Thanks Lee - so probably the issue was a drop out with the tablet, not the PAW

Thanks for that. I've replayed the track and it was very interesting as to what was about that day.

But no, the replay didn't answer the questions, really.

Technical Support / Track Log explanation

Dear all

I was flying yesterday in the SW. As we don't have much of a grid of ground stations here, I never had the chance to experience the bearingless target upgrade.

But looking at the track log, it looks like PAW dropped out, probably due to high temperature eg a lot of lines like this.

Quote
$PALOG,20200625,115231,WIFI,UDP,192.168.1.27:4000,DISCONNECTED
$PALOG,20200625,115231,WIFI,UDP,192.168.1.27:2000,ATTEMPT
$PALOG,20200625,115232,TEMPERATURE,47.20,C

And then on the log, a host of these

Quote
$PALOG,20200625,115617,DEBUG,MODEC-FILTER-PASS,43C5E4,181,SIG,200,MAX,170,FILTER,3756,VDIFF

I didn't manage to find a single ground station between Cornwall and EGTU, but the A400M out of Newquay was there!

Is there a glossary of how to interpret the trk log for dummies?

Regards

Peter

Thanks Keith.

It will be a while before we are able to use PAW in a meaningful way. Certainly I haven't seen any of the North Hill glider for months, but I guess that is because the EGTU aerial is down when rebroadcasting.

I'm not sure that Mode S outnumbers Mode C, but looking forward to getting airborne again soon

General Discussion / Development of PAW

As we're now in lockdown and grounded for a bit, I'm just wondering what is happening with PAW.

The last update was around 10 months ago and, to be honest, I haven't been able to use some of the new features (the multilateration doesn't seem to work for me in the Far SW, probably as we have fewer receivers). I rarely see Mode C traffic, even when I am flying alongside them. I seem only to pick up Mode S, ADSB and PAW.

SD does produce more regular updates and their version history now shows forthcoming developments. Is this a practical thing for PAW to do?

Finally, could the PAW team bring us up to speed as to what they are working on and the direction of travel of PAW, as far as they can.

Well, today I picked up ADSB, Mode S and PAW contacts but no FLARMs at EGTU.

I'm not at all clear the gliders today were using FLARM but none were showing viaa PAW.

It was between 14:00 and 16:00 yesterday.

I saw no FLARM contacts at all on PAW, though the OGN site picked them up. I didn't look to see if my a/c was displayed, as I assumed it would have been filtered out.

I'll check again at the weekend when I'm next there

I was at our airfield (EGTU) yesterday where there is an OGN/PAW aerial. Whilst I could pick up ADS-B and (some) Mode S contacts I couldn't see any Flarm-equipped gliders who were definitely in the air. A colleague logged into the OGN  thingy and it was clear that it was picking up and tracking gliders, but they weren't being displayed on either my SD or on the traffic page of PAW.

My question is, how would I know if the issue lies with the rebroadcast from the OGN/PAW aerial or my Rosetta? Looking at the config page it showed no error messages that I could see.

Technical Support / Re: A really weird one, PAW grabbed traffic and held it.

"Hi Peter,

Dropbox is a ‘free’ file storage and transfer utility provided you keep storage within a 2Gb limit."

Thanks for that

Attached is the dropbox link.

As in the other cases above, when the track is run through Aircrew, these aircraft don't appear, so I would guess there is something in the interface with SD that is causing this.

"Peter,

This is a known phenomenon - if you replay PAW track files on PAW, it treats the track data as if it was ‘live data’ and if it is also receiving external data from it’s antennae, it will parse (combine) this and pass the combined data to the Nav Display. I don’t think this is what Geoffrey and the others are experiencing though as the initial reports are of apparently latched aircraft ‘in flight’ not during replay."

It was the same for me crossing the channel.

"Hi Peter
I do not see any attachemnts. If they are too large you will need to use dropbox/googledrive or similar
Thx
Lee"

How do you do that?

Attached the Track log from my cross channel flight and 3 screenshots from SD showing 2 aircraft (N95GT and f-GYKL) locked into the same relative position across the flight. The Aircrew track does not show this,

On another point. When you replay the track, which I did to get these images, the replay will pick up aircraft that are about now. For example on one image it shows an aircraftwithin close range - in fact it was sitting on the apron in front of me when the replay was running.

I had a similar thing coming back from France recently. One aircraft stayed close all the way back across the channel.

But I ran the track file through the viewer and the aircraft was dropped soon after takeoff. Is this an issue with the way SD handles things?

Thanks for that, but you've been saying that for some months

I suppose we are getting used to monthly upgrades on apps. SD has a version history including what is coming in the next version, but PAW is less informative

I'll wait to see how the new version is received before I migrate as I have a rule - never be an early adopter

I use the cable from Rosetta to my Lightspeed Zulus.

Much of the time it works OK and when taxying out works well. But once in the air the audio contacts are faded right out and they are almost inaudible. I've been trying all sorts of options but either the contacts are too loud or you don't hear them.

My guess is there is something in the headset configuration, but I'm not sure how best to sort it.
