Title: Ships power and Skydemon Logging
Post by: Lerk on March 27, 2019, 12:20:37 pm
Hi all,

I've been trying to solve an issue with logging engine start times in SkyDemon whilst using PAW connected to ships power.

Previously I used PAW on a powerbank, but now I am using one connected to ships power, I have stumbled on the issue of logging engine start when the PAW is not yet booted.

See discussion on SkyDemon Forum here... (http://forums.skydemon.aero/Topic28074.aspx)

It would appear that the only way to use PAW on ships power is to start the engine and then start flight logging 2-3 minutes later once the PAW has booted.

Are there any other users of installed systems that use SkyDemon that have come up with a better process for startup?

I'm wondering about a pass-through powerbank and separate switch, but I know Anker don't do that and I know PAW issues are frequent when homebrewing power supplies!

Have you seen this? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jecgoBqOrhk)
(which I think is short on output power, 1A)
Or this (https://www.aliexpress.com/i/32966657059.html?spm=2114.search0301.3.10.59eae9bfErokJ7&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_0_10192_453_454_10618_536_317_537_319_10059_10696_10084_10083_10304_10821_10843_10887_10307_321_10548_322_10902_10065_10068_10301_10103_10884_10820,searchweb201603_0,ppcSwitch_0&algo_pvid=441362e1-d52e-4626-b68e-650404380001&algo_expid=441362e1-d52e-4626-b68e-650404380001-1), but I don't know if it will have the U in UPS

Hi Lerk
I've been using something very similar to this below[note output power] for a year+without any problems [I know I shouldn't have said that!].
Just choose your output plug.
Wired in through a separate CB on the main bus.
Comes on with the Master switch.
All fired up and ready to go before start up.
No problems with starter cranking - modern electronics is incredibly insensitive to voltage drops on the main bus - as this device appears to be.
For a simple avionics setup I can find no reason for an avionics master switch.

Good luck
Bob

Hi All,

Good to hear you are getting positive results using such a cheap power supply Ancien. Just a word of warning to others that these type of devices have a poor record as they can be very prone to putting out RFI (interference) all over the place, which can have a seriously negative effect on avionics (not just PilotAware) and comms. There is a reason why Aircraft specific power supplies are expensive - and it’s not to create profit for the makers.

I’m not saying don’t try it - just be aware of the potential issues.

Best Regards

Peter
