A club member kindly pointed out that there is a new software update 20180129. I promptly installed it.
I can find the update, but I have searched around and I can't find a page which tells me what changes have been made.
The PAW update page
http://www.pilotaware.com/software-update/
states
Latest Software release
20170721
Could someone point me to the page that tells me what changes have been made in 20180129.
Thanks
Chris

Same question... they say it is some improvements including better mode CS detection but no details really
-
Thanks a.alexeev.p
Good of you to reply.
No big changes then.
I haven't flown with it yet, it was grey, wet and windy here. :(
Cheers

actually a lot of improvements in the Mode C/S detection
But too difficult to fully explain
Also many improvements in WiFi connectivity
Thx

I've upgraded and will see how it goes ... more testing in the air over the next few days ...

Can someone give me a link to where the new software is?
All I can find is 2017 information, and no link to a download page.
http://www.pilotaware.com/software-update
But this just gives a pdf of installation instructions, and some info on the 2017 update.
I was looking for the USB download version.
Thanks,

Software Upgrade by USB Memory Stick.
To make software upgrade easy, from release 20160820, new software will be available to upgrade PilotAware by USB memory stick. To do this download the new upgrade file (pilotaware.pgp) from the pilotaware.lode.co.uk (http://pilotaware.lode.co.uk) website onto a clean USB memory stick formatted to FAT32 and with no other files on it, as these may get corrupted in certain configurations.

.
Ah, found it:
http://pilotaware.lode.co.uk
It has been loading for an hour now. How do I know when it is finished?
Addendum: Ok, it was finished, but did not tell me.
I think the iPad wifi had slipped back to my house wifi, and so the PAW could not give me a message of completion.
Thanks,

.
I see (hear) that the audio commands are much quicker than before.
That is an improvement...

When I do an update, I just watch the Wi-Fi, when it comes back up, I reconnect then click on the home page button.
-
I also heard a rumour that there was an update from a random comment in one of the threads. This very forum seems to give the impression that the latest software is 20170619 (top right of this screen) I seem to remember that the user manual says that updates will be promulgated on this forum, but obviously not.

ah yes, I was wondering when somebody was going to spot the deliberate mistake ;)
fixed
I seem to remember that the user manual says that updates will be promulgated on this forum, but obviously not.
The updates are listed here
http://forum.pilotaware.com/index.php/board,4.0.html
Emails are sent to forum members, and licensed owners, but unfortunately our email ISP is throttling, so we have lots of emails in a backlog I'm afraid

Thanks for posting Jamie, and for anyone else's benefit
These messages are monitoring the interfaces and indicating when it appears that the interface has not received any data, or the data is invalid.
Are you operating indoors or behind pilkington glass ?
This will usually degrade GPS signals considerably
The logging is generally quite verbose, and is really overly noisy
For system health status please refer to the web homepage where the red/amber/green column indicators are located

Hi
Just downloaded the latest software.Home page now says "PilotAware version (20180129) License expired". I don't think it was quite ready to be renewed and I haven't had a reminder. Also homepage shows pressure altitude box as red. I've tried rebooting etc with no success. Any suggestions.
Many thanks in anticipation

Hi Go to page 38 of the PilotAware operating and software instructions and follow the Ethernet method.
Hope this helps. I've just done it.
Dave
-
Dave,
How did you update the software? If you did it by USB stick your licence details will carry forward, but if you did a complete reinstall you need to re-enter your licence key. You can retrieve your licence key from http://PilotAware.lode.co.uk by submitting your unit’s MAC address.
Could that be the problem?
Regards
Peter
-
Dave,
Ethernet is the best option for older systems (running any version older than 20160829 xwhich introduced the USB stick reader). For newer versions, USB stick is by far the quickest and most effective method.

Thank you Peter. I've just re entered my license key with no effect. I installed the new software using the Ethernet way. I was going to use USB stick but the lode.com site said I needed a new app which I didn't understand.

