Technical Support / Re: Licence Key Renewal Problem
« on: January 21, 2020, 09:59:43 am »
Hi Lee,

Thanks for the update and pleased that the problem has been identified and can easily be resolved by doing the upgrade.

Yesterday Ashley provided me with new keys initially for 2021 which failed and then for 2020 which were accepted. Given the date issue  with the bank/DVLA I assumed that it was an OS problem.

I completed the upgrade my PAW system yesterday evening, before your post, to the 20190621 version which resolved the key date problem.

Thanks to Ashley, Peter and the PAW team for their support and assistance.

Regards
Ian

Hi Peter

Thanks again.

No problems with using binary, octal, hex which were used as part of my work.

Completed the tests again and have included a screenshot of the logging with the new licence key entered.

Interesting that it shows "today =20200120 sysdata.licence.date=20210124" but fails.

I have emailed support@pilotaware.com referencing this thread.

Will update.

regards
Ian

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply.
Initially I did the refresh/recycle several times without success before reboot.

As I was hoping to do some flying, which didn't happen, I took the opportunity to try again.
Entering the new key and saving did not update the system. Tried different combinations  of refreshing the config page, reentered the new key with multiple saves, displaying 1, 2 or 3 other pages before returning to the config page. Probably 20 combinations without the key being updated.

The key only updated on a reboot resulting in the Licence expired message. Entering and saving the current key automatically updated the system.

I don't know if you can answer this.. Is the License Expired message specific to the current date being later than the stored expiry date?
I know that some software error messages can refer to several errors.

I was planning to try the software upgrade on Monday but the only spare SD card that I have is 32gb and SD Formatter does not allow the "CHS format option" for cards over 8gb.

I will try entering the new key again and check the log to see if any messages are logged.

In the meantime, would the engineering team, with Lee's agreement, be able to do
1) reverse engineer the new licence key to confirm that it corresponds to 20210124. Rules out any corruptioupdate you.
2) issue an interim key valid until 10/02/2020 ie 3 weeks to ascertain if the same problem occurs.

Will update you.

Ian

Technical Support / Licence Key Renewal Problem
« on: January 18, 2020, 08:31:00 pm »
I have a PAW Classic using version 20180129 and the licence expires on 25/01/2020.
The intention was to apply the new licence keys and once verified everything was working as expected to then upgrade to the latest version.

I renewed the licence on 10/01/2020 and received an email with the new key with an expiry date of 24/01/2021.

On Friday, 17/01/2020 I entered the new licence key into the PAW system, saved it and rebooted the system. On reboot the Config page was showing "License Expired".

Checked that new key entered was as per the email and that the MAC address on the email was that of the PAW system. Both were correct.

Reentered the current licence key, saved and rebooted. On reboot the Index and Config pages showed "License Expires (25012020)"
Entered the new key, saved and powered down the system. After power up the Config page was showing "License Expired".

As the plane was booked for Saturday I reentered the current licence key and verified that the system was fully functional.

At home I rechecked and verified that the correct MAC address had been used when requesting the licence key renewal.

Could you please check as to whether I have made a mistake resulting in an incorrect licence key being issued  and advise my next steps.

I noticed that the new expiry date is 24012021 instead of 25012021. I presume that this is due to the extra day this year and would not affect the creation of the licence keys.

I was made aware this afternoon of a problem with both a national bank and the DVLA.
A friend tried to change a direct debit to begin on 01/02/2020 but was rejected with the message "Must not be more than 50 years in the future".

I have included a link to the DVLA as it is also date related

Could these issues be related to my licence date problem?

 Thanks

Technical Support / Re: Power Cable Query

Keith,
Thanks.
I had seen the 10cm cables, unfortunately they are too short and there is no option to re-position either the USB or PAW devices, hence the 30cm cable as Ian Melville is using.

Update on the 2 comments.

Compatibility
Support at Trig Avionics have replied with a reference to the TT31 Installation Manual section 2.7.12 GPS Input. This lists the protocols that are recognised one of which is output from the PAW.
In addition they are going to add it to their FAQs online.

Connection to a Radio
I have discussed this with the avionics engineer who will be carrying out the work and it is not an issue.
The work is being done through our service organisation so they will be aware of these changes.

Thanks for your comments. That is where these forums are helpful as other members think of things that you don't.

Ian,
Thanks, I will order one of these cables.
Will keep the supplied cable in reserve.

I can appreciate Lee's concern about using a suitable size of cable, no different from domestic/industrial cabling.

Thanks for the info, I missed the para re the comparability.

I will email Trig support over the weekend.
I don't think that there will be a problem as there is a question in their FAQ section for ADS-B regarding using a FLARM GPS as a position source.
PAW outputs the NMEA protocol which is compatible with Trig transponders.

The direct connection bit has been ignored.

Hi Lee,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Unfortunately I did not make clear that juicebitz was the place that I checked and the shortest 20 AWG on their website is 0.5m hence the query.

I have subsequently phoned juicebitz and they confirmed that the shortest micro usb cable is 0.5m.

Will go with the 0.5m cable and look at reducing the length in the future.

Thanks

Technical Support / GPS Output Query

Follow on query from the Power cable query.

With the approval of CS-STAN Amendment 3, we are now going to take advantage of it and connect the GPS from the PAW to a Trig TT31 transponder. Straight forward as the procedure is well documented.

We have a Garmin 225 radio which has a GPS input. It would be a shame not to take advantage of this so that the radio provides confirmation of the station of the frequency selected and a few other options.

As the PAW is a "temporary" install, it has to be easy to remove and therefore the connections would be via plugs & sockets.

Has anyone have experience of splitting the GPS output from the USB-RS232 module and if so how?

Thanks
Ian

Technical Support / Power Cable Query
« on: May 24, 2019, 10:35:44 am »
I have 2 queries relating to  1) power cable and 2) GPS output, the 2nd of which will be in a separate thread.

We have had a Classic PAW "temporarily" fitted to a Cessna 152 since Jan 2018 using the supplied 1M 20 AWG power cable connected to an Anker 4.2A/24W USB car charger. This setup has been working without any problems. The only downside is that the power cable runs across the instrument panel.
Several members of the group have older systems that can only be powered from a car charger type socket hence only 1 of the devices can be used.

We are now going to install a Charge 4 USB panel mount unit into the radio stack and hardwired into the electrics.
No issues are foreseen with this new setup.

However, the distance between the Charge 4 and the PAW unit is now less that 0.25m. The existing 1m power cable is too long and the shortest 20 AWG cable that I can find is 0.5m.
Does anyone know where I can purchase a 20 AWG cable between 0.20m and 0.25m in length?

Thanks
Ian
