Been out of the loop since last November due to having a u/s aircraft and work commitments. But today, updated my license key, and updated the software.

I read that there is supposed to be a facility where the PAW doesn't advertise as a router but can't see how this is configured and looking at the Wifi setting on my iPad, it appears to still be saying the router is the PAW 192.168.1.1 which also seems to stop my using Bluetooth to connect to my iPhone hotspot.

Sorry if this has been dealt with before but can't see anything obvious.

General Discussion / No ADS-B reception? Check your antenna plug!
« on: October 01, 2015, 11:31:24 am »
Was just fiddling with my PA unit and I have 4 DVB-T dongles from China. One I couldn't get any ADS-B reception so thought I had a dud dongle. I was testing each one with its supplied antennas so transferred the dongle over to my 'airborne' PA unit which has a small helical for ADS-B and it worked.

So duff antenna methinks ... Check to make sure the cable is not broken in the base - nope. Scratches head. Looks at the moulded on plug and .... See below! The plug has no centre pin fitted!

So if you don't get a signal, check the plug as there could be a few out there with duff plugs fitted!

General Discussion / Multiple iPad connections possible?
« on: September 09, 2015, 10:10:52 am »
I don't know if this has been covered anywhere else but can't find anything relevant.

Is it (or should it) be possible to connect multiple SkyDemon 'clients' to a single PilotAware box?

I tried it but it fails to connect on the second attachment. I am assuming the 'Air Connect Key' which is set at 6000 needs another one setup in PilotAware?

My scenario is that both me and my co-owner who regularly fly our Pup together, both use SD, and the PNF can keep an eye on the route, things ahead etc. So having two SD clients attached to the PilotAware box would be really handy as the PNF can also then keep an eye on traffic.

Obviously only ONE SD client/iPad should be providing the GPS location data but surely there is nothing that should prevent a second (or more) clients from reading the GPS data, and handy if this is a non-cellular iPad.

If this can be done, can someone indicate how. If not, perhaps it could be an additional 'licensing' thing if/when it goes 'commercial', so the main box has a single user license and an additional user(s) can be added and perhaps configured either via the app or via the web server as the existing 'license' is.

General Discussion / Where do you mount yours?
« on: September 03, 2015, 08:32:26 pm »
Be interested to know where in the aircraft you mount your box?

I own a Beagle Pup - there isn't a huge amount of real-estate especially on the coaming, and particularly for long antennae. To this end, I have ordered a few different sorts of stumpy 'correctly tuned' antennae, one for the 860Mhz band as the one supplied with the ARF is way too long, and one to replace the pathetic and incorrectly tuned DVB-T antenna which I am intending to either rewire the module to fit inside the case, or attach via an MCX to SMA adapter.

We could do with perhaps getting one of the Chinese manufacturers to make a pair of correctly tuned self-adhesive 'patch antennas', one for the 860Mhz band and the other for 1090Mhz which could be affixed to the sides of the front screen in an out-of-eyeline position. Perhaps less of an issue for a non-EASA aircraft as these could fit external aerials but doubt that would go down too well on something like a Pup, Cessna or PA28.

General Discussion / Skydemon and external BadElf Pro+ GPS
« on: September 01, 2015, 02:43:39 pm »
I'm still waiting for some of the bits to arrive from China and finally managed to source an ARF board as WirelessThings are out at the moment. So don't have a built working unit yet....

I was trying to get my head round how the GPS data is derived using Skydemon as the manual states for running with FLARM:

You will find the options for connecting to the Air Connect device in the Setup menu under Connectivity Options > FLARM, and once a connection has been established just tap the Go Flying button in the top right-hand corner of the toolbar and choose ‘Use FLARM’. A GPS fix will be obtained through your FLARM unit rather than your tablet/phone's GPS chipset
or external Bluetooth GPS receiver, and SkyDemon's GPS navigation
features will continue to function as normal, but with the addition
of traffic data.

I use an external Bad Elf Pro+ GPS via Bluetooth as it's a more accurate and reliable data source than the in-built GPS. So if SD no longer takes data from the Location Services data stream does the P3i app grab this data from the iOS 'location services', pipe it to the PilotAware box which then sends this data back via the Wifi hotspot along with the PilotAware confliction data?

Sorry if this is a daft question but just want to understand how the GPS data gets to (and from) the PilotAware system from either the I-device or an external GPS.

Mark.
