Technical Support / Re: Help Connecting to Dynon skyview
« on: November 12, 2022, 04:29:15 pm »
Hi Bob,

I definitely read Russ's post before I posted (and sent him a PM, but no joy). I understand that I need two FTDI USB to serial connectors (one for traffic from PAW to HDX and one for GPS from HDX to PAW). But he does say he wired it in the 'exact same way' as traffic, to get GPS from HDX to PAW. That doesn't make sense to me as the orange wire transmits RS232 (from PAW to HDX) but we're receiving GPS into the PAW and, therefore, I would have thought you'd need the yellow 'receive' wire.

My reason for asking about both for GPS is sometimes these things 'handshake' to make sure components are present and, for that reason, I thought you might need Tx and Rx. As you say, there's probably no harm in connecting both......unless someone can say otherwise.

I am in the throes of designing my panel upgrade and would like to connect a Dynon SkyView HDX to my PAW, both to receive traffic into the HDX and receive GPS into the PAW.

Traffic, all understood and well documented. GPS from HDX to PAW, not quite so well documented but there's still a lot of info around. I just wanted to clarify one point, really.

I'll use another USB to serial converter to connect to a separate serial port on the HDX for GPS. So one serial port will have traffic IN from the PAW and another serial port will have GPS position OUT to the PAW. I know on the traffic that the orange Tx wire is used (in addition to a ground) but on the GPS connection do you just have just the yellow Rx wire or do you need Rx and Tx to the GPS (in addition to ground)? I suspect it is only the Rx but I just wanted to check.

Thank you.

can I compare what ADS-B traffic I 'see' in the cockpit, with what ADS-B traffic the Atom ground stations are seeing (which hopefully is everything)?

I addition to what Peter has said, comparing what an ATOM station sees and what you might see is not really a fair comparison. For instance, I might not see a low level aircraft south of the Isle Of Wight because the Downs get in the way of his transmission to my antenna. You, on the other hand might see him, as you nip along the South Coast at 1500'. You are now 'better' than my ATOM station.

Likewise, I have an 11dB antenna on top of my house, while you probably have a 5dB antenna in your aircraft. In theory I would see many more contacts than you and you would feel very disappointed (since I am now 'better' than you), if comparing numbers and distances, whereas, in reality, your aircraft is seeing all the ADSB transmitters within XX NMs of you and allowing you to avoid bumping into them.

I can see you're trying to compare your maximum with a theoretical maximum but I don't think using ATOM stations is the way to go and, quite frankly, if you're seeing all the stuff that's anywhere near you then it is a pretty pointless exercise anyway. It doesn't matter that you can't see BA 123 at 350nm away but I can.

Presumably it's got something to do with iGrid, since that's the only thing that's really changed.

Haha, I know you're at Sandown as I did the screenshots on my PAW for your aircraft's LAA PAW and ADSB 'evidence'  :)

I'm in Wellow, so get a pretty good view of the people nipping around the Needles. Sandown has its own ATOM station (even if Dan doesn't seem to know anything about it  ;D) and there's one at a farm along Military Road. That one is more for the paragliders along the Downs but is useful for transmitting their lightweight EC over the Grid. I think Bembridge seem to have taken theirs down but there's still very good coverage between the stations at Hayling Island, Thorney Island, Selsey and the IOW.

The 60km restriction is only a limit on ADSB displayed on Vector. My ATOM station will see ADSB up to 200nm away but it will still only show a maximum of 60km on the Vector diagram. The same with your aircraft. It may be seen by an ATOM station 100km away but will still show as 60km being the max range on the Vector diagram.

The ATOM stations do transmit on PAW free and receive on PAW, Flarm and ADSB. The diagrams I showed were my ATOM station and the ranges it saw ADSB (artificially restricted to 60km), PAW and then CAP1391. It was to demonstrate the fact that, even though my ATOM station sees ADSB a LONG way away, it still only shows a max of 60kms.

And the SE one.....more than 60 seconds later AND 1995 picture size restrictions  ???

Another....because of the ridiculous 1995 picture posting size restrictions  ::)

ATOM Stations are the same........AND why not to have a SkyEcho  ;D

ADSB is artificially restricted to 60kms to save drowning the world in red.

You only need to wire up the orange and black wires, since you're just receiving the PAW Tx into your Skyview.

UNLESS we're able to transmit GPS info from the Skyview to the PAW now. I don't think I've read a conclusive answer to that question.

Technical Support / Re: Mobile Dongle instead of iPhone

You can set up a 4G dongle and use it as a hotspot for iGrid. You will still have to plug a WIFI adapter into your PAW, so the PAW can connect to your 4G dongle.

I have one and it's great that I don't have to muck around with phone hotspots. Just recently I couldn't get anything through iGrid but I discovered, yesterday, that GiffGaff have not topped up the sim card as they should have done. Small wonder there's no data when I haven't paid for it  :)

I have varying results. Sometimes it works better than my iPhone and other times it doesn't. It's mounted underneath my seats and has a clear view of the ground etc through fabric.

Lee advised NOT to use the PAW USBs to power the dongle. They can take a bit of electricity and that might upset your PAW. Best to use a separate source, as I have.

Once your 4G dongle connects to iGrid (via the WIFI adapter in your PAW) it will allow the weather/rainfall to be displayed and it will enhance the traffic you see.

I could have chosen to use the second USB for the Skyview GPS feed, but chose to remain with separate Skyview and PAW GPS feeds for redundancy.

I think this idea has merit and is certainly part of my thinking for a panel re-design.

Are they really  :-[ Well that's a bit embarrassing, as I thought they were receiving the 4G. No wonder they didn't make any difference  :(

Hi Peter,

This is the dongle I bought:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B2Q5QQN7/ref=pe_27063361_485629781_TE_item

I had hoped to run it off a USB port in my PAW but Lee recommended that I didn't, so I didn't. It's running off a Charge 4 slot.

So it's really just sitting there, blaring away as a 4G WIFI hotspot and showing up very well on every device I have.......on the ground.

It shows well on the PAW Network page and connects immediately to the Hotspot section. Unlike me iPhone I don't need to enable Hotspot etc.

As I said above, the 4G stuff seems okay and connects nicely to PAW. The only thing that is slow to sort itself out is the Internet being piped to my iPad via the PAW router. Once it connects it works well, it just takes its merry time doing so.

I'm going for some punishment in the sim over the next couple of days but hope to see how it all works out after that.
