Hi Peter,

I've now sent an email to the support address you mentioned, so I'll wait to hear from Ash.

This is what it looks like in situ. I've had it there for the past two years, either powered from a 12v socket (using an Anker adaptor) or from a PowerCore brick. Until this winter I've used the cable you supplied. The latest wiring hasn't been used 'in anger' yet.

Robin.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your reply.

The photos above were taken with the PAW unit attached in the plane, which is a Mk2 Kitfox with a clear top. The PAW unit is velco'd to a ledge I've contructed at the junction of a couple of roof tubie members, although for the photo I had to hold it slightly away from its usual position for the photo to 'work'. The cable length is approx 1m. There is no strain on the microUSB socket as the wiring/plug are supported by cable ties to a steel tube. I get the same power errors regardless of which lead I use, wether it be the one supplied by you or other heavy duty ones acquired since, and using any one of the various power supplies you recommend.

I am tending to believe that there is an internal problem with the Pi - power socket or otherwise. I think I'll take up your suggestion of returning to you for repair - at least that would eliminate one uncertainty.

Regarsds,

Robin.

Technical Support / Ongoing power problems

Ever since I purchased my Rosetta several years ago, I have always had apparant power supply problems. Not only has the browser home page shown 'Volt=Warning' and 'Throttle=Warning' almost continuously since then but in addition I don't think I've ever completed a flight without the unit temporarily 'losing' the GPS signal at some point. I have always assumed the GPS failures have been caused by insufficient 'power'.

Over the years I have tried to fix this issue by upgrading the various power supply components - heavy duty usb cables, Anker PowerDrive socket adaptor, and PowerCore power pack, all to no avail.

Over last winter I went for the nuclear option. As the attached photos show, I now have a Harkwood 2 port charger, and power cables that would not look out of place powering up Sizewell B.

Unfortunately, as the attached shot of the browser home page shows, the power is still not right. I haven't flown the plane yet this year - these photos were taken in a shed, hence the lack of GPS satelites and an incorrect time. Could someone please suggest what I could try next? Could it perhaps be a hardware problem internal to the RPi?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards,

Robin.

Hi Peter, All,

The 'upload has failed please retry' error is not the same error as either SGS66 or I have reported.

In my/our case, the Updater doesn't even get to start uploading the file(s) from the iPad to PAW, because the Updater>update page claims that there is no connection to PAW and has repainted the Step2 icon red. It makes this claim even though at the same time, both the Traffic and Status pages of the Updater are communicating with PAW in real time.

Clearly something is allowing some parts of the Update app to communicate with PAW, whilst at the same time blocking other parts.

I have tried deleting the app, re-installing it and reattempting Step1 - Download new firmware - (on an iPad running iOS 13.7)

I have tried all of the above on iPhone running iOS 14

Robin

Hi Peter,

I am updating from 20190621

The Updater hasn't locked up - all other screens are updating in real time.

I didn't try to move between screens during the process. On the Update screen, I clicked on Step1, which turned green after it had downloaded the new firmware (a message box informed me that it had downloaded v 20200906). I then exited the Updater app (without quitting it) in order to change my wifi connection from the internet to PAW. When PAW wifi was reconnected I went back to the Update screen on the Updater and clicked on Step 2. The result is attached as a screenshot.

All the other Updater screens are still updating normally in real time. I mention this so that you are aware that the rest of the app is connecting and communicating normally with PAW.

I have also tried deleting the app, re-downloading and starting again, with the same result.

I also have an iPhone, so I have tried it on that, but with exactly the same result. I did not try to use the Updater app on both devices at the same time. I did not connect to PAW wifi with both devices at the same time.

Regards,

Robin

Technical Support / iOS Firmware Updater problem
« on: September 25, 2020, 12:17:37 pm »
Hi all,

I have downloaded the iOS Firmware Updater to my iPad, downloaded the latest firmware upgrade to it, and then connected the iPad to PAW's wifi, all successfully.

The PAW Firmware Updater (v1.7.5) Status display shows that it is connected to PAW, showing all the expected usual info, and the Traffic page shows aircraft  coming and going from view.

However, 'Step 2 - Upload to PAW' on the Update page repeatedly tells me I don't have a connection to PAW, and red text in the top left corner of the screen repeats the message, even though the Status and Traffic pages are properly updating in real time.

The Updater Config page shows empty fields for Host ID, Licence No, Expires (the licence actually expires in Aug 2021). Status field shows "Offline, please connect to networks"

A browser on the iPad can access the PAW webpages via 192.168.1.1.

Please advise. Ta.

Hi Lee,

Try this link:

http://cloud-wr-eu2.acronis.com/links/FA935423E5EB835993E47E714DD3900F

This is saved on one of the features of my backup software which I've not used before, so let me know if the link doesn't work.

Robin.

Hi Lee,

All my observations yesterday were done with PAW outdoors in an open space.

Unfortunately I only have one track file, which doesn't show a red flag (I don't think). It was recorded yesterday afternoon when I was getting green/blue on the internal locations services and orange on the PAW feed.

During the day yesterday while experimenting with the dongle in different sockets and before Peter informed me that the usb socket wasn't an issue, I reformatted the sd card and started again from scratch, so lost the track files up to that point.

I'd be happy to send you the  one I've got, though. Its 7MB in size. I left it running for quite a long time while it settled, and certainly wasn't watching it throughout, so there may be many different 'flag colour' combinations in the file.

Regards,

Robin.

Whoops, sorry about that.

I didn't know there were multiple ways to connect SD on an iPad to PAW:

Wifi the iPad to PAW
Tell SD to use PilotAware in SD's Setup>Third-Party-Devices
'Go Flying' in SD
Choose 'Use PilotAware' as location source from menu presented by SD

SD then tells you  its lost all its satelites (as it ditches the internal Location Services), but found x satelites (from Wifi), as it then connects to PAW.

Robin.

Hi Lee,

Sorry I should have been clearer.

SD sets a flag (coloured triangle) in the top corner of it's altitude/height readout to signify the vertical accuracy of the gps signal:

Blue: Accuracy within 50ft
Green: within 100ft
Yellow: within 150ft
Orange: within 250ft
Red: >250ft

SD is currently reporting as orange when using PAW, and green when using the iPad's internal location services.

Regards,

Robin.

It seems to be behaving a bit better this morning, though I haven't changed anything since yesterday. Just plugged it in again as before and plonked it on the table in middle of front garden.

I've attached two screenshots, one from yesterday when it was misbehaving badly and one from this morning when all appears well again. However, even this morning at the time I took today's screenshot PAW was also connected to SD, which connected ok but reported the altitude accuracy as a red triangle.

In both cases the unit was out on the front lawn in full view of sky and had been running for at least one hour.

I've also noticed over this summer that it never uses more than a few satelites, regardless of how many it reports as 'viewing'.

Regards and thanks for your assistance,

Robin

Technical Support / USB socket for GPS dongle
« on: July 08, 2019, 06:29:22 pm »
I happened to notice when I opened the rear case of my Rosetta today that the USB dongle is in the Upper Right Hand socket directly above the radio dongle, and not in the Upper Left socket as depicted and described in the manual. I don't recall ever moving it myself but I suppose I might have done.

Should I move it back to the top left? I did try but it doesn't seem to work in that socket, even if I boot up with a clean new June 2019 software sd.

It does seem to work in the top right socket, but I have often experienced multiple dropouts when coupled to SD on an iPad.

I purchased the Rosetta at Sywell last August/September, if that has any bearing on things. Perhaps the hardware at that time was configured that way.

Any advice appreciated.

Regards,

Robin.
