Technical Support / Re: 3G/4G Dongle and iGRID
« on: June 19, 2022, 10:10:16 pm »
I've been using a Wuawei E5576-322 MiFi  (internal antennas only) with mixed results.
Good coverage up to 2,500 ft but sketchy at anything above.
It's fitted with a Smarty SIM (Three network I believe), but which network provides the best 3g / 4g coverage? I've been reading EE is better in this respect than Three.

So not only should we consider the type of dongle / MiFi unit, type of antennas and position in the aircraft, but also and possibly more importantly, which provider will give the most consistent coverage.

Technical Support / Re: OGN-R uplink typical range
« on: January 09, 2021, 02:31:41 pm »
It's also worth knowing that the OGN base station software has been updated several times since July which may help with this issue.
There was a theory floated that an uplink from one station could be stomped on by another therefore only a garble uplink was being received in the air. I think there is now some sort of uplink scheduling between ground stations to help prevent this, so may not be all down to your installation???
I'm still trying to get some flights in myself to do some more testing - not been easy!

Hi Young,

I've looked at the linked playback file and clicked all the aircraft that were uplink or Mlat.
This shows their traces in the horizontal view on aircrew/playback and gives an approximation of uplink 'continuity'.

I'm guessing you had intermittent uplink from Turweston, Husbos and other(s) near peterborough.

I have also seen a persistent 'ghost' aircraft follow at a relative position, but this was a number of updates ago and appears to have been fixed for some time.

Technical Support / Re: Vector shows PAW but not ADS-B signals
« on: December 30, 2020, 10:52:23 pm »
Hello GeoffreyC,

I'm not so sure Flight Radar is tracking you very well.
There is a big section between  Clapham and Sharnbrook where there were no tracking points.

Oundle to Peterborough looks good, but 'jumpy' between Whittlesey and Gold hill and also jumpy in the St Neots area.
Note: there are approximately 3,000 Flight radar ground stations compared to approx 200 ATOM stations so the chances that FR24 picks up your ADSB transmission is much higher because you are likely never to be far away from an FR24 station.
Flight on the 22nd shows similar big jumps.
However, flights in July show a good signal being picked up, so has a connector been disturbed or something else changed?

I'd be looking at the ADSB antenna / cabling installation, FR24 (and Vector) are indicating a possible range problem.

James of Aircrew.co.uk is currently testing some new software to:-

Allow simultaneous connection of PAW via USB, Flarm via RJ45, and SkyEcho via its WiFi so that the Aircrew traffic display will show all sources of traffic  8) 8) 8)

General Discussion / Re: Why no ADSB ( again )
« on: October 09, 2020, 05:41:52 pm »
Quite!

My view is that we should lobby CAA to make ADSB certification cheaper so that the "cost case" is no longer a factor for PaW. It just becomes yet another format that PaW Tx/Rxs as part of its awesome capabilities

The problem is it is not up to the CAA to relax the certification process because it is an international standard, its a ESA / ICAO thing.
i.e Other countries won't allow or take the risk of a having a 'lower' regulated device flying through their airspace and causing all sorts of havoc.
By all means lobby the CAA..... but the less painful option maybe banging your head very hard against a wall ;-)

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: Closure of Melisa Jenkins’ OGN Range Tool

I quite like the heatmap on https://www.gliderradar.com/ click on the ground station then coverage

Nice web site, would be good if you could filter Flarm PAW or ADSB etc.

I have also found that there is a significant difference between a PAW air to Air contact and Air to Ground station.
Initially I thought that it is that 'downward angle' and blanking by the aircraft structure, but at say 3,000ft and 15nm, the down slant is only 1.9 degrees,
so the antenna is getting a good view of stations in at least a 180 degree forward arc.
The antenna is the 'official PAW dipole with about 1.2m coax suckered to the windscreen.

I doubt if a 2db coax loss is the reason for only getting a 2nm range that the Op has reported.

I'm wondering why you didn't make an early alteration to your course so you didn't have a close encounter with Ikarus in the first place?
Isn't that the whole idea of electronic conspicuity!

General Discussion / Re: Torn between PAW and SkyEcho
« on: March 05, 2020, 07:17:28 am »
This sounds interesting :-)
As we have seen in the past, the PAW Team periodically announce a "upgrade" in functionality and it sounds like we're about to get another "upgrade".

Seen on the Flyer forum.
https://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=1750328#p1750328

"In addition to providing a console to view surrounding traffic and traffic provided by GRID neighbors
As you indicate it picks up PilotAware, FLARM, MLAT(via 360Radar), ADS-B, and 2 further forms of traffic sources which are yet to be announced."

Wonder what the 2 other forms of traffic are? I can't wait to find out.

What model of phone are you using? When you say you set it to ‘full screen Radar’ to supplement the display on your tablet, do you mean using PAW Radar

I was going to ask this very question: if you want the full radar screen on your iPhone and can't get it because the phone is too small for the Sky Demon radar display, why not just use the PAW radar display?

It (the full screen SD radar) worked on my old Samsung, don't think I've tried it on my newer Huawei p20. The SD radar is a bit more convenient to use instead of the web browser based access to get the PAW radar.
The PAW radar works on both tablet and phone.
I've been testing the Aircrew, so haven't used the PAW or SD (on phone) recently so can't be sure that the SD full screen radar hasn't been nobbled by one of the latest updates??

For info:-
I use android tablet which displays the small radar screen in the lower left corner while navigating.
Touching the small radar causes it to enlarge by about 2x. Another touch sends it back into the corner.

Occasionally I also use my android phone, which I can set to full screen "radar" as supplemental display to the tablet.
(When in nav mode it does not have the small radar screen as this would need a microscope to see).

Technical Support / Re: Why are some entries grey
« on: October 26, 2019, 09:53:11 am »
I think the greyed out aircraft are those that are not being sent to your tablet app due to the height and distance filter settings you have set in the PAW config.
