General Discussion / All a bit confusing - Any Help Please?
« on: June 12, 2016, 09:59:39 am »
Hi Folks,

I've been away for a few weeks and returned to the great news about PilotAware upgrades etc, but I'm a tad confused about getting the various discounts etc.

I produced 2 PilotAware units (one for my own aircraft and another where I have a share).  The first unit produced was the very basic self-soldering jobwith the various boards and altimeter chips etc. (that still works perfectly), and the second used the ARF plug and play board - both based on the Pi B+ Board etc.

Due to the various issues with wi-fi dongles we had (we all remember these), I have a number of wi-fi access codes supplied, and I 'think' I have recorded somewhere the codes I actually use.

Now to the questions:

1.  What code is required to obtain the upgrade discount - the wi-fi dongle code or the license number?
2.  Where can I find these codes?
3.  Can I get more than one discount as I manufactured and use 2 units?
4.  Do I really have to return the old kit as we use these units on a regular basis?
5.  If I do need to return the old kit, what's the turnaround time?

Any help and clarity much appreciated.

Thanks

Hugh

Neil,

Wish I had known earlier.

I keep my aircraft at Blackbushe and had my unit in the back of the car today.

As a matter of interest, I've made another 2 units for aircraft at Blackbushe - tested all in the air and all work fine.  The next test is a small formation flight to test the range in the air - of course once this rubbish weather sorts itself out!

Hi Nick,

Yep - everytime I've swapped wireless dongles over between the Pi units, I've had to re-enter the dongle unit license via the web interface.

I'm not a programmer, but I believe the dingle and pi unit need to be 'paired' (for want of a better description), via the license key.

Re the power supply issues, and I dread saying this for obvious reasons, but, I've never had a power supply issue.

In the aircraft I run the PAW from a USB power adaptor from the 24v cigarette socket or a portable battery pack.  I ensured that the output from the USB adaptor/battery pack was capable of 5v and 2A; the same requirements for charging iPads etc.

Now that I've said this - what's the odds that I start getting power issues!!!

Test my PAW unit today in my Commander 114.

Had the complete unit behind the rear parcel shelf - totally unobtrusive in the cockpit and behind the plastic bulkhead.

Everything worked perfectly using iPad mini and Skydemon.

Cross checked the USB GPS with my Garmin 430 and 2nd iPad - everything spot on.

Whenever the PAW showed traffic in my iPad mini - I looked up and there it was!

Great stuff!

General Discussion / USB Dongles fit and Overheating
« on: October 11, 2015, 05:51:39 pm »
Hi Folks,

I have 2 units up and running (one prototype and the other for a colleague), and one of build for another colleague.

I received my USB GPS dongle yesterday, and found that when plugging the WiFi, ADS-B and GPS dongles in at the same time, the 4 port USB becomes a tad tight.

I powered up my prototype and started a 2 hours soak test to see how hot the USB ports and dongles became.

After about an hour and half, my iPad mini SkyDemon lost GPS and traffic, and my WiFi dongle stopped flashing.

After removing the Wi-Fi dongle (and dropping it very quickly), it was almost too hot to touch.  After it cooled down, I tried to re-boot but no joy with the WiFi dongle; all was fine using a stand-by dongle.

It appears that I have cooked the wi-fi dongle, but I did notice also that the ADS-B dongle also got quite hot.

My current solution is to plug the ADS-B dongle into the unit, and run the wi-fi and GPS on USB extension leads; WITHOUT any loss of performance.

Just wondered if any other users has experienced similar issues and what has been done to mitigate the high temps.

Thanks in advance.

Not just a cunning plan - but a 'very' cunning plan !  Very interesting Lee.....

I raised this in an earlier post - I would definitely support a Mode C function.

Roderick,

The software has been changed.  The only thing you will see in Collision Aware is the On/Off slider.

The rest of the configuration is set via the web interface (http://192.168.1.1).

Log on with your PC or Tablet to the PilotAware network hotspot, then type in the above web address - you'll find the set-up option there.

Thanks Jeremy,

I'll probably change the order.

Can you PM me your email address please?

General Discussion / Re: Kits or ready-made device

I think this would have significant interest.

I'm building a couple for some flying buddies (at cost).  With the hardware improvements coming along nicely, the build time is quick, but the availability of parts is becoming an issue.

I think as long as the read-made devices are reasonably priced, then this would work, but as soon as folk start asking silly money, then it wont!

Jeremy,

I ordered a couple of ARF boards a few ago (awaiting re-stock), but I've noticed that I requested the MCA connectors attached and soldered; what I meant to order was the ARF board soldered and the antenna pigtail as normal (allows for more flexibility when drilling the hole for the connector).

Any chance of changing the order?

Carl,

A few suggestions/questions:

1.  WiFi range - make sure you are using known dongle and an appropriate power supply. (search the forum for hardware known to work).
2.  The On/Off switch is all you get with Collision Aware - all other system set-ups are via the GUI http://192.168.1.1
3.  You need to enter a FLARM access code of 6000 for it to connect (input access code right at the bottom of the connections options in SkyDemon)

Try these and keep us 'posted'
