General Discussion / Re: Pilotaware & GPS problems?

Thank you Peter and Lee - understood now. Suppose I should 'RTFM' better.

Lee, one question - those Track Log files seem pretty large - do they self- delete eventually?

Thanks Tony

Correct ! Wonder how you know that ?

Must admit I was unaware that PAW shows Mode S contacts - presumably without showing position.

Hello Lee

Yes Mode S enabled - no special settings that I am aware of, just aircraft reg and hex code.

The unit is at the aircraft , I'll get the file next visit.

Many thanks Tony

Tested in flight  today using RunwayHd. It worked well with no intermittent loss of 'Flarm Data' warning. However after takeoff the iPad GPS position was inaccurate while using the PilotAware GPS. It slowly started to show the correct track but with a serious 'map shift' position error. I switched to the iPad GPS and the position was immediately corrected and all well for the remaining 30 mins of flight. On the return flight I again used the PilotAware GPS, this time no problems.

Occasionally there is a contact showing at my position usually about 200ft above. I have entered my hex address and also my Trig Tx does not transmit GPS position so I assume it is somehow picking up my PilotAware transmitted position ??

Mine up and running in 10 mins too ! Many thanks.

Just a word for others - be careful when  unpacking. In my excitement I didn't notice the wifi dongle loose in the box, nearly threw it away..

Tried RunwayHD in the cockpit again using a better power source - the pi red light now on throughout. All working well at home.

When trying in the cockpit though I still get the ADS-B returns cycling on/off regularly about every 2 seconds, usually with the message 'loss of Flarm data'. This occurs  even on the ground with all aircraft supply switched off.
During the 30 minute flight there was no loss of GPS position on RunwayHD.

I did notice after taking it all out of the aircraft - still running - that there seemed to be a loss of wfi on the iPad for a second or so.. Perhaps this could just have been a poor connection somewhere.(?) and the cause of the data loss.
Anyway in case I have a faulty 801.11n dongle, I have ordered another. Strange though because it all worked normally in the car driving for about 30 mins with very good ADS-B reception and GPS position.

HI

<I think> I noticed a similar occurrence of false GPS position with RunwayHD when using PAW.  Only a brief trial flight  and I was solo so not too much time to investigate.

Also I have posted about ADS-B traffic flicking continuously off then on. Perhaps the wifi is interfering with the iPad/Runway HD in some way ?

Early days and I need to do some more flight testing.

General Discussion / ADS -B prob

Thanks for the advice regarding my ADS-B returns cycling on/off. Yes I am using the same power supply in and out of the cockpit.

I have ordered your recommended power supply.

Will advise results ..

Regards Tony (couldn't see where to start new topic - sorry !)

General Discussion / ADS-B returns unstable in cockpit
« on: November 22, 2015, 03:06:15 pm »
I have ADS-B returns working well from ground - either in my house or outside no matter where. However when I try in my cockpit the ADS-B targets flick on, then off, then on again continuously. Probably about a constant 1 second cycle - on then off.  This happens even with all electrical power off in the aircraft. The same happens in flight. Then taken out of the cockpit it works normally even in the corner of the hangar.
My cockpit is a large Perspex one and the aircraft wood and fabric - a Jodel D140 There are metal hoops supporting the canopy which could be interfering in some way with the wifi signal (?)

I'm using RunwayHD and the recommended ADS-B receiver and wifi dongle. The red LED on the pi does flash and often goes out altogether - I understand this indicates insufficient power ( I have a 5v2 1A supply) but as I say all works well out of the cockpit and the iPad picks up the wifi signal without interruption.

Any suggestions for cause ?
Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Re: First Time Booting

Thanks Lee - I've got the code in correctly - didn't appreciate I had to obtain one from you.

The Raspberry now accepts the code but it now fails at SER-ARF. Tries to connect at 9600 baud then 57600 baud. Last message:  'Configuration Failed',
Is this because I have not got the ARF installed or do I need to do something to disable the ARF  connection attempt ?

Many thanks for the assistance Tony

Re booting problem:

Thank you Lee, my mistake should of course be http:// . I can now log in via Safari. I get to the Configure screen and have entered the code in brackets and saved. However I am still getting the 'License Fail' messages. I tried re-booting via the iPadconfigure screen but the Raspberry again stops at the License Fail message?

I'm having similar problem as keithvinning had some time ago. Boots up as far as the License Fail message. My iPad gets the wifi from Pilotaware successfully. I have typed into Safari https://192.168.1.1 to enter the code but it says 'unable to connect due no server. However on one attempt it did connect and I entered the code given in brackets next to' Pilotaware' on the screen.  But the License Fail message remained. Now it will not connect again. I'm using the stated hardware and Runway HD with Flarm On and also the Collision Aware enabled although that just remains at Connect...
Any advice please ?
Thanks Tony
