Might sound a stupid question, but I presume the wifi dongle is connected?
Thx
Lee

Yes and yes.

How to win friends and influence people ::) Given some of the blatantly obvious things some people do and don't do, Lee's question was far from stupid and was merely giving you the opportunity to check something that others have not done in the past. Perhaps one 'yes' would encourage the help you seek.

I have read that book, by Dale Carnegie. Clearly my attempt at humour didn’t work. Perhaps it might be best not read too much into things in future? You know what they say about emails & I’m sure the same is true here? Do the admin people on this forum work for PAW? John

I'm 99% sure Lee is Mr PAW :)

Using those type of powers supplies is not recommended, especially if using the apple lead. You require a good PSU with 2A output.
It would be worth trying an Anker type battery with the PAW supplied lead as per page 7 of the manual :-

Hi, yes, thanks. I’ve just done that (Anker supply, promising 2.4A, plugged into the car) but it’s just the same, even after 15 minutes. Checked everything multiple times. Red, green alternating LEDs are flashing. There is some v slight warmth to the WiFi dongle some it’s getting some power. GPS dongle is flashing green, so I presume it’s happy. Adaptor for the skinny aerial is warm, so that’s powered up too.

Where abouts are you? One of us could lend you our Wifi dongles to try swapping them.
-
Paul, that’s very kind of you to offer. I’m on Teesside. I’m presuming PAW will respond with a solution tomorrow, so unless by any long shot you are close, let’s see what they say. thanks, John

Out of interest I removed and refitted the wifi dongle with the Paw live.
The wifi dongle does not work.
After disconnecting and connecting the power all working fine.
The same applies to the adsb dongle.
Maybe worth trying.

Eric, thanks, I’ve just tried that, but it still doesn’t work. I must say, i was a bit relieved, I dont fancy adding that to my prefilight checks. I assume one of the bits of kit is a duffer so I’ll contact. PAW in the morning. Regards, John

Hi John, I'm not one of the core team but I think it may be a good idea to email Dave Styles at PilotAwareHardware@gmail.com. He is the person who ships the parts out.
Since the units are tested before shipping, I am a little surprised you have got this issue.
If there is any further delay, I have a WiFi Dongle that Lee lent to me for testing. I can check it's working and post to you if you wish. Just PM me your address.
Cheers
Ian

Ian, thanks. I’m sure they will sort me out. I’ll pm you if I need to take up your king offer, John

Sorry, I'm in Surrey, and heading off to Wales shortly so unable to assist locally personally!

John,
Sorry to hear you are having problems getting your unit started up. Initial startup issues are generally due to ineffective or inadequate power supply - the bit outwith PilotAware’s control - often in the early days due to a faulty or inadequately rated power supply or cable - or failure to run the unit where the GPS dongle can see sufficient satellites to get a solid position fix (e.g. indoors). Although problems do occur with the WiFi connection, it is very unusual to see these at initial boot, which is why Lee will have asked the ‘apparently obvious’ question just to make sure - you would be surprised at how ‘obvious’ many of the answers to faults prove to be!
The single ‘solid red’ LED on the end of the unit is for the power supply and would suggest that this is ‘OK’ - solid red means a constant supply. An intermittent fast-flashing green next to this is the ‘drive activity’ LED which indicates that the unit is reading from the ‘disc’. This normally stops flashing after boot up is complete. After boot-up, the ‘Bridge’ board should show 4 ‘greens’ flashing in a regular sequence, so the fact that you are reporting a mix of flashing greens and red(s) would indicate that something isn’t getting a lock. Unfortunately, the easiest way to determine ‘what’ is from the Home Screen - which you can only see by logging on via the WiFi Hotspot. :-\
You say you have a screenshot of the initial boot available. It would be useful if you could post this as it may help eliminate or identify alternative causes, such as possible software corruption, though swapping to another WiFi dongle as suggested by Paul and Ian is probably the quickest and simplest ‘test/fix’ if Dave can get a replacement WiFi dongle out to you through the Christmas rush.
One way or other it will be sorted, please bear with us.
Regards
Peter

Thanks to everyone who replied over the weekend. Dave Styles at PAW is sending me a replacement, John.
-
Peter, What's your email address please? (Screen shot was too big to upload - although I have now emailed it to Dave so you might also get it from him), Thanks, John
-
Just to say thanks to everyone who responded. Dave Styles sent me a replacement Wifi dongle and with that installed it all started working straight away, John

Thanks for the update John, glad we got there in the end.
