General Discussion / Re: Ships power and Skydemon Logging
« on: March 27, 2019, 08:38:09 pm »
Hi Lerk
I've been using something very similar to this below[note output power] for a year+without any problems [I know I shouldn't have said that!].
Just choose your output plug.
Wired in through a separate CB on the main bus.
Comes on with the Master switch.
All fired up and ready to go before start up.
No problems with starter cranking - modern electronics is incredibly insensitive to voltage drops on the main bus - as this device appears to be.
For a simple avionics setup I can find no reason for an avionics master switch.

Good luck
Bob

General Discussion / Re: first test flight with Rosetta - advice?

I share Stodge's opinion of the metric ranges.
After 55 years of flying, my eyeballs are calibrated in nautical miles!
I have no idea how difficult it would be to change it, but it would be very helpful.
Cheers.

Hi TL
I have had my PAW rigidly mounted for a couple of years ["Velcro" 10 AN bolts!]. I operate from far from smooth grass and I have never had a dropout.
I would suggest the most likely cause are the power connections being loose. A momentary loss will upset it. Could you try a different cable/socket/power supply?
The micro USB on the Raspberry Pi is probably the weakest link.
Good Luck.

I have found James Rose's playback really good.
It's on aircrew.co.uk
I hope his new display succeeds.
I fly down south mainly during the week and it is amazing how little traffic is around.
You are doing well for central Scotland!
Cheers.

Have you taken the magnet out of the 1090 antenna?
My PAW is hidden just below the compass and has had no issues at all.

I really think this weather broadcast is a non starter in the UK.
For goodness sake you can listen to ATIS almost everywhere and it's not going to give you the weather at Bogfarm International.

The US is a vast country and people fly long distances where the weather can change dramatically.

In the UK you read the forecasts for a relatively short flight. If it is marginal you are very stupid to continue.

Of course all the pretend airline pilots will want it to go with their stupendously expensive flat screens and try to make us all have compulsory ADSB so they convince themselves they are flying in a fully known environment.

Can't recommend a purchase.

Cheers Bob

Success!

Formatted and full install as per guide. All up and running with no error message.

Thanks.

Hi Lee
Many thanks for the quick response.
I'll try the full install from the user guide. As the strip is so wet it will make a change from polishing the plane!
Cheers

Technical Support / Error message on UPTIME line
« on: April 25, 2018, 10:33:51 am »
On the home page Uptime line I am getting this :

  error=1 error_mag="Command not registered"

All seems to be working OK - tested with my other PAW unit. Not yet able to test in the air as my strip is still waterlogged!

Any ideas?

Technical Support / Re: Direct fit RTL-SDR antenna ?

You really don't need a special antenna.
Just remove 69mm of the coax sheathing from the end of whatever length of extension cable that you need [as short or long as you like] from your adsb dongle and cover this bit with heat shrink. Thread through a suitable plastic sucker and stick to side window or screen. See photo.
It's as minimalist as you can get and dirt cheap. IT WORKS. Excellent range. Nothing to break and very easily carried when changing planes.
Why does everybody want to spend so much on unneccessary add-ons?

I came across this website:

https://planefinder.net

I was surprised to see my aeroplane had been tracked on several flights for part of the routes I flew.
I do not carry a transponder only PAW.

Is it getting its information from the OGN/PAW ground stations?
Big Brother is out there!
At least it is an easy check that my PAW is working with a good range.

I can see several drawbacks.

You have paid a lot for something that you don't need.
It's much too big to hang in the cockpit.
When you are flying you will not be interested in transponder traffic more than a few miles away ( unless of course you will be exceeding the 250 kt limit below 10000)

You have a lead that connects to this new antenna. Cut the end off and remove the coaxial sheathing for 69 mm from the end. Stiffen it up with heat shrink and Hey Presto one excellent 1090 antenna.
You could do it with your broken antenna lead - nothing to lose - a small plastic sucker will hold it to the window.

I certainly wouldn't strap it to the PAW antenna.

This works in my aeroplane in the hangar, picking up passing mode C and very distant ADSB with no trouble. In the air its very unobtrusive.

God luck and remember KISS

You have android. Try Radar3D.
It is much easier to interpret at a glance.
Less cluttered and configurable so you don't have to set it up every time you use it.

I am a total supporter of PAW but it is not TCAS. I am concerned that so many posters on this forum are hoping to change it from a cheap as chips awareness system to something that airlines pay millions for.
