Title: METAR feature in latest software??
Post by: steveu on December 08, 2019, 05:00:56 pm
Just seen the METAR button in the latest software but can't see how to configure it.

How does this work?

Hi Steve

I don't actually think it needs any configuring, I believe that button slipped into that sub menu during an earlier update and Lee has not moved it back to the Home page yet.
I suspect the software picks up your locally situated airfield metars automatically.

Alan

Hi,
With the version 20200410, the METAR funcion became alive on my station MI02, located between LIML and LIME
It reports LSZA, LSZS, LSZL metar stations. Why?

Obviously part of ongoing developments. I’m sure all will be revealed when the time is right... ;)  8)

I like the Metar  :)

Can you autopopulate the config.cgi screen to show existing station data rather than 0, 0, 0, 0,  ?

:) keep up the good work

actually the config screen is non-functional, it was an early experiment
there is no longer a way to get to that from the front page - you must have remembered it was there!

Thx

The METARs screen is very useful. I just need to be more familiar with ICAO codes.

As a Kent strip I'm getting METARs from nearby French airfields.

The METARS are sent within a 150km range, so being in Kent - I guess that explains why ;-)

Thx

Current  METAR upload to Skydemon from Groundstations ..now wouldn't that be something!!?   :)

Skydemon already gives weather displays if connected to the Internet - we sacrifice the Internet for the wireless connection to the PilotAware.

Another option could be for there to be a METAR page to look at from the PAW Traffic display, one button for showing the local METARs.

It's interesting that a sister network, the Burnair Skynet in Switzerland, a FANET based network already has weather to upload to the Internet and to all instruments running the FANET protocol.

Just to say a big thank you to everyone involved with development of the ATOM-GRID ground stations, the METAR page has been improved and it's a massive one.

It's much easier to read in a hurry, especially if you don't remember your ICAO codes.

Quick question, we now have METAR entry lines in red, blue and green.

Assuming green means latest, valid and up to date, can you tell us what criteria put a METAR into blue or red, please?

I still think introducing your own colour codes is a mistake. There is a perfectly good, understood by many, semi-international colour code system so why re-invent the wheel?

Hi Paul
Its not our schema, its used by all the metar sites
Here is an example

https://www.aviationweather.gov/metar/help?page=plot

https://www.experimentalaircraft.info/wx/colors-metar-taf.php

http://www.pilotsandweather.com/metarcolors.html

I think the one you are referring to is possibly the military system?
Thx

Hi Lee,

Many thanks for this, I really appreciate the continuing evolution, as do the people using the 360Radar ATOM display at my strip.

The French Meteo website uses the colour scheme Steve mentioned...

just to add to possibilities

and Also in SkyDemon
Quote
Weather bulletins (TAF and METAR) are represented on the main map as green, yellow and red dots symbolising good, marginal and bad conditions for VFR flight

Fair enough and good points, well made  ;D

The one I referred to is the military colour code scheme but that was in force long before Sky Demon etc did their thing. Why THEY re-invented the wheel we'll never know and why the Aviation Briefing Service is different again does add questions but the important thing is your colour codes DO match up with another accepted scheme (including the Frogs.......almost, as they have blue as 'very' VFR), so all is well in the world again. I have to admit I never knew of those other colour schemes but that is my fault. I shall go and self-flagellate as punishment for suggesting you're making things up when they are available and only my ignorance prevented me from knowing about them.

I'm happy with things, got a useful answer quickly which I've passed onto those at the airstrip.

This, along with the names in addition to ICAO codes has transformed the METAR screen for us, so thanks again.

Hi Lee,
I like the PAW Radar with airfields and METAR info. Sadly I'm not seeing the same radar screen on the Classic PAW as on your CFG graphic. Am I failing to configure something?

Chris,

The METAR Uplink feature has been incorporated into the latest OGN-R Station software for testing,  but isn’t yet viewable on the current ‘Public Release’ PAW software (Version 20190621).

Thanks Peter,
Good to know that more good stuff is in the next PAW release. The METAR certainly looks good in OGN-R. :)

Just to further muddy the waters, EasyVFR uses the following colour coding standards which are selectable.

Regards to all,

Chris

Edit: so the colour code posted by PaulSS coincides with the NATO code, unsurprisingly. I confess this is the one I usually use on EVFR to quickly assess the weather around the region.
