General Discussion / Re: Radar 360

I am having a similar issue, if I set up things like range rings or different info in the aircraft tabs (such as type etc) then it works until I refresh it or switch tabs, when all my changes are lost, I cannot even get it to save pressure in Hpa rather than the American inches of mercury!
What needs to be done to make the changes stick?

Have you killed the OGN service first, the gsm scan won’t run if the OGN service is still active.

sudo service rtlsdr-ogn stop
cd rtlsdr-ogn
./gsm_scan --ppm 0 --gain 20

(Assuming you are using a decent TCXO dongle, if it’s one of the older crystal controlled ones then set ppm to 50)

I know this may sound stupid, but have you also connected the comms ground? full comms requires 3 wires, TX, RX and ground.

It’s good to see someone has set up a station at blackbushe, (EGLK / PWEGLK)
I often pick up PW equipped aircraft going in and out of the bushe, however their PW range looks quite poor at the moment, hopefully it can be improved.

This shouldn’t be a problem, proper Flarm units don’t register stationary gliders.

Not sure this is true of all Flarm units.  Certainly at the Mynd, the gliders on the ground are still chirpinjg, because our PAW units pick them up.   Not sure what grade of Flarm units they are using - probably the cheaper ones.

Not sure how Flarm would get around the same old problem of gliders being stationary in wave.  Why would they risk the Flarm unit switching off, while flying at high altitude?

R

I don’t think that the Flarm units stop transmitting, more that the receiving units are programmed to filter out stationary units (I believe that the full Flarm string includes velocity and heading along with position and height) how this is handled in wave I don’t know.

Agree with you Graham. FLARM is a big issue in this regard as some glider operations just turn it on during the preflight in the morning and off when they pack up at the end of the day >:(
This shouldn’t be a problem, proper Flarm units don’t register stationary gliders, where I fly there are often 10-20 gliders in the launch queue all with Flarm on, the only time you normally get an alert from something on the ground is when a tug (with power Flarm) is manoeuvring. Otherwise it could be quite distracting on final approach if you suddenly got alerts from them all.
Also with the club fleet it makes sense to switch the Flarm on before the first launch and leave it on till the end of the flying day, otherwise people would forget to switch it on or hold up the launch queue waiting for it to initialise.

Technical Support / Re: Defective SD card holder.

All the later raspberry boards use a friction slot (non latching) as the spring latch ones used on the pi 2 were renowned for failing, with the later boards it is often useful to add a small tab of sticky tape to the SD card otherwise it is very hard to get it out if it is in a case.
Also I don’t think the pi3+ is supported yet, only the pi3 (but I would be happy to be wrong on this)

Should be txd to 2, rxd to 3 and ground to pin 5, without the ground you will not get anything.
If you have only 2 wires then it is probably orange is TX and black is ground so you would be using pins 2 and 5.
Depending on what you are connecting to you might need to swap 2 & 3 but ground always stays on 5.
The other thing to be aware of is voltage levels, most devices are ‘standard’ RS232 (+-12v) but some devices are TTL level (0 to 3.3v) and don’t take kindly to higher levels!

I don’t know if you have a CEX store nearby (one of these places that sell refurbished phones etc) as our one always seems to have Pi 3B’s in stock, they are sold as second hand (but with a 24 month warranty) and vary from brand new and sealed to used with a case and SD card.
Irrespective of the configuration they all seem to be at a fixed price of £30.

Your frequency correction is wrong, what type of dongle are you using? If it is one with a TCXO then the correction should be close to zero, the cheap Chinese ones have corrections as high as 50-60 but never as high as 169.5 the problem often arises when running the default GSM scan as it expects a stick with an offset around 50, with a TCXO stick the scan fails to go down low enough so it locks on to the next highest GSM signal and gives an incorrect offset, try stopping the OGN service and re-run the GSM scan with an initial offset of zero, (you cannot run the scan if the OGN service is still running)
Also unless you are in an area with very poor GSM coverage then you should probably reduce the GSM gain, somewhere around 20-25 is usually sufficient once the offset is correct.
Other than that it all looks pretty good.

OGN-R PilotAware / Re: OGNRANGE offline at the moment

Live.glidernet.org switched from google to open street maps a few weeks ago for the same reason, (Google’s greed) and seems to be working very nicely (I actually prefer it to google maps) so hopefully OGNrange can do the same, it is a very useful service and would be much missed.

PWAldersh now back and running on the latest image, hopefully a PW antenna upgrade to come soon.

Eric,
Thanks for that, however that doesn’t appear to work with the standard OGNPAW ground station, the only ports appear to be 8080, 8081, 8082 (the PAW stats) and 3013 (basestation output) no homepage on the Pi that I can find.

Just got PWAldersh back up and running as there should be quite a lot of activity in the next few weeks with the EGLF air show on, today’s run is showing as
P3I Packets OK=1302 NG=0
I don’t know how to get the separate TX / RX figures that Eric gives, but at least it is working, I will try to improve the PW antenna in the next week if I can.

Roger,
I will be following this with interest, Both PW and AirWhere look promising, however I think that PW ground stations and servers are going to be needed as unfortunately I don’t feel that we can rely on OGN long term, I have been involved with OGN for a long time (6th ground station in the U.K. but currently off line) however the development has all ground to a halt over the last couple of years with seemingly no innovation, that coupled with the current in-fighting makes me wonder how long it can last. Recent developments with rival trackers such as the use of Flarm transponder modules and greater cross platform cooperation are making OGN look rather behind the times now.
