Title: Release 20180520
Post by: Kevin W on May 29, 2018, 03:08:30 pm
http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/topic,1270.0.html

So I have 20180520 up and running, GDL90 to SkyDemon working, UAT RX seems to be there (DUMP978 : 978/netcat Start message) but no UAT Wx received yet - I need to fly South for that one - hopefully will get to test that in a few days time.

Thanks to Lee and the team for the continued great work!

Cheers
Kev

P.S. Number of UAT TX stations is increasing - https://www.uavionix.com/blog/uat-in-the-uk-part-iii/

P.P.S Lots of info about how UAT and SkyDemon interact in this thread - https://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=106968&start=105

Just for the record, in case anyone else's sees this thread and wants to give GDL90 a go, I want to be really clear that with GDl90 you currently get *No* reporting of bearingless traffic.   So no range rings, no mode C or S traffic warnings via your navigation software. (You can still get them from audio warnings direct from the PilotAware).

GDL90 doesnt have a specific way of communicating bearingless targets and hence Skydemon doesnt know how to expect the data.  Hopefully that can change in the future with an agreed (informal or otherwise) addition to the standard.

Cheers

Are you using two SDRs Kevin? If so, which ones?

I have two "normal" ones in my Rosetta and they work ok, but they get a little warm!

Hi Paul

Yes 2 x 'normal' sdr's.  I have ordered 2 of the rtl-sdr low power v2's as they seem to get some good reviews for both noise floor and power consumption.  Will take a while to get here though.

When its available the upgrade kit will use Low power RTL SDR's. We are waiting for the cable samples. The plan is to start off with a DIY only upgrade for the IT literate to install.

Also to publicise this as a formalised upgrade seems a bit like selling snake oil when there are few stations about and only in the south. So this will be a soft release.

Also with the fact that you cannot currently have weather and ModeC/S on sky demon is understandable to you technically literate folks but it wont be to the majority and we don't want to appear to be selling something that is flakey.

I'm afraid its a universal truth but people dont read instructions.    >:(

Where did you get your splitter cable from Kevin?

Will be interested to see how you get on once in range of a UAT station.
