Technical Support / Sky Demon - GPS Lost
« on: January 11, 2018, 11:37:12 am »
Hi all,

i know this is a topic already discussed in the forum but i need to understand what's happening to my unit.
I Always had this issue and with the new release with the lighter protocol (Pilotaware instead of FLARM) i was hoping in a better result.
I Always used an Ipad Mini 2 and thought it was a problem related to that because old and slow but now i am using an iphone 7 plus which sould be faster and getting the same problem: randomly i get the "no valid GPS signal".

GPS is not the issue, i have  my PAW unit also connected through RS232 adapter to  my EKP-V and it never have GPS disconnections or issues.

I tryed all which means power reductions, wifi and BT off on all the devices on board etc. but issue is still there.

If someone have some idea is welcome

Regards

Hi,

with my I-Phone and I-Pad i had a lot of loss of gps connection issues before the update.
I have to say now with the latest PAW release and the latest SD release it works perfectly. I tested it for about 90 minutes flight and was very stable.

I will have some more longer flights in the next 2 weeks, we will see if stability is permanent.

Technical Support / Re: Ipad losing connection to PAW

Hi,

i drop in just to confirm that also with my IPAD Mini 4 happens the GPS disconnect issue.
Tried dongle change, different power settings, changed wifi name etc. etc. but it still happens, most of the times i get disconnected then no way to reconnect unless some power cycling on PAW hw.
Serial connection to my EKPV continues to work perfect while having the ipad issue.

Hi all,

@exfirepro, IOS is 10.2.1, same as you one.

@Admin, i will first try to change the wifi dongle (i have a spare one i am using in another raspberry). If i will change it will my licence be still valid or should i ask for a new one ?

Thanks

Short update, changed PAW WiFi power from 100 mW to 10mW, still getting " connection to gps lost".

@Admin: you are right, the message is that. PAW power is fed through a powerbank with a 3 Amps output (benchtested), Ipad runs on it's own battery. And yes, there are other devices running wifi, my iphone for sure.

@Paul: i will try this, first i will reduce the wifi dongle power to minimum and test again.

I'll keep you all posted on the result.

Hi, i also have  random "GPS timeout" issues with my Ipad mini and Skydemon

When i get this Skydemon error there are no other apps running on the ipad, GPS signal is ok (i have the traffic still workin on my AVMAP GPS through RS232) and WiFi is not lost. PAW and Ipad are Always running with battery power (no power from Airplane).
It happens randomly only during flight, usually within 5 to 10 minutes from airborne and then again and again and again...
It never happens if not Flying.

Suggestions are very welcome !

General Discussion / Re: AVMAP EKP V now able to receive Flarm
« on: February 18, 2017, 08:57:25 am »
Good news anyway ! It happened to me in the early 90's when i was playing with transceivers/packet radio tncs/pcs and other RS232 "toys" so i wanted to try again and ...: it works! What? I simply connected GND and TX of the USB RS232 converter to the port B of the AVMAP docking station which is supposed to be TTL and magically works. So for now i am set, if i could just configure the same port for a GPS input that would be perfect.
System tested in some hours of flight friday and saturday last week, it works perfectly.

Lee,

my question about the Raspberry serial port was intended to avoid the use of other usb devices and use the integrated one straight as it is.

Question is due because AVMAP EKP V docking station have 2 serial ports, one is rs232 standard level and the second is TTL level.

Just form my knowledge, does PAW support 2 usb2serial ports like for instance 1 with TTL levels and a second with standard RS232 levels ?

And... as far as i remember Raspberry embed a TTL levels serial, may this be also used ?

Hi Lee,

suggested config i think is perfect, one port and 2 functions would be great!

Thank you Ian!

More complicated question is: may i also use a serial connection to feed PAW wit my AVMAP GPS ?
I tried several different cockpit positions for the GMOUSE GPS but i frequently loos the signal (or at least my Ipad with SkyDemon is telling me this) so i would like to use a stable GPS receiver like the AVMAP.
At the moment the AVMAP is connected to my Dynon D100.

Thank you for your suggestions, if any  ;D

General Discussion / AVMAP EKP V now able to receive Flarm
« on: February 14, 2017, 10:37:09 pm »
Hi,

with the latet software update my AVMAP EKP V is able to receive Flarm traffic information via RS232 connection.
As far as i know my PAW is not able to send the information by RS232, am i right ?
Will be possible somehow to implement RS232 transmission of such information ? It would be a very nice function to to have the traffic also on my GPS.

Hi all,

i was wondering if someone knows how to use PAW to supply traffic information totes Avmap EKP V.
As far as I understood the EKP V is able to receive information FRO a Zaon TCAS via USB...