If you used lode.com that might have been the problem. The licensing and downloads site is....
http://pilotaware.lode.co.uk Note: NO www
After updating, you need to make sure you are correctly logged back onto your PilotAware WiFi hotspot then log into 192.168.1.1, but be careful to make sure the tablet isn’t using a cached URL such as 192.168.1.1/install.cgi or similar or it won’t log back on properly. Also after entering the licence key you must remember to save it at the bottom of the Configure Screen. Try powering down and rebooting.

Hi Peter, many thanks I think it's sorted now. Am I correct in thinking the pressure altitude box in the home page will turn from red to green when I've re installed all the aerials/ dongles
Regards Dave
-
Morning Dave,
It should do - the ADSB TRX and GPS lights will also be red until you replace the dongles and the unit re-establishes its position (GPS), then TRX (which won’t work until the unit’s position has been established) and finally ADSB when it sees traffic.
If the pressure altitude light doesn’t go green, you will need to open the PAW case and check that the Bridge board (the one the thicker (P3I) antenna attaches to) hasn’t come loose where it attaches to the Raspberry Pi ‘GPIO pins’. The black connector block should be fully seated onto the pins along the length of the board. If you can see a gap gently press the two boards together to make sure they are correctly seated. You don’t need to take the boards out of the case to do this. Replace the lid and screws, tightening them carefully - they are only going into plastic so don’t overtighten them - stop when you feel resistance. Hopefully this won’t be necessary, but this would be the most likely cause of the baro not working.

Software update done via Ethernet cable. Seems to be working ok :)

Updated via the usb drive route and completed without issues....

Thanks guys, good to know all went well.

After updating I'm seeing
error=1 error_msg="Command not Registered"
Under UPTIME on the home page which I don't recall seeing before. Tried rebooting but still present, any ideas?
thanks

Hi Gareth,
Despite the ‘Error’ message, your PAW seems to be running fine with a full set of green ‘lights’ on the Home Screen - I presume (from the Tx=1 in the TRX line) that you had it configured as a Rx-only base station when you took the screen grab.
Although I can’t say exactly what the error message means, I notice that you are still running a very early version of the Raspberry Pi Linux Software (Kernel=3.18.7-v7+), which might be an issue if you didn’t install the ‘Hot Fix’ updates (20170706 and 20170721) to the previous 20170619 update (to allow UDP connectivity to run on Linux Kernel Versions prior to 4.4 and allow 3/4G phones and tablets to continue to use 3/4G when connected by WiFi to PilotAware) - though I would have thought that the most recent update would have automatically brought your system right up to date. Hopefully Lee will confirm when he comes back on.

Peter

I thought the updates did not update the Kernal? IIRC Lee asked us to wipe and rebuild when the Kernal version was critical, that was a while back now and may have been to allow USB stick updates.
-
Ian,
You are correct, the updates don't update the Kernel. If you remember, when Lee introduced UDP messaging in version update 20170619, this would initially only work with Kernels 4.4.xx or later, so 'Hotfix' update 20170706 was issued to allow UDP to work with earlier Kernels. I assume that the latest update includes the previous patches, so would fix that issue automatically, just not sure. Hopefully lee will respond and clarify the position.
Of course the error message may be something else entirely.
Best Regards
Peter

Hi Gareth,
This is actually benign.
The OS you are running is quite early, and the application is requesting information about voltage drops which is not present in that version of the OS.
I will remove this error message in the next release.
If you want to be able to see this information, you will need to do a full install of PilotAware (details in operating instructions), rather than the incremental update - which is just the PilotAware application
Thx
Lee

Thanks all, I'd not appreciated the need to update the operating system, just kept installing the new PilotAware update whenever one was released.
Yes, my device is configured as a base station and sat on the window sill most of the time when it's not in the aeroplane.
Fresh install from scratch on another SD card seems to have done the trick and I've now got a message alternating between throttled=0x5005 and throttled=0x5000 (whatever that might mean!)
thanks again
Gareth
-
Gareth,
It's to do with internal governing of the system and data exchange.

