After several precarious hours up a ladder on the clubhouse balcony we managed to get our new Atom/Grid station at Nympsfield (Bristol & Glocs Gliding Club) up and running today, so hopefully it will help with Glider/Flarm visibiity in the Severn Valley. Many thanks to Keith & Co for providing the base station....

OGN-R PilotAware / Which antenna co-ax?

Doing the preparation for our new Atom/Grid instal. Slightly complicated as I cant get site access at the moment to measure cable runs to the antenna location, so wondering about just bulk buying the cable and connectors so we can make it up on site when we get access.  There seems to be a big price difference between RG8, RG8x and LMR400.  I think we're going to end up with about 8m cable run, so just wondered what experience is with the different cable grades  and what people typically use?

OGN-R PilotAware / SDR Installation and insulation

Just putting together a new station for Nympsfield (BGGC). I'm putting everything into a project box ready for installation (when we're allowed back in the clubhouse), the SDR's provided have already had the aluminium cases removed (which helps them fit). Just wondering if I need to insulate/protect them somehow - eg heat shrink or silicon tape round the exposed SDR  boards ?  What do people normally do ?

I was also thinking of using 90 degree USB adaptors which make the fit a bit neater.

Hi. I was wondering if there was any developments on the hardware side for a Rosetta follow-on or different HW platforms?   

I completely agree with the latest youtube video on Atom-Grid, PAW makes a great integrated receiver for multiple protocols. My issue is that I struggle to find an easy way of mounting Rosetta + battery + antenna in a glider cockpit that is already full of gizmos !  (Note before everyone chimes in, I'm not saying it's impossible, just not convenient or neat in my setup).

I was wondering, for example, if it would be possible to build a receiver based around something really compact like the PI-zero-W, so you could come up with a unit with internal battery & speaker in a compact format?  As I already output Flarm and ADSB I'm most interested in the receive side, which presumably means lower power demand?

I'm not at all familiar with the technical issues, so this may be a non-starter, just wondered  if there was anything in discussion

Technical Support / rosetta power consumption

Just wondered what the average current draw of a Rosetta setup is. I see PAW recommend power supply that will deliver 2Amp at 5V, but assume the average is lower than this. Also I guess you have some inefficiency in the 5V to 12V conversion, so if (for example) the average is 1A at 5V, that is 5W, or 417ma at 12V, assume 80% efficient conversion then that implies around 500ma current draw from a 12V battery supply.

Any real-world measures would be appreciated.
