Technical Support / Re: Sky Demon not connecting with PA
« on: April 20, 2021, 01:01:32 pm »
Thanks that worked but I couldn’t log back into Demon App as it did not  recognise my password. I could get into Demon website with it though!

After changing password several  times still no luck. I then sought help from Demon helpdesk.
Answer......

Dont use any symbols in your password!! I was doing so.

I changed Demon password using only letters and numbers and all was fine.

What a faff.

Technical Support / Sky Demon not connecting with PA
« on: April 17, 2021, 10:07:36 am »
I am using an iPad mini with the latest IOS 14.4.2 software and also an iPhone 11 max with the latest software.
I last flew in December 2021 and all was working fine. My Rossetta has the latest firmware.
I just use the iPad for nav. The phone is backup.

On 15/4/21 the iPad  would not navigate. Wifi is connected ok, when I press ‘go flying’  the connection does not complete. iPhone and iPad  have had software updates since I last flew.

It DOES work when I connect to the iPhone!

I have reloaded the PA firmware, power supply and cable  is good, PA is operating normally when  I connected to ipad, its seeing traffic and all items are green.

I have read numerous posts from last year on this subject and nothing I have done  fixes it.

Technical Support / New 20190621 firmware update
« on: July 09, 2019, 03:55:57 pm »
Once again its taken me pretty well two days to get my PA working again. You virtually need a degree in computing to own and operate PilotAware?
If I wasn't retired and have the time to mess around downloading updates getting it all installed and then having to do it all again because the damned thing won’t work properly I would have chucked it in the bin by now.
The other thing is that I now that lots of traffic is not picked up by PA as we know all about how transponders work etc.
I think PAW is just taking my eyes inside too much and I am missing some traffic I should be seeing and did see before I got PAW.
Lets hope that this update allows us to update the damned thing over wifi without all the messing about we currently have?
Or shall I go and buy a SkyEcho2 ?

Technical Support / Re: Rosetta Mount
« on: July 31, 2018, 08:24:46 pm »
I only heard about the Rossetta via word of mouth from another pilot, I already owned the old device. I upgraded to Rosetta and have the same problem as others.... how to mount it. Yes its got a screw hole in the base. Why the hell don’t  the instructions say what size the hole is and that Pilotaware sell a mount for it if that is the case?
Thanks to the link above I’ve bought the one from Amazon.
Communications are pretty bad with customers are they not??

Thanks, viewed. I am not seeing any symbols for mode C and S. I dont use audio as Liverpool is so busy where I am based.
The unit is receiving mode C and S as I can  see them in the traffic log when I view the unit via iPad.

I have got Demon set to show bearingless targets.

I am  comparing what I see on demon with flightradar24 whilst on the ground just one mile south of Wal VOR and I see all the commercial stuff Easy, Ryanair etc as a jet symbol. I do see odd light aircraft which looks like they are on mode S, usually Cirrus and better equipped types,  the vast majority of light aircraft many of which I know to be on mode C are not seen. I have the unit outside with a clear view of the Sky etc.
Yesterday there were 5 light aircraft just north of me not seen, even one passed overhead coming into Liverpool and I know he was on 5050 mode C, nothing showed up on Demon connected to PAW.
I can see commercial stuff way beyond the Isle of Man no problem.
The other day we met a helicopter near Banbury at 1500’, he was squalking 7000 mode C  and I didnt see him on Demon. Nor am I picking up gliders on Flarm.
Basically I do not see the main dangers to me, other light aircraft unless they have PAW and gliders.

General Discussion / Not seeing mode C aircraft on Sky Demon
« on: May 02, 2018, 09:07:43 pm »
I have had an issue with my ADSB aerial which is now repaired and I can see on traffic logging that the unit is receiving mode C aircraft as well as mode S.
When  I connect to Sky Demon I am only seeing mode S aircraft. I have read all the setup instructions over and over, I think I am set up correctly, has anybody got any ideas please?
Thanks,
despirate of Wirral!

Technical Support / Re: ADSB aerial fault
« on: April 29, 2018, 04:25:42 pm »
The fix is.......take base sticker off aerial which reveals a small metal disk plate with a small magnet in the middle, remove magnate if you dont need it to affix to a metal surface, remove metal baseplate, solder inner core back onto base of aerial rod, solder outer coax onto inside of metal baseplate, then put a cable tie inside on the cable so that the cable cannot pull out through the hole in the plastic base, before you refit the metal baseplate fill the whole bottom of the base with epoxy or similar which will stop all movement of the cable.
I then powered up the PAW and ADSB came back on strong and clear. If you are moving the unit about and it is not fixed in the aircraft this aerial is a weak point and the cable will not stand being moved around, it will fail just as mine did.

Technical Support / ADSB aerial fault
« on: April 29, 2018, 10:55:51 am »
My unit stopped receiving mode S and C targets, the log was saying ADSB fault. Having examined the aerial and taken the base off it I found there is a magnet inside which you don't need in an aircraft next to your compass. The lead is small coax and the centre cable had broken off the bottom of the mast where it is soldered. The outside braid was just in contact with the baseplate and not soldered on.
The cause of the problem appears to be that where the cable enters the bottom of the aerial there is nothing to prevent movement up to the soldered joint and as there will be a lot of movement with the cable it is bound to break the soldered joint. The whole thing is cheap and nasty and not made to last.
I have only used it for 20hrs and it lives in my flight bag when not flying, I have been careful with it.
I am going  to try and get it soldered back on and make the cable entry more secure and see how long it lasts but I am not holding my breath.
