Hi Tony
What LED's are flashing when you boot up PilotAware ?
As you look at the case from the rear, there should be a constant RED LED on the far left,
and a GREEN LED that flashes 4 times, followed by a 2 second gap.
What is your power source type and rating ?
For final debugging, if you have access to ah HDMI Monitor/TV, you can connect the HDMI
this may produce some messages to indicate any hardware issue
-
hi
no constant red
just flashing alternate red and green
then 2 second gap
then red /green twice each
power 2 amp stable supply from fully charged battery (also under charge from ipad charger)
-
green now flashing 4 times
red flashing every 1 second
gps dongle green every second (seems ok on that)
-
no constant red
if there is no constant red - it is a power issue.
The constant red flashes or diminishes when there is a power issue.
Are you using the cable supplied with PilotAware ?

Could it also be that you've managed to dislodge the SD card?

Hi ALL
thanks problem solved
it was a dodgy cable from self powered battery to PAW
used another known cable
and bingo
red light on perm
(bottom left as veiwed from sd card appature)
and green light flashing middle top leftish !
didnt think it would be a dodgy cable as its been runing daily for 10 days
and as GPS dongle flashing like a good un !
tried paw in the aircraft using self powered battery last week and all good
would be better if contacts were more visible on skydemon
perhaps flahing "red" reg/a/c would be great
but im sure you're working with Skydemon on this
Great product
thanks guys

Hi Tony,
most cables have a voltage drop across them, what can happen is that a temporary brown out
causes the circuitry in the dongles to reset - and get into a bad state.
It can appear that the unit is still OK, but all you are seeing is the GPS dongle happily receiving data
glad it was sorted.
(BTW are you Tony sharing the same hangar as me at Long Marston ?)
Thx

Will do Tony. Likewise come to mine but it's pretty short!

would be better if contacts were more visible on skydemon
I suggested to Tim that he could put in the option of a white box under the contact info (reg, ID) to improve the contrast, but he doesn't want to apparently as it might blot out too much of the underlying map I think.
Would be nice though... :D

Paul,
At Lee/Tim's request, I tested an 'Android' beta version of SD - provided at very short notice late on the Wednesday to correct the previously identified 'altitude display issue' - on my flight down to the LAA Rally last Thursday. I reported back to Lee and Tim on the Friday morning that his 'repair' appears to have corrected that fault. During discussion, Tim expressed concern about the readability of the 'Relative Altitude' text on the bearingless target rings - even after increasing the text size, which I was delighted to hear as I still find the 'improved' text difficult to read in an open cockpit. Having considered the options (including your proposal for a white background), Tim decided to further increase the text size for relative altitude on the bearingless rings - giving this 'priority' over the 'Reg' (he initially wanted to 'lose' the 'Reg' completely but accepted my case for retaining it, though with lower priority). IIRC Tim also said he was going to link the relative altitude text to other SD text fonts to make them all simultaneously 'user adjustable' in his next release. He has I understand also 'slimmed down' the thickness of the bearingless rings a bit to reduce the potential to obstruct underlying detail especially when they change to the smaller 'Alert' and 'Danger' sizes.
Following Tim's work with us at the Rally, I now have the latest iOS SD beta which I am still trying to find flight time to test properly. I am however confident that this will resolve the text readability issues.

Excellent, but it's not so much the text size that I find a problem (with the bearingless or the proper targets) but the contrast with the underlying map, depending on what you have selected and the colour scheme. If you deselect all ground features it's great, but if you have them all selected, it's very difficult to see the text at a glance.
-
I haven't used PAW in the air as yet, only via tablet and pc. I can see the issue from both sides some lack of clarity from the text and the possibility of obstructing map features behind it.
Would it be possible I wonder to have either
a) the text in higher contrast if the alert is within a distance set by the user dependent on individual needs and/or
b) the text alternates on and off, say on for 2 secs and off for 2
The latter may be too confusing I suppose but personally I don't think I'll be too bothered by the reg of the plane I haven't become visual with yet and which is getting closer.

Hi Paul / Sean,
Got a 'new' Beta from SkyDemon this morning, so begged leave of absence from my Missus from house-clearing for a couple of hours (father-in-law has moved into a care home) and went testing (albeit on the ground near Edinburgh Airport). Display of aircraft in the new version of SkyDemon is SIGNIFICANTLY better. Relative altitude now takes 'priority' position and is much bigger and bolder. To maintain a balance, Aircraft Reg / Callsign has been moved 'below' the relative altitude and is slightly smaller, but still readable. New version should hopefully be released later this week.

Thanks Peter,
Sounds good.

Used the new version of Sky Demon for a flight yesterday, and yes, the large numbers are significantly better.
A bit better contrast with the background would be even better still! ;D
-
Hi Paul,
You can also increase the size further (up to 1.4x) in flight only, unfortunately (unless anyone knows diferent) by going to 'Setup/Instruments/Text Size' from the SkyDemon icon, though this also increases the size of the compass rose and altitude/ground speed, etc. boxes - which unfortunately obscures more of the map. Personally I haven't found this necessary since trial long the new version. I can aways ask Tim to revisit, but let's give this version a chance first.

On the iOS version text size is adjusted by touching the 'Mapping' symbol bottom right of the screen. At the foot of the pop up there in a gadget to allow you to control text size. This works on the traffic labels as well as background text, and is available in both planning and mapping modes.

Must have missed that option. Thanks for that Graham. ;)
