Technical Support / Re: Waiting for device
« on: May 14, 2023, 12:48:38 pm »
Thanks for the reply Steve and Expo.

My PAW classic has a password, so not an open network problem.
Samsung update the tablet more often than I use it :-)
I have been using i-grid intermittently, I haven't seen a correlation but will monitor that.

When I ON-OFF-ON the wifi it always connects to PAW, I don't see any other hotspots and have intentionally turned all other devices off which may have been more attractive to my tables wifi
Often it will connect automatically after random times from a few seconds upwards.

Maybe a "forget network" and re-enter the PAW login credentials is worth a try?

Strange thing is it always occurs after about 20 mins or more after take off.

Technical Support / Waiting for device
« on: May 12, 2023, 05:39:23 pm »
I've been using my trusty Samsung Tab4 SM-T230 running Android 4.4.2 which worked with my PAW faultlessly for several years.
Now I've "upgraded" to a Samsung A7 lite SM-T225 Android 13, I keep getting the "waiting for device message" in Sky Demon, normally after about 20 to 30 mins from start up.
Usually need to turn the tablet wifi off and back on, but once the problem starts, it repeats at random intervals. It's been like this for the past 6-9 months and not changed behaviour even with several recentish PAW firmware updates.

I'm pretty sure its a tablet issue as I've been in P2 seat with P1 running his Apple table, my Samsung flags the message but the Apple functions properly. I've also repeated the test with my phone and tablet connected, tablet flashed the message but phone continues to work fine.

As far as i can tell, bth tablets are configured the same.

Any suggestions?

Spoken to John today and the only GPS is the FLARM one, which provides PAW with position reports. EFIS is not connected to the FLARM/PAW system and has its own GPS. He agrees issue is displayed on SD live.
Not much flying going on today with the fog. didn't bother to do a test.

Any further ideas?
Cheers
Ian

I have my PF configured to only send Flarm and NEMA data.
PF can be set to send Flarm, ADSB and NEMA, so potentially the PAW could be having to handle ADSB from two sources if the PF unit has not been configured properly.

Deker, do you have GPS on your PAW, or do you use the data passed through from the PF unit?

This user also has a Kandaris(sic) I think EFIS. connected. Not sure if that also has a GPS? All a bit confusing and will get more details of his setup on Saturday.

I use the Flarm GPS antenna plugged into the Flarm unit.
The PF sends the NEMA and traffic data to PAW via the RS232.
PAW has no GPS antenna connected as data is provided by PF. (PF is set to send just Flarm and GPS. ADSB is direct into PAW using its own antenna)

Yes. GPS aerial has a very clear view of the sky (and the GPS is the one attached to PAW which is giving the PAW the correct location when displayed on PAW or SD. It’s just the Trig that seems to be displaying the wrong coordinates even though they’re all using the same GPS input!

Email Trig,
I've found their tech support to be legendary.

For info.

I have a Power Flarm Portable feeding Flarm traffic and GPS position to my PAW.
Paw also connected to iGrid.
ADSB and P3i connected to PAW

I've never seen any kind of jumping like the above in over two years of operation, I might see one jump in about 1 hrs flight at most.

Cheers,
Deker.

Our gps antenna gets covered when the canopy is slid back.
Is your GPS antenna in full view of the sky?

Quick search shows electric fences can be a source of radio and Tv interference:-

"Sparking inside cracked or poor quality insulators causes interference.
Vegetation touching the fence line close to the radio can also cause sparking and therefore interference.
Poor earth.
Bad joints.

To locate sparking caused by leakage, faulty joins, broken wires or faulty insulators, walk the fence line with a transistor radio tuned off station on the AM band on high volume. The clicking will get louder as the fault is approached."

Technical Support / Re: iGRID - Two devices required?
« on: July 07, 2022, 08:38:50 pm »
The ability of the phone to act as a wifi client AND hotspot simultaneously, is a feature of the phone, not PilotAware
The newer iPhone supports this but it’s impossible for us to compile a list of all devices, due to the vast range
Thx
Lee

Hi Lee,
thanks.
I've done a quick check and my phone informs me I have the option of Wifi OR hotspot - both on is not possible on my (Android) phone.

26
Could be the reason,
It works on my phone but I get the missing radar plot on my tablet browser, but OK on the tablet using Firefox for example.

That happened to me, I'm using an old Samsung Tablet and the old browser is not compatible.
Try using another browser.

If I have a tablet connected to PAW running Sky Demon in the normal way and use a separate phone to provide the GSM data with PAW connected it its hot-spot, can that phone be used to display the PAW traffic radar / weather page?

Fyi, if the weather is out of date it is removed, independent of whether gsm is active or not
Thx
Lee

Hi Lee,

How old does the data have to be before it is removed from the display?
I'd like to see a icon showing weather age in minutes please.
There was an NTSB recommendation that weather displays show the age of the data following a fatal accident which resulted from a pilot making a decision based on old data.

... All Wi-Fi & Bluetooth is turned off on the iPhone ...

I suspect that was your problem. When you turn off wifi, it disables the hot-spot - it's a wifi hot-spot.

My old Huawei phone showed the WIFi disabled when I enable the hotspot, and visa versa, the Wifi is re-enabled when I disable the hotspot.
