General Discussion / USB Cigarette Lighter Adaptor
« on: June 04, 2025, 09:54:07 am »
As a plane renter, my PAW moves with me.  I still struggle with power issues on the PAW, even though I am using the official lead and approved power pack.  In April, I was throttled on every flight, but last week I was green the whole day.

I noticed in my latest rental that it has a cigarette lighter socket, and wondered if I could use this to provide a better power supply to the PAW.  But conscious that this is likely to have power surges etc, and don't want to fry my PAW.  Is anyone aware of a USB/Cigarette light adaptor that has a surge protector built into it?  I can't find one on Amazon.

Thanks, David

Thanks for the responses - I don't see anything there that persuades me to upgrade.

General Discussion / Rosetta -> FX Upgrade SOLVED
« on: November 25, 2024, 01:03:10 pm »
I've just received the email about the FX trade-in, but I am a bit confused about how the new unit differs.

I have the PAW Rosetta and use it as a carry on device, so I have the two aerials on the unit and a USB power pack suppling power.

  • The FX purchase page makes no mention of needing a power pack, so does this mean it has an internal battery?
  • Antenna's - do I need Internal or Carry on?  What is the difference?
  • Does the unit need to be suctioned onto the external window like the Rosetta had to be?
  • Is there anything else I need to know as an ex-Rosetta owner?

Thanks, Dave

Technical Support / Re: Waiting for device

I'm running a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (SM-T220) on Android 13, and although I was having problems earlier in the year with "waiting for device" messages, I haven't had any in the last couple of months.  I've reduced the power output of the PAW, as I keep getting the "throttled" message (different problem).

Not sure if this helps.  Happy to check other device settings if people want me to.

I had the same problem today a couple of times - a warning that connection had been lost, but no discernible problem in Skydemon.  The logs were intact as a single log, and it seemed to recover immediately.  I wonder if this is a very minor timeout issue, that was hidden from us before Tim introduced the audio alert to loss of connection in SD recently?

General Discussion / Re: PAW Router
« on: June 15, 2022, 11:33:29 am »
So I need to:
    • Spin up a wifi hotspot on my phone
    • Connect the PAW to the phone hotspot
    • Connect the tablet to the phone hotspot
    • Enable the router option in PAW

Is that it?

Does this affect the way Skydemon connects to PAW?

Thanks, Dave

Thanks Dave.  Throttling needs to be resolved first. The USB leads don't last for ever in my experiance. I would try another high quality one first, as short as you can. I have also seen the ADSB dongle draw excessive power due to failure(but still report traffic). They do get warm, but if hot may be worth swapping that out.

Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian,

I'm a bit disappointed that in the 3 years I've owned the Rosetta, and only done 40 hours flying in that time, that I've had to replace the USB lead already (and I am extremely careful with the use and storage of the same), and now looking at another lead and possibly an ADSB dongle too.  How much will that cost?  I don't want this to come across as over-critical, and the innovation of the product is excellent, but I'm disappointed with the execution of the hardware.  Is it just me?

Come on give us a clue.

Which version of Pilot aware are you running?

Sorry, Rosetta running 20220101.  It was the "Waiting for device" message, and accessing the PAW web page from Chrome didn't work either, although the device wifi was reporting that it was connected to the PAW hotspot.

Flew again last weekend without any problems, although I am getting the "throttling" message frequently even though I am using the Anker PowerCore 10000 and juicebitz lead.

I've now upgraded to the latest version 20220531, and will let you know if it happens again.

PAW rosetta connecting to Skydemon on Android.

Yesterday in the climb out, Skydemon reported waiting for device, it was previously fine in the take off run. After stabilising the plane, I switched to chrome to view the status of the PAW, but the website was unresponsive. Android confirmed I was still connected to the PAW WIFI, and I could see lights in the device, although not which ones. Eventually I recycled the power to the PAW, which stopped Skydemon navigation completely. Once PAW restored, I restarted Skydemon and everything was OK for the rest of the flight.

Technical Support / Re: No METAR/TAF

Hello again,

I went flying on Friday - Rochester, Ashford, Tunbridge Wells, Rochester, in a new shareoplane (G-BUEG) and this time I did pick up a METAR, but only one line from Calais, nothing from the UK.  I would have expected to see Lydd, and possibly Southend, Biggin Hill and Shoreham.  Any ideas why not?

Thanks
Dave

Yes it's a shareoplane, so someone must have still have it configured on their Skyecho device.

I was looking on the web portal screen - switching back and forth between that and Skydemon as there was a particularly nasty CB over MAY that I wanted to avoid (and only just scraped past in the end with the help of Farnborough LARS).  I wasn't necessarily expecting PAW to have the answer, but was getting desperate  :-[ :-X

How long would any reports stay on the page?  If they expire after a certain number of minutes then I might just have been unlucky.  Is there a specific browser on Android that works best with PAW?

Thanks
Dave

Standard antennas, and the unit located in the right-hand side of the windscreen (C172, so just proud of the front of the wing).  The antennas are both vertical and the unit positioned so they are at the frontmost.

I've downloaded the trk files - is there anything I can look for in there?

Thanks
David

Yes I am getting some traffic info (on Skydemon), and also the coloured circle for bearingless targets.

I always check the main screen before departure and I have all 4 green lights.  Unfortunately, I won't be flying again for a few days, but even in my house I get 4 greens (see attached).

The long aerial is in the 869.5 Mhz port, and the short aerial in the 1090 Mhz port.  This is the only EC device I have.

PSU is Anker Powercore 1000 and the lead is the Juicebitz approved lead.

Thanks, David
