Title: connecting Trig TT21 to PilotAware

Can anyone help with the connecting of PilotAware with the trig transponder with up to date firmware installed 
I have the two wires from the Trig unit( GPS position in and ground) where do they connect  on the raspberry pi ?

You need a USB to serial converter, one with a PL2303 chipset or an FTDI chipset. Get one with RS232 levels.

The TX Out and GND on the DB9 connector will connect to the transponder.

OK how about a step by step guide with pictures for us idiots?
 I can strip and reassemble a GPMG,SLR,SA80 in the dark. I have rebuilt engines from a box of bits that then compete at a national level. I have even managed to stop smoking, But talk of PL2303 and FDTI with RS232 fill me with dread. I feel as if I have concussion. Please release me from this torment.
 I have mode S. I bought a lead from Maplins. What do I do with it?

fair comment it would help to be sure

I just need help on which pin to use on the usb is it D+ or the D- along with the ground ?

Hi Mark

You cannot connect the usb directly to the transponder.
As Paul mentioned, you need a USB to RS232 converter,

Then from the RS232 connector. Tap off the TXD and GND signals
And connect to the RXD and GND on the transponder

There are some references on the forum, I will havd a search

I understand that and have the following ordered from Farnell ( well I hope I do )

USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT-0.0 CABLE, USB A - RS232, SERIAL CONVERTOR

part number

USB-RS232-WE-1800-BT-0.0

this will give me four wires

power  -not required
ground - required connection to trig ground
which of the other do I need to connect to for the GPS in wire from the trig unit ?

Assuming this is the data sheet for the cable you have... http://www.farnell.com/datasheets/814051.pdf

Page 7 shows which colour wire does what, you have more than 4 wires available.  The cable converts USB signals from the PilotAware ( 4 wires, Pwr, Gnd, D+, and D-) to RS232 signals that the transponder needs, has lots more signals, but in this instance only two are needed, Gnd and Receive Data (RD). 

Farnell Cable      Transponder Serial Port
Wire 1 (GND)     GND Pin
Wire 4 (TXD)RX Data Pin

This is on the assumption that the cables go like this...

PilotAware -> Farnell USB to Serial Cable -> Trig Serial/GPS in port

A "standard" serial port looks like the image attached, is this what the Trig has?  If so then Pin 2 is the RD (Receive Data pin).

Looking at the installation manual for the Trig

It seems that they have a larger 25 pin connector on the back that does all sorts, as seen on Page 13.  So it looks like it should be...

Farnell Cable      Transponder 25 pin connector
Wire 1 (GND)     GND Pin 4
Wire 4 (TXD)GPS Position in pin 5
