General Discussion / Re: Antenna Location & GPS Input
« on: May 05, 2017, 11:46:48 am »
I've put ADS-B and GPS Antennae within the wing interior fixed by Velcro. It's standard pre-war wooden ribs and spar with Ceconite covering works fine.
My PAW Aerial is a PUC Type fixed above the Parasol Wing in centre and biased towards front of Aircraft.
All works well.

The PAW GPS signal is transferred via WiFi to iPad. The PAW is a small WiFi Server, you connect to it and then start SkyDemon after setting its Connection profile. Its all in the manual.
I say this about WiFi as 'piped' means hard wired to me. It's not.
The PAW to iOS or Android is excellent and try and set up with audio. That's the most pertinent alarm!
The only 'fly in the ointment' is the FLARM world which fights to stay separate at the moment.

Take a look at this. http://www.charge4.co.uk
I have the 2 port version installed. It works well but in your case a 4 port is available too.

The PAW drives GPS into a basic iPad fine. You set up parameters in SkyDemon and away it goes. Mine is very stable.
A mouse GPS Aerial works well.

General Discussion / Re: Bridge Board purchase
« on: September 27, 2016, 05:50:07 pm »
PAW strong but was attached by velcro to 12000mA Power Pack. Bizarrely the Power Pack was above PAW Unit when it struck ground.
Have tried a repair but not tested yet. If no good will return to Dave.

General Discussion / Bridge Board purchase

Gentleman
Had Senior persons mis-handling of PAW and Battery Pack and dropped it onto Hangar concrete floor.
The PAW Aerial broke its fall but removed the hard wired socket from PCB including copper pads!
Looks beyond repair.

Can I purchase a Bridge as a replacement. I have a License and it will be fitted to existing RPi.

General Discussion / Re: ADSB receiver dongle
« on: September 15, 2016, 05:43:37 pm »
I place my ADS-B Dongle away from RPi using USB Male/Female shortish cable, about 20 cm. It radically reduced the heating against when connected directly to RPi.
All three Units I produced are wired this way and all seems good.

G-RVBC, an RV6 hopefully will be transiting from Bath, Somerset to Newcastle on Saturday with ETD about 08.30 Local. It will be carrying Pilot Aware but is also Mode S with ES equipped.
A return flight will be late afternoon. Hope it gets spotted but not too close!

General Discussion / LAA Rally
« on: August 28, 2016, 12:38:23 pm »
Will Pilot Aware have a stand or presence at the LAA Rally - Sywell on Friday through to Sunday?
I ask as it may be an opportunity for a Ground Station there to record PAW equipped user Aircraft arriving.
I hope to fly in on the Saturday around 10.30 and will have active PAW......unless I get too many targets!

General Discussion / Re: PAW of limited use (for now at least)
« on: June 20, 2016, 07:06:27 am »
PAW is an additional aid within the cockpit to add value to the normal airmanship functions to keep flying.
At the moment we still need to talk to Air Traffic, carry a Map and serviceable compass and they have been with us many years.
The advent of GPS navigation software available to all seems to have diverted attention from pure flying but at least less chance of getting lost or bursting a zone.
I have all the additional hardware mentioned and operate under a CTA and have no problems with services available so.....
PAW doesn't do everything yet, not its fault as it displays via Third Party applications but it is a very useful addition to the cockpit for look out awareness. It's intended design.
The fact that FLARM doesn't want to share information is again no fault of PAW.

With some of the requests being asked for I wonder if a ground based simulator may suit some people more than actually flying. Cheaper too.

BTW. PAW with only ADS-B recently went on a multi European country tour and proved very useful, especially in busy TMA's.

Go fly with it Julian! If you come West pop into my Strip. No landing fees.

General Discussion / Aerial positions
« on: May 29, 2016, 04:16:47 pm »
This weekend I installed PAW in my old Wood/Metal/Rag single seat.
Cant vouch for the longevity of my placements but ended up doing the following.
Mouse GPS placed within the wooden ribbed wing itself via inspection cover. Velcro attachment to bottom surface.
ADS-B Aerial mounted vertically, again within the wing via inspection panel. Velcro and Tie wrap.
PAW Aerial is a 868MHz 'Puk' aerial mounted on the centre aluminium panel covering parasol wing attachment. It's biased towards the front and has good omni direction when in flying attitude.
All leads are fed in down each separate vertical cabane to ensure no interfernce. Pi 2 then velcroed to the very small panel area I have available.
Performance is great with multiple ADS-B 'hits' and 9+ satellites instantly.
The only aerial visible but only just is the Puk.

Puk Aerial from RF Solutions. https://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/antennas-c8/miniture-puk-sma-antenna-433-868mhz-p137
I experimented with this during Beta testing and the old *** Tx/RX (like the Scottish play...cannot be mentioned by name) with improved results.
It would be a good option for faster aircraft and gives a small footprint and is easy to fit.

Just need to identify a PAW in the area!

Take a look here at various Documentation. I believe the documentation is being reviewed again at the moment to add information on introduced features in latest Unit or Bridge.
Many questions will be answered for you and a search on the forum to Mode C and FLARM will elaborate on latest situation.

General Discussion / Re: Dosnt work after loading latest version.

It was initially. I think it was changed to allow or ensure the WiFi Mac Address was not the predominant identifier.
That would make licensing aligned with Device. I could be be totally wrong......

General Discussion / Re: Licensing cost
« on: December 05, 2015, 05:14:36 pm »
I dont know but I would think it adheres to many Software models where a License is paid to ensure continued development of that software.
It's been going on for nearly 40 years led by Microsoft. Oracle, Apple and on a more focussed assessment, SkyDemon and many other Navigational or Avionic systems.
I share my Hangar with a very well equipped RV that has just paid Garmin for 'extended squitter' on their Mode S model. £800+ for software upgrade.
The Pilot Aware cost structure and licensing is very fair and I for one will be quite happy to pay as I am for SkyDemon too.

Licensing is to ensure that piracy is kept to minimum and protects those who pay software maintenance annually. Try going on the Internet with a pirate copy of Win 8 and see how quickly Microsoft will pick you up. 30 days.
