That's about the only thing I could think of too.

I'll have a poke around for a shielded USB extension and see if that makes any difference

Thanks

Technical Support / Odd ADSB USB problem
« on: January 03, 2018, 04:51:50 pm »
Afternoon all ..

Can anyone shed any light on this for me ..?

More of the kit has arrived today for my all-in-one case ...

I've set about connecting things up to test for fit and positioning and have come across the following ..

With the ADSB dongle hooked up to the correct port on the Pi with the supplied whip antenna, all is fine (shows as connected on the home screen, GREEN and receiving messages and updating skydemon correctly with traffic. - All is good

With the ADSB dongle hooked up to the correct port on the Pi with the Nooelec 1090 Mhz antenna connected via a short pigtail, all is fine (shows as connected on the home screen, GREEN and receiving messages and updating skydemon correctly with traffic. - All is still  good

As soon as I put the ADSB dongle , (with a pigtail and NooElec 1090 MHz antenna this time) on a short (approx. 4 inch) USB extension, ADSB drops out - the home screen shows the dongle is connected, but RED with no messages.

If I replace the NooElec antenna with the whip antenna (still with the ADSB dongle connected via the USB extension) it springs back to life

I have tried this with  several different  SMA MCX pigtails (several came with the NooElec antenna, plus some others I had) - no difference made

I've tested the USB extension on a couple of PC's - accessing USB memory sticks etc etc and all is fine there ....

Have to admit to being slightly baffled .. (the short USB extension is a left angled one so that I can move the ADSB dongle to a move suitable location in the case ....)

Thanks in advance

Technical Support / Re: Tiding up the cockpit, optimal placement
« on: January 01, 2018, 02:17:18 pm »
I'm fully with you on this one ... I move around between a few different aircraft so am currently re-casing in something more portable / cockpit friendly ..

I'm still waiting on a couple of parts to arrive (Christmas break / shipping from the far east etc etc)

I currently have my PAW 'strapped' to the back of my iPad mount - 2nd pic (which in turn uses a twin sucker to attach to the aircraft windscreen)

The finished item all fits in the case as seen on the first pic, with the main P3i antenna (still awaiting the pigtail so I can fit it) going opposite the NooElec 1090 antenna ...

So far (and there will be some changes in the V2 case) I've fitted an inline power switch (a short 20AWG Juice Bits cable was suitably butchered) and thin mesh to the top to aid cooling and allow me to see the LED's on the Pi / Bridge.

The Pi fits nicely in the rest of the space, with room for the USB connected parts ( the ADSB dongle will move from the bottom of the Pi with a very short USB extension), and the Ublox GPS is being replaced with the external mouse type (still in transit) with a shortend cable.

I'm even tinkering with the idea of a small audio amp and speaker to go in there too to make it a truly stand alone unit, but that's still in the tinkering stage - there will be an extention of the Pi's audio out jack on the bottom of the case when the bulkhead fittings arrive ....

I'll do a full post when its all here !!

Thanks Lee

I'll dig out the datasheet from the RS website and see what's used by the Pico ...

So far , it looks like it shares the I2C interface

It's no biggie if it's not compatible ....

Cheers

Hi Lee

It's related to the other thread I started about the Pico UPS / Battery ....

There's some stuff to install on the Pi to run the addon card and I'm not sure of it'll sit along side the PAW stuff .....

Cheers

Technical Support / GPIO Ports - which ones are used
« on: December 22, 2017, 02:14:23 pm »
Hi again ...

As I've mentioned on one of my previous posts, I'm incorporating my PAW and power brick into a single 'carry-on' style enclosure.

Most of the bits are either here or on the way (Christmas post means I probably wont get this finished til the new year)  - all I'm doing is fitting everything neatly into a 190 x 140 x 30 Hammond instrument enclosure, using shorter cables where necessary for the power supply etc, shortening the lead from the GPS Mouse so it'll sit on top of the case and eternally mounting the antennas (ADSB one replaced with the NooElec one) and extending the cables with short RG316 pigtails in the enclosure.

This got me thinking about a power switch for the PAW - more searching led me to a post detailing that the software is in Read Only mode for most of the time (so the whole shutting down the Pi correctly isn't an issue) so I figured I could just keep the USB sockets on the power brick visible / available through a suitable hole in the case and just connect the PAW power by plugging in .. V1 of the case is being put together like this - the added benefit being that I can use the second USB port on the power brick to charge / power something else if I get caught short.

I'll post pics when I've got most of the rest of the parts here ...

