Rob,

Do you have 'Ask to Join Networks' selected on your iPhone? If not you need to join manually.

Don't know why its not showing any details though - I don't have an iPhone - just looking at my iPad which may be different.

I have not come across this one before!

Edit: Just checked (by clicking the (i) symbol to the right of the unconnected networks visible on my pad) and all that information seems to be blank until you 'Join the Network'

Funny you should say that, I was just wondering the same thing. Do any of you out there have numbers for Mode A / C / and S transponders currently in use in the UK? ...or where I can find this information?

About updates.... Can we simply update our sd card in a second PAW at home then take just the SD card to the airfield and put it into the PAW installed in the aircraft. This card already has the correct key, hex, reg, in the settings? Or in other words have 2 sd cards for one main PAW, just updated in a second unit (just a Raspberry Pi *) I hope this makes sense

Morning Richard,

I noted late last night that you managed a successful update of your main unit via Ethernet. My memory is clearer this morning regarding updating the card from the PAW fitted in your aircraft by using a second unit at home as a 'surrogate'. I remembered what the issue re the License was and have just tried this using my 'spare' ADSB Only pi 2 as the surrogate and also using one of my old Pi B+ units to confirm.

As Lee says, you can take the micro SD card out of the PAW 'fitted' in your aircraft home, put it in your 'spare' Paw (* or another raspberry Pi, though if you want to carry out the download checks this needs to at least have a PAW WiFi dongle fitted) connect that to your router, power it up and wait 20 minutes, power down again and disconnect the Ethernet cable. If there was a software update available it will have downloaded. If you want to check, then power your 'spare' PAW/Pi back up with the 'Main Unit Card' still in it and connect to the 'Home Page' from your tablet, it shows:

   Pilotaware Software Version (Date Code) License Expired()

...because the license code on the micro SD card in it is for your Main Unit! and therefore carries the Main Unit Licence details which don't match your current unit's MAC address!

At this point, if you click on (Updates) - you will see the new version listed next to the (Install) button, but remember you are not trying to update the 'Surrogate', so DO NOT CLICK (INSTALL). If you did it wouldn't run but might corrupt the information on the card. Simply power down and remove the micro SD card.

When you return to the airfield, place this card in your 'Main' unit, power up, connect with your tablet, go to (Updates) and click (Install). Time for a cup of coffee and when you come back your Main Unit will be running on the new version.

As you say, if you have 2 cards both initially set up for the 'Main Unit' with the correct Licence details, Hex Address etc, this method will allow you to 'download' updates remotely at will and transfer them to your Main Unit when you next visit your aircraft.

I have just tried to up date as described in the new manual. Is there a problem? Ok  connected to PAW via 192.168.1.1 no problem.... Powered down connected direct to router... Power up.... Then can not connect via 192.168.1.1. It just hanging with out connecting. Running version 20160511 which should be ok.  We have had this problem befor on the earlier version. Has anyone had the same problem or is it me? I have updated this way befor.

Please follow my earlier post (Reply 1) but Don't connect your tablet to your PAW until after you have connected it to your router, powered it up, left it for 20 minutes, powered it back down and disconnected it from your router. Then re-start it, connect to 192.168.1.1 from your tablet, select (Update) from the Screen Headers and check the updates page. If an update has downloaded correctly it will be there waiting to 'Install'.

As Ian rightly says, transmitting aerials in particular should be as widely spaced as practicable to prevent distortion of signal pattern and minimise the potential for induced radio frequency (rf) interference in the other system. Better to consider one of the new vertical dipoles for your PAW P3i transmit/receive. With a wood and fabric aircraft this can be easily fitted inside your bodywork and clear of radio 'obstructions' - namely you and the engine.

Hi Ian,

Know what you mean, but anyone directly above or below would have to get there first, presumably from further out and should already have been detected.

The great benefit of a vertical dipole is its maximum radiation (or reception) is effectively horizontal, which is where our greatest threat is likely to be and it doesn't need a ground plane.

Hi Chris,

Lee seems to be offline at present so here goes.

This is the best way to carry out an auto-update. edited to incorporate Lee's later comments

  • First check that your current software is at least version 20160511 (earlier versions won't auto-update)

    Turn off your Pilotaware

    Connect it to your home or other router with an Ethernet cable.

    Power up the PAW and leave it running - any new update should automatically download, but to be sure, leave your PAW connected to your router for at least 20 minutes. Depending on your router subnet, you may not be able to connect to your PAW during this stage.

    Power down and disconnect the Ethernet Cable

    Power your PAW back up again.

    Connect to PAW from your usual tablet or whatever and go to the Home Page (or any other main page).

    Click the (Updates) button from the top of any page - if there is a new update it will be listed.

    Click the Install button and wait while PAW installs the update. This may take some time.

    Check the Home Page, which should now show the new update as PilotAware Version (New Date) e.g. (20160530).

    You are now running the new update.

The main benefit of the Auto-updating system is that, unlike the 'old' method, you no longer need to reformat the microSD card each time and your licence details are retained, so you don't have to re-enter them after every update (both of which were a pain). Downside? The only one I have found is that I have to take the PAW out of the plane (it's semi-permanently fitted) or buy a big long ethernet cable  :-\

I forgot to say that I also removed the magnet from the bottom of the ADSB aerial or it will do nasty things to the magnetic compass.

Do check before you fly that noting in your fit affects the compass it is an easy mistake to make!

This point has been made several times on the forum and you are right to remind us yet again.

If fitting any new electronic equipment - (any of which might generate a magnetic field when powered up), or anything known to containing magnets - anywhere near your compass, it is essential to check your compass direction before and after fitting and with the new equipment powered up to make sure that it has not affected your compass bearing.

I found this out the hard way several years ago, when I powered up my shiny new (at the time) GPS in the air only to see my compass veer by over 20 degrees from its previous direction. OK it was a GPS, so kind of made the compass redundant (at least until it failed), but the principle still stands. The answer in my case was to move the compass up onto my front strut well away from all my electrics, but this is of course not always possible.