Hi Gareth,
That is pretty important, what it is detecting is an undervoltage issue
I will add more info to the warnings in the next release, but basically, these are individual bitmasks (techie speak)
0x00000001 under-voltage
0x00000002 arm frequency capped
0x00000004 currently throttled
0x00010000 under-voltage has occurred
0x00020000 arm frequency capped has occurred
0x00040000 throttling has occurred
0x50000 means that undervoltage was detected, and throttling occured at some time
0x50005 means that undervoltage is detected, and throttling is applied
So this sounds like the RPI is detecting an undervoltage condition and is applying CPU Throttling
Can you please fully describe the power supply setup and connections ?
I notice you are not using the standard RTLSDR and have used a NooElec Nano 3, do you know the power requirements for this device ?
Thx
Lee
-
Thanks Lee - the issue turned out to be a poor generic 75cm USB extension cable (how many times have you heard that?!). Swapped to the usual Anker Powercore 20100 battery pack that I use when flying, I get throttled=0x0. For home use I usually plug the PilotAware into an Anker USB Charger 4.8A/24W 2-Port USB Wall Charger. Replaced the generic 75cm USB extension lead needed to reach the bay window with a heavy duty Syncwire cable (http://amzn.eu/5s9R9oI) and that also gives me throttled=0x0.
I swapped the standard RTLSDR for a NooElec Nano 3 a few weeks ago when I rehoused my PilotAware in a Stratux case to try and tidy things up a bit. I've no information on its power requirements I'm afraid. I wasn't convinced the old RTLSDR was working reliably, left on continuously for days on end as ground station, sometimes it would show no ADSB traffic at all for long periods of time, and would immediately display multiple contacts on rebooting. Now I'm wondering if it was a power supply issue after all...
thanks
Gareth

Hi Gareth
A response to you but really for all who are reading this post. No matter what your problem is check the power supply and the lead first. Then check the power supply and the lead.
We have 3 years of experience and if the power supply isn’t right disperate and diverse things happen including it working sometimes.

Lee / Gareth,
As quoted in another thread by rogellis - ‘The NooElec engineer said that their dongle (the Nano 3) consumes 280 ma of power on average, or about 1.5 w’ Mine was drawing much more than that but then it ‘died’ I now have replacements but haven’t had time to run them yet - I will try tomorrow.

I’m trying to update using Ethernet cable as I did for the July update but when I click check update for the install I keep getting the attached screen come up , anyone have have an idea why
Many Thanks
-
Snoop,
Are you following the instructions to the letter, i.e. removing all dongles, connecting to the router by ethernet, powering up and leaving the unit for at least 20 minutes, then powering down again, before disconnecting from the router, reinserting your dongles (or at least the WiFi one) then powering up, reconnecting your tablet and only THEN - checking to see if any updates have appeared? If not it won't work!
If you have already updated to any software version newer than 20160820, the best and by far the quickest method to update is by USB stick - again just follow the instructions from Page 38 on in the Operating Instructions.

Peter

Hi,
This message indicates PilotAware is unable to access an update via the internet or a USB memory stick
Could you please post a screenshot of the following pages when attempting to perform the update
- Home Page
- Configure Page
thx
Lee

Hi Lee
Tried again as per instructions but still the same screen comes up.
2 screen shots as requested
Thanks

Hi Snoopy, as per Peters post the screenshots show that you have not removed the dongles, in particular the Wi-Fi dongle as the poor unit is confused as to which of the network connections to use. Take out the WiFi dongle and connect to the PAW from a PC via the LAN cable.
Because this was confusing people the USB Pen drive is now the prefered update method. It also allows you to update a fixed PAW installation where there may be no internet or LAN access.

Hi Keith & Lee,
I followed the link in the email I received to announcement of the new download version, and many thanks for including in the release announcement a link to the download instruction - I'm bound to have forgotten how to follow it since last time!
One minor observation, following the instructions http://www.pilotaware.com/wp-content/uploads/Latest-Operating-Instructions-.pdf (http://www.pilotaware.com/wp-content/uploads/Latest-Operating-Instructions-.pdf) on p38, the link to the pilotaware download is incorrect. The document has http://www.pilotaware.com/wp-content/uploads/pilotaware.lode.co.uk whereas it should of course be https://pilotaware.lode.co.uk/ (https://pilotaware.lode.co.uk/)
Looking forward to trying it out. I hear mention that the audio alerts are quicker which would be a good thing.
Cheers, Geoffrey
