skydemon was displaying the aircraft registration. I’m probably not going to be flying for a week or two, but I’ll take a screenshot if it does it again!

Hi Lee

Here is a link to the track files: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/674427/Track.zip

The reason I presumed it was my aircraft activating the Mode-C was because before the update, as long as it had the correct hex code for the aircraft it didn’t show on Skydemon for Mode-S. However during these flights my registration was showing next to the ring.

I was using Mode-CS(Beta), I have just noticed Mode-CS+Filter(Beta), I’m now guessing this was the one I should have selected to filter out my own aircraft?

Thanks

General Discussion / Mode-C sporadic results
« on: September 01, 2016, 11:00:12 am »
Flew over to Alderney and back yesterday with Mode-C enabled. I have the hex code of the aircraft entered. Using Skydemon in the past it’s always removed the Mode-S aircraft hovering next to me (my aircraft), however on at least 6 occasions it showed my aircrafts registration, Mode-C and anything from -1.1 to -4.5 with the circle being green, orange, or red. Surely if it was my aircraft and the hex code was entered it shouldn’t be picking me up, and having such large variances in separation?

Thanks

General Discussion / Mode-S problem with SkyDemon
« on: May 30, 2016, 11:38:21 pm »
Today we took two very short flights, from Kemble to Gloucestershire and back. PilotAware did its job, however the bearingless readings were overlayed in exactly the same location of the screen making all of the information unreadable. I'm fairly sure this is a SkyDemon problem, however it's quite a major problem. Perhaps one to bring up with Tim and the team? It would work much better if bearless traffic information was listed in the bottom left corner, or a custom location rather than overlayed on top of your aircraft.

Ahh ok thanks Lee, it will teach me not to read up on documentation properly! I'm flying over to the Channel Islands in the next week or so, I'll read up, and hopefully have everything sorted by then!

Thanks Peter,

Unfortunately it's a club aircraft so attaching velcro to the aircraft is not really an option. However I flew today and it fit very snugly on the dash of a PA28. I did some steep turns, and there was quite a lot of turbulence, it didn't move whatsoever! In-fact its so snug I don't think it could go anywhere. I easily sorted the cable problem with velcro straps, everyone else who saw the unit today was impressed with how the PilotAware looks.

GPS worked very well today with no drop-outs, I saw quite a few aircraft on my SkyDemon thanks to the PilotAware unit, but I'm not sure if it's picking up Mode-S. It should have picked up my aircraft, but didn't. The aircraft is equipped with Mode-S, and 'Flightradar24' certainly picked it up.

I’ve bought one of the GPS mice and it seems to have solved the problems I was having.
I’m ready to properly test in the cockpit the next couple of days. I’ve covered the top of my power pack in velcro, and then attached the Pilot Aware unit, GPS mouse, and ADS-B antenna with velcro. I’ve also attached a non-slip matt to the bottom of the power pack. It seems pretty sturdy, I just placed it on my dashboard, and went for a drive, it stayed in place without moving at all! I just need to think of the best way to tidy the cables up now
