General Discussion / Re: Release notes for latest version.

Genuine question - why is it necessay for the pilot to see a change in colour of a ground station; it's surely irrelevant to us how long it is since it last broadcast its position as it doesn't move!

Is there another reason why its deemed a 'good thing' - if not, it just adds confusion.

, It soooo frustrating  :'(
So you’ve gone into a vegetarian restaurant, and halfway through your meal are complaining that it would taste so much better with meat in it, and you are now expecting the chef to do something about it. ;D

It can time for them to arrive. I also always see more when on the ground close to our local ground station than I do when airborne.

I don't have Flarm so cannot actually use that workaround but I am delighted to see you say that its an Apple matter that will be resolved in a couple of days. Thanks. The PAW software is SO astonishingly impressive that what I don't understand is why this problem, clearly affecting so many, exists at all since this is not a Beta update and as such, one imagines was vigorously tested and found to work.
It's nothing to do with SD code, but all to do with Apple changing things in iOS14 to 'improve security' and cocking it up.

Try connecting via the Flarm protocol, and if that works, retry by connecting via PilotAware. Anecdotally, that makes it work for at least that session.

As noted above, Tim has issued a SkyDemon beta which appears to resolve the problem (or actually works around it until Apple fix iOS/iPadOS) which should go out on public release in a couple of days.

General Discussion / METARs and Radar - why the inconsistent units?
« on: September 25, 2020, 05:21:46 pm »
It's bugged me (only a little, I'll admit) that despite the standard navigation unit for distance (rather than length) being nautical miles, PAW insists on using kilometres on the radar screen and traffic table. It's a mental translation that people shouldn't have to do, especially if trying to correlate with, say, a Traffic Service. We all know the brain goes to mush when flying.

I've just watched the YouTube on the METAR facility. It's great, but why are the colour codes based on miles, when the METAR themselves this side of the Atlantic are expressed metres?  Furthermore, are these nautical or statute miles?

It would take little effort to clean up these, and it would add a little polish, rather than grubby marks, to a great product.

3.14.4.260 has just been made available, seemingly to further help UDP connectivity issues.

Rule 1 of any technology: control the updates yourself, don’t let them happen automatically, particularly when it’s a completely new version!

There is one big difference though between a stiffie provoking Traffic Service and injecting audio alerts into the intercom, and that is that the TS provider will not step on his own transmissions. Normally you have two options when injecting audio - mute or meld. Either gives a non-100% solution.

I’m not against audio alert injection, it’s better than nothing, but it just underlines that nothing is 100% infallible. FTAOD I use ‘mute’, as I don’t want to lose an ATC instruction or message.

Hi Gerry,

Did you manage to upgrade with the ios app?
(My app loads 20190621)

Thx,

Roger
I had that problem, and resolved it by deleting the app and reinstalling it.

General Discussion / Release notes for latest version.
« on: September 03, 2020, 09:22:04 pm »
I’ve updated to the latest release, but I only discovered it was available through word of mouth.

Apart from the new METAR page, I have no idea of the other enhancements and improvements, and can’t find anything on the website.

Where can I see such release notes, please?

I'm an admin in a team of same on a large flying forum (>60,000) users.

One of the things we have a lot of problems with is people using data compression or saving in browsers on mobile devices. We end up with failed logins, odd invalid session errors, or constant connection/disconnection issues, with need to re-log in.

If using an mobile device, it may be worth disabling data saving/compression. Or, if you feel you need that in your main browser, download and install a different one for PAW. Googling will show you how to turn the feature on/off for testing...
But SkyDemon isn't a browser app.

Technical Support / Re: Radio noise , interference Rosetta for COM
« on: May 28, 2020, 11:27:42 am »
In the interests of balance, my Rosetta sits on the coaming three inches above the Garmin audio panel and within about 8 inches of the GNS430. I have never had any issue at all with interference in the COM, whether powered from a power bank or from the panel USB socket. I'm not aware that any of my friends with either a Classic or Rosetta have had a problem either. My aeroplane is metal.

It suggests that you may have a problem that is specific to your installation, or your Rosetta.

Does it need agreement of all the other EFB software authors, to ensure an unexpected user message doesn't upset their code. or is it the natural way of things that these things naturally get ignored if you are not specifically expecting them?

Hi Matt,

Good to hear from you, and I’m glad you are making some progress in resolving your issue. The penny hadn’t dropped it was you!

Things are going well, thanks. Luckily my aircraft has been away at the beauty salon for new paint over the last two months, thus dodging the floods which would have soaked it three or four times had it stayed at home.
