Technical Support / iGrid connection
« on: February 26, 2023, 01:39:58 pm »
Hi

I’d bought the dongle (direct from PAW to ensure the right chipset) for iGrid support, but up to now hadn’t really tried to use it because effectively you need three devices; a iPad or other tablet for your moving map, a phone to provide a hotspot for the PAW (Rosetta in my case) to connect to for iGrid services, and another device for the PAW radar display. But I’ve now been given an old iPhone 5 (with no SIM), to use alongside my iPhone 11 & iPad mini 5. The iPhone 5 can then be used for the radar display, my 11 can provide (theoretically) the hotspot, and the iPad used for SkyDemon.

So I ensure WiFi is “off” on my iPhone 11,& ensure “Personal Hotspot” and “mobile data” is turned on, then turn on the Rosetta. Once it’s started, I connect the iPhone 5 to it via WiFi, and logon to paw.local on the iPhone 5’s browser. I go to the “Network” page, and refresh the available networks - and it sees NONE, not even my home WiFi network ( I’m testing there, not in the aircraft), let alone the phone hotspot. All it shows is a greyed-out “Hotspot SSID” even after refreshing.

On the paw.local Home page it shows “eth0=down” & “wlan1=down”.

Thoughts on what’s wrong here? I followed the install instructions (even watching the video on YouTube).

Firmware is 20220805

Technical Support / IGrid WiFi

So my iGrid dongle turned up today, bought from the PilotAware store.

But I can’t get it to work, and have carefully followed the instructions on the card it was attached to.

Using an iPad mini 5 for the to receive from the Rosetta, and a iPhone 11 to provide the personal hotspot. All Wi-Fi & Bluetooth is turned off on the iPhone, with mobile data enabled and a 4G connection sitting.

Screenshots are attached of screens on paw.local

Is the dongle actually working, given that it says wlan1 = DOWN?

What does the red flag mean? And how do I fix it?

Technical Support / 1090 Red Flag - Brand New Rosetta
« on: May 12, 2021, 11:58:27 am »
Hi

Brand new Rosetta out of the box, external antennas hang out of a window, booted to set up (which was successful). But no 1090 connections?

We have one of these units installed at Hunsdon. Great idea. Quick query - on average, how much data gets sent to & from the servers in, say, a month, given the unit is permanently on? We’re connected to the internet by a 4G WiFi dongle, which also has to handle our security systems, and I want to make sure our deal with the mobile network provider includes a sufficient data allowance.

General Discussion / Virtual Radar - iOs
« on: December 01, 2019, 07:32:14 pm »
Hi

When using the virtual radar via Safari on my iPhone 7S, I'm unable to drag the "circle" into the middle of the screen, It just stays at the bottom, with the edge off the lower edge of the screen. I'm sure I used to be able to move it up & down. Thoughts? Not critical, but it's nice to have it showing while my iPad is running SkyDemon.

General Discussion / Heat effect?
« on: July 02, 2019, 10:48:30 am »
So we’re on a trip from the U.K. to Croatia. It’s been very hot across Italy, around 35 degrees. Yesterday, after a lunch and fuel stop, my iPad wouldn’t connect to my PilotAware. I had to use my Garmin Glo instead (always have a back up!), and that connected.

Would it have been the heat that caused this? And, if so, was it the Pi or the GPS dongle that doesn’t like it?

Technical Support / Antenna location in a flexwing
« on: August 02, 2016, 10:45:27 pm »
So I've mounted the unit on the top of my Quik pod, but I don't  think this is the best location for the PAW antenna. What's the best place in a trike? And what's the best antenna? I was thinking of the stick-on dipole as sold on the PAW hardware website, mounted on the side of the monopole fairing, so it can "see" above the lump of the engine behind the aircraft as well as to the front.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Connection to Trig TT21
« on: May 24, 2016, 07:32:29 pm »
So my new unit arrived today. All plugged together, and working fully when tested in my back garden. Great!

Obviously what's different compared to my home built beta unit was the addition of the GPS dongle, as taking the GPS feed from my Garmin GLO through my iPad to the PAW via CollisionAware and back to the iPad was found (by me certainly) to be unreliable.

I was hoping to plug the new PAW into my Trig, but the lead I've got won't plug into the one remaining USB socket on the Pi because there's no room for it, as the other dongles block access.

Solutions? Or do I have to use a separate GPS source? I do have a GPSMap 196, which I can't update, but still knows it's Lat/Long.