The real Q on this post is about this MODMYPI LTD MMP-0045 UPS PIco I2C Control, Power Supply HAT for Raspberry Pi from here https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/power-management-development-kits/1270208/?cm_mmc=UK-PPC-DS3A-_-google-_-DSA_UK_EN_Semiconductors-_-Power+Management+Development+Kits-_-DYNAMIC+SEARCH+ADS&matchtype=b&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9_LRBRDZARIsAAcLXje8zFQy8kxZTGOVj5pAo5iWmeFNUbPVB9-SNTdaEzNdeR45_9zy_9kaAkb7EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I stumbled across this whilst looking for power switch solutions and it seemed like a handy addon, especially as further reading of the specs details the fact that larger capacity batteries can be added (up to 8000mah) which should power the PAW for a considerable amount of time.

So the question is - which GPIO ports does the radio bridge use .? I'd like to check to make sure theres no conflict with the Pico board. (It's stackable and will fit in the case I'm using ...)

And from the other side, I've enquired via the ModMyPi forum what features are available at the hardware only level , just in case there are any issues installing the required software and messing up the PAW install ... There's not a great deal to add though ...

Thanks in advance

PS - I've been in the IT game for the thick end of 30 years now and am more than happy at the command line, though this is my first Pi - I kind of didn't bother with them when they first came out ...

Just a thought as it seems like a neat solution

Hi all ..

I've done a quick search and came across an older posting regarding SSH access being blocked / disabled

Can someone confirm if this is the case (I've tried and am unable to get to the PAW using Putty ...) before I dig out a HDMI to DVI converter from somewhere ...

Thanks

Plug another set of iPhone type headphones into the PAW and see if the whine is still there ... if it is then it's pointing to the power source (or something else on the PAW)

Can you try a different power source to see if that's the common point .?

You could try to attached a ground to the audio cable shield .... though I'dve thought it'd get that from your audio panel.

I've been using mine whilst testing with a single earpiece (the computer skype type ones) plugged into the PAW and then into my ear under my headset (Bose X doesn't have an audio in though I believe there's a mod you can make using the pins on the unused earcup connector but that's a different story)

Thanks for the feedback...

I've decided to dive in and build a complete enclosure to house the PilotAware hardware and power source (I use the Dell Power Companion) in one very portable unit.

I've sourced a suitably small enclosure to hold it all, and will route the antenna cabling using pigtails so they can be mounted on the outside of the enclosure. (The antenna's 'spin' so different orentations will be available ...)

It looks like the GPS mouse from the Hardware Store will will be a worthwhile addition to replace the plug-in one (so I can get the receiver outside of the box) - I'll just need to shorten the 2m cable and re-solder a USB plug onto it

I've spare RAM Mount parts so I'll have one of the 1" balls fixed to the rear of the case to allow for various mounting options (sucker to the window, clamps etc etc)

Currently investigation options to allow the LEDs to be viewed remotely (Power etc etc) and a suitable power switch ....

I'll start a new thread once bits start to arrive and document the build process .

Morning and thanks for the reply ...

I did a little more digging last night, and also ordered a 6" pigtail with a right-angle MCX connector from evil-bay (the one supplied with the NooElec antenna has a straight plug)

I've not yet looked at alternate receivers etc as I'm still getting to grips with the stock kit - looking at the Flightaware one and checking the dimensions of the Stratux case (43mm available in the 'covered' section) it'd stick out by another 50mm (the Flightaware one is 93mm long).

It'd work if you were going to mount the antenna externally with a USB extension to the device - my only worry would be from the extra weight on the USB connector with the Flightaware receiver / antenna combo - it'd be asking to get knocked and pull the USB socket of the Pi ... (unless secured in some other fashion ...)

When it all gets here I'll look at mounting options for the case - some of the ones I've seen on here have the antenna's place at either end (length ways) as opposed to both at the top - the former may suit me better and still be suitable for good GPS reception.

For me, this will need to be portable as I fly a number of different machines so it need to be sturdy and fully functional with the minimum of cables/clutter !!

Hi all ...

New to the forum, and to Pilotaware, but steadily getting to grips with things....

I've been reading up on the replacement case options and will be going wih the popular Stratux case to replace the stock one that came with my Pilotaware setup.
(my temporary setup is cable tied to the back of a RAM ipad mount, and there's cabling for the ADSB antenna tucked up there too that I'd like to get rid of, and also keep the antenna's fixed to just one 'box' to keep things tidy and portable)

I'd also like to use a better ADSB antenna, and am just checking that this one from Amazon will do the job instead of the spindly one supplied with the mag mount and 1m cable ...? https://www.amazon.co.uk/NooElec-ADS-B-Discovery-Antenna-Bundle/dp/B01FS0GI0W/ref=pd_sbs_107_8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3ZA43717F6K6HV976J23

I understand that I'll only need the 1090 Mhz one and can throw the other one ....

Can anyone point me in the direction of a right-angle adapter to connect the pigtail upto the ADSB dongle when it's installed in the Stratux case ..?

So far , with the stock setup it's all working as expected, with traffic plotted nicely on SkyDemon ....

Thanks in advance
Sean
