General Discussion / Re: USB-GPS Working in PilotAware
« on: October 26, 2015, 06:06:20 pm »
I have a G-Mouse based on the MTK chipset, and one of the 'recommended' uBlox7 GPS dongles.

The MTK chipped GPS has an almost instantaneous startup, position fix is spot on, as is 'direction'. Whereas the uBlox7 dongle can sometimes take 5 minutes to come up on a cold start and sometimes goes in and out of GPS lock several times before it becomes reliable. It also has a tendency to 'wander' in both position and direction, and often shows a groundspeed (albeit very low) when the thing is just sitting there.

I too have those issues with my uBlox, taking an age to fix from cold, then shows a small amount of movement, only 2 / 3 mph then settles for a bit. None of which I got when using the iPads gps source.

Found this Specification sheet.

http://www.wintec-gps.de/download/wintec_wgm-302_manual.pdf

Usb which through a USB/PS2 connector provides RS232, see end of above.

Not sure that it is a reliable source for the transponder as Im not sure of the workings of the USB/PS2 connector - thought they were just straight wired through of the USB in/out pins but could be wrong.

My TT21 I drive with a standard RS232 input from an AVMap V panel mounted which has the capability.

Another option would be the Garmin series, 795, 695 196 etc. Not sure the Aero can drive anything though not familiar enough for this to be definite.

So it looks like the USB version creates a virtual com port, which is the norm really.  As it requires a driver then it *may* not be plug and play on the Pi, depends on how they create the VCP.  I'd forget the PS/2 version, as you would need to inject 5v power into the signal path between the GPS and Transponder if you wanted to plug it into the DB9 port on a transponder.

There are two different versions, WGM-302 U for USB and WGM-302P for the PS/2 version.

U-Blox5 started in 2008 and doesn't appear to be around any more?

Anything like this, the devil is in the detail.

I've found this one too, think it's also workable with a Trig

If the enabling the PAW RS232 output is not a priority (and I'm not saying it should)  then perhaps a cheap £20 gps like this would get us up and running with ADS-B output.

I think this would do the job for less than £30

General Discussion / ADS-B tranmitted via a Mode S TX for the NATS Trial
« on: October 19, 2015, 05:12:59 pm »
Hello,

Has anyone explored wiring their PilotAware box to their transponder for ADS-B output?

I've emailed the NATS people to see if
1. it's not too late to take part in their uncertified GPS trial
2. if they mind that the uncertified device is not a fancy MGL or some other commercial unit like a Garmin but a PilotAware box.

I appreciate the wire connecting them would have to "signed off" by an inspector  / mod approval submitted but it wouldn't be any different to the mod approvals for all the other people taking part in the trials, or would it?

A couple of thoughts spring to mind now I've got the device up and running, sorry if someone else has already mentioned these, I couldn't see anything about the data side of things....

1.  is poss to integrate a USB GPS dongle saving the wifi connection to the device? and if not..
2.  could it connect to the device over Bluetooth instead ?

Reason for asking is my iPad has a data sim installed and as I fly along it updates SkyDemon's data, weather, metars etc,(handy on those long flights) but obviously once the iPad is connected to a wifi network all data from the sim stops as it assumes it has internet access from wifi.

I'm not clever enough to come up with the solutions... just asking the questions  ;)

I'll be tootling in an area between Cheddington (Halton) - Daventry - Westcott tomorrow (Sept 13th) between 1100 and 1400 subject to weather.

Anyone else in my neck of the woods around during those times?

Al

I'll be out testing mine about the same time near Buckingham / Aylesbury depending on wx

Hello,

Just a note to say thanks to Lee for the hard work and time you've put into this!

Mine is up and running today with latest release 20150911 , pics attached, hopefully I'll get chance to test it in the air tomorrow

General Discussion / Traffic / Contact Filters
« on: August 31, 2015, 07:14:56 pm »
Hello, sorry if this is obvious once you have the system up & running but mine isn't built yet....

I was just thinking...If you fly to White Waltham.....will the screen be swamped with multiple contacts from Heathrow or can you set PA filters?
Even in open FIR.....I wouldn't be bothered by contacts more than 3 or 4 thousand feet above.

Thanks in advance
Ben
